Women Of Substance<br />
<strong>Indian</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry is full of famous women. At the same time, repression of womenfolk has also been<br />
a fact of indian life for centuries. The situation has improved significantly since Independence but we<br />
still have miles <strong>to</strong> go. A grim reminder is the fact that though female foeticide has come down drastically,<br />
it has still not been fully eradicated from our country. At this moment let us remember some of our<br />
contemporaries who have excelled in different walks of life. A few women who have made us proud by<br />
great achievements in their respective fields of activity are:-<br />
Saina Nehwal: A sensation in <strong>Indian</strong> Badmin<strong>to</strong>n who won a Bronze medal in women’s singles<br />
badmin<strong>to</strong>n at the London Olympics.<br />
Mary Kom: A five time world boxing champion who won a<br />
in the 51 Kg category.<br />

Sunita Williams: An American astronaut of <strong>Indian</strong> origin who holds the record for the longest<br />
spaceflight by a woman.<br />
Kiran Bedi: The first lady IPS officer of India; presently campaigning for implementation of the Lok<br />

Arundhati Roy: Writes of the famous book “The God of Small Things” for which she won the<br />
coveted Man Booker Prize in 1997.<br />
Pratibha Patil: First woman President of India who served our country from 2007-12.<br />
Meira Kumar: Former diplomat <strong>and</strong> presently the first lady Speaker of the <strong>Indian</strong> Parliament (Lok<br />
Sabha).<br />
Medha Patkar: Torchbearer of Narmada Bachao A<strong>and</strong>olan, a civil rights activist.<br />
Aishwarya Rai: A mesmerizing Bollywood actress who made India proud by winning the Miss<br />
World title in 1994.<br />
