Mortise Locks 

The mortise locks in this catalogue have been categorized into the 

following different usage areas: 

• For pivot doors 

• For double action doors 

• For sliding doors 

• For narrow frame doors 

• For escape routes 

• For fire resistant doors 

Lock components and dimensions 

Door direction 

Depending on the pivoting direction of a door, a distinction is made 

between left hand and right hand doors. The door direction or side 

designation is determined as follows according to DIN 107: 

• Visible position of the door hinges on the left = DIN left 

• Visible position of the door hinges on the right = DIN right 

Some usable designations can also be derived from the access 

direction.

classified as DIN left hand and DIN right hand locks:

Mortise Locks 

Information 

Type of door 

The choice of mortise lock also depends on the type of the door: 

• Profile of a rebated door with mortise lock (forend protruding at 

one side) 

Grade 5 

• Lock for high user frequency and increased burglary prevention 

• Backset 55 – 100 mm 

• Lock cover secured in at least three places 

• Door weight greater than 60 kg *) 

• Frequent use 

• Type tested according to DIN 18257 with firmly fixed fittings with 

500,000 latchbolt operations and 100,000 deadbolt operations. 

*) The door weight refers to a standard door with size 2 x 1 m.

Standardization in compliance with DIN 

Mortise locks can be tested according to DIN 18251 and assigned 

to 5 lock categories: 

Grade 1 

• Lock for interior doors (interior door lock for infrequently used 

door) 

• Backset 55 mm 

• Lock cover secured in two places 

• max. door weight 40 kg *) 

• Infrequent use 

Grade 2 

• Lock for more frequently used interior doors (interior door lock) 


• Lock cover secured in at least two places 

• Door weight 40 – 50 kg *)

Additional test logos 

The special quality of a mortise lock can be certified by various 

institutes with an appropriate test seal: 

Quality symbol 

The quality assurance of mortise locks for external fire 

doors using the quality symbol is based on a test of 

suitability and ability to withstand strain according to 

DIN 18250 or DIN 4102 part 18. 

The manufacturer also voluntarily agrees to have external 

monitoring carried out at regular intervals. 

Locking type 

The mortise locks in this catalogue are categorized into the following 

locking types: 

• CB cipher bit 

• Bathroom/WC for bathroom doors 

• Prepared for profile cylinder (PC) 

Lock latch 

The lock latch has the task to keep the door panel closed. 

The material or special surface treatments (nickel plating, chrome 

plating, Teflon coating, etc.) have an influence on the glide quality of 

the latchbolt. 

Latchbolt damping 

In order to reduce locking noise, sound absorbing elements can be 

fitted in the area of the latchbolt and the lever follower. 

Modified latchbolt heads, i.e. by installing sound absorbing rollers, 

are also used for sound absorption. 

Deadbolt 

According to DIN 18251, the deadbolt in the locked (secured) 

position has the task to prevent access by unauthorized persons. 

By turning the key or lock handle once or twice, the deadbolt is 

pre-locked 1-turn or 2-turn. An increased protrusion of the deadbolt 

creates a higher safety of the lock. 

Key action 

Via the key action, the latchbolt can be operated with the key.

Mortise Locks 

Information / Classification 

Lever follower 

Many different mortise lock lever followers are available, some of 

which are special versions. The basic functionality of the versions 

shown in this catalogue can be described as follows: 

Lever follower housing

Clamping follower 

The mechanism of the clamping follower is one of the simplest and 

best lever handle fixing methods. The follower is usually divided into 

two halves, which are under opposing spring pressure to each 

other. 

The lever spindle is therefore wedged in and free from unnecessary 

movement. 

Various lever followers are also housed in special ring systems 

made from metal or plastic. The increased bearing surface of the 

follower reduces wear in both the axial and radial directions. 

The glide quality can also be improved by the choice of ring material. 

Test symbol 

According to building regulations list A from the German Institute for 

Building Technology (DIBt), quality assurance must be carried out by 

means of external monitoring. The Material Test Institute NRW 

carries out these tests and indicates that quality assurance has 

been carried out by means of the quality symbol on the forend of 

the lock.

EN 12209:2003 

The performance features are defined by this European Standard in order to ensure that the different products are comparable.

Continuous battery monitoring ensures that wireless PIN code locks 

with an independent long-term power supply will open lockers at 

any time. As soon as a low battery is indicated, the locker can still

In institutions where data media are not used for locking and 

payment, the electronic PIN code locking system frees operators 

and users from keys and the associated risks thereof.

The user merely enters a 4–10 digit code that consists of an easily 

remembered letter or number code similar to a mobile phone PIN, 

and locks the locker via the rotary handle. To unlock, simply enter 

the selected code – and the locker door opens.

Club members can relax and spend time on the premises without 

having to carry a key around.

SAFE-O-PIN® dispenses with costly administration of locker keys

Combined coin return/coin retain lock 

The combined coin return/coin retain lock allows one of the inserted 

coins to be returned as a deposit after the use of the locker and the 

second coin to be retained as payment. The user can open the 

locker at any time free of charge during use. The deposit coin is 

returned whenever the locker is opened. 

The fine function prevents non-permissible time 

limit overruns and locker reservations. 

With locker systems that are frequently used by the same group of 

people (e.g. in schools or universities), users may block lockers 

unnecessarily by inserting deposit coins, removing the key and this 

way reserve “their” locker beyond the stipulated locker system 

opening times. 

This is where the SAFE-O-MAT® fine key comes in. This key allows 

a blocked locker to be opened, the deposited coin to be removed 

as a fine and the locker re-locked without the deposit. When the 

user opens the locker again the key is trapped immediately in the 

usual way, but the deposit is not returned. This makes locker reservations 

expensive – and therefore unattractive. 

Promax function: Protection against concealed 

theft and liability risks 

Conventional systems have an overriding master key that can open 

all locker locks. A service key is usually also required so that the 

cylinder can be changed if keys have been lost. 

However, concealed theft is still possible with any of these keys. 

Even personnel can be wrongly suspected if the user falsely reports 

a theft. 

SAFE-O-MAT® solves these problems by using the overriding 

Promax master key. Personnel can open any locker with this key in 

the event of an emergency and help the guest immediately. 

The patented Promax function allows any master key use to be 

monitored. 

This has advantages for everybody involved: 

• The user is protected against concealed theft since the locker 

cannot be secretly opened and locked again without detection. 

• Proof to the contrary can be provided if false accusations are 

made against personnel. 

• Continuous monitoring reduces the operator’s liability risk 

considerably.

Locking cylinders are categorized according to:

Various safety mechanisms integrated in the locking cylinder 

guarantee the maximum safety of a locking cylinder. 

Apart from a high number of pin tumblers, which reduce the risk of 

unauthorized unlocking, the following functions in particular prevent 

a forced opening:

• Pull protection 

In order to prevent unintentional obstruction of the locking 

function by a key that is inserted in one side, double cylinders can 

be equipped with a hazard function (priority function): In this case, 

the cylinder can also be locked from the opposite side. 

Such mechanical reinforcements can be ordered as special features 

via the surcharge list if these are not already standard features of 

the cylinder. 

Surcharge lists for locking cylinders of the individual manufacturer 

are listed at the end of the respective group; cylinders with special 

lengths, special colors and special features are available. 

Unauthorized ordering of replacement cylinders and keys is 

prevented by a security pass which contains the definition and 

coding of the locking system and the locking cylinder and must 

be provided as an authority pass when ordering replacements or 

additions.

The definition of important components and characteristics of 

locking cylinders in this catalog follows generally the terminology 

according to EN 1303 with DIN 18252/09-1999. 

Security pass 

General requirements on locking cylinders are defined in the 

EN 1303 and DIN 18252/09-1999 standards. These standards 

categorize locking cylinders into three grades which define the 

following characteristics: 

• Minimum number of pin tumblers: 

Grade 1 and 2: 5 pin tumblers, 

grade 3: 6 pin tumblers 

• Minimum numbers of different key changes: 

Grade 1 and 2: 30000 key changes, 

grade 3: 100000 key changes. 



The following factors have to be considered when determining the 

length C of the locking cylinder:

• Position of the lock in the door

Master key system

Where two or more individual cylinders are not only locked by an 

individual key, but also by superior keys, a so-called master key 

system is created. The application of master key systems reaches 

i.e. from apartment blocks to office complexes. Häfele supplies 

master key systems in all sizes for any type of cylinder on request, 

with patented key profiles as well as many special features. 

Many customers asked for master key systems made in Germany 

but criticize the long delivery times which you have with made goods 

from Germany. For this reason Häfele Asia developed their own 

master key system production. 

Our master key systems SD and PSM are completely produced in 

Germany and only the last steps such as key cutting 

locally. With this service Häfele Asia is able to offer their 

customers German-quality master key systems within a short delivery 

time. 

However, the Häfele service not only comprises the delivery. Häfele 

has experts for hardware technology, master key systems and for 

any questions relating to individual cylinders. The service 

reaches from initial assistance in the planning phase to the 

creation of appropriate master key plans. 

Differences are made between the following master key

Electric Strikes 

Information 

2 

Electric strikes allow a secure locking and controlled release of all 

types of doors. The latchbolt of the door lock is held by the latch of 

the electric strike. This way, the electric strike keeps the door 

closed. 

A pre-requisite is that the latch of the electric strike cannot be 

retracted from the outside of the door. 

Therefore, doors with electric strikes have a fixed handle or a knob 

on the outside. When the electric strike is supplied with power 

(contact made), the latch of the electric strike, and therefore the 

door, is released. Contact can be made for a short or long period. 

It can also be controlled by electronic locking systems and be 

connected to access control devices or set to open at certain 

times. 

Interlocking function 

Electric strikes with interlocking function remain unlocked until the 

door is opened by an interlocking pin in the electric strike latch 

after contact is made for a short period. The door can be opened 

only one time. When closing the door, the electric strike locks the 

door again. 

The interlocking function only works reliably if the interlocking pin is 

completely pushed in by the latchbolt whilst the door is closed 

(distance between electric strike and lock normally approx. 

2 – 3 mm). 

If the distance between the electric strike and the lock is too great, 

the interlocking pin is not pushed in completely. In this case, the 

electric strike operates without interlocking function. 

Operation with alternating current and direct 

current 

Alternating current operation 

• When contact is established to unlock, the typical humming 

sound can be heard, which is often required as a signal. 

• Doors with counter pressure on the latch of the electric strike 

(up to 150 N) are also reliably unlocked. 

• Permanent operation is not possible. 

Direct current operation 

• The process of unlocking is carried out without a humming 

sound. 

• There must be no counter pressure on the latch of the electric 

strike. 

When selecting between operation with alternating current and 

direct current, the specifications of the electric strike must be 

considered. Not all electric strikes can be operated with alternating 

current. The relevant information can be found on the product 

pages. 

Correct distance: Interlocking function works 

Operating current function 

The door can only be opened whilst contact is made with electric 

strikes that work with operating current function. 

Distance too great: Interlocking function does not work

Mechanical release 

Electric strikes with mechanical release can be switched off using a 

small lever in the lock latch. 

The electric strike function is therefore disabled. This allows free 

access and unrestricted use of the door, e.g. in public buildings 

during visiting hours. 

Electric strikes for access control systems 

It is recommended to use electric strikes with a regenerative diode,

control systems. This eliminates possible damages to the 

electronics of the access control system. This applies to the 

Dialock electronic locking system and other access control systems. 

Electric strikes with regenerative diode may only be used 

with direct current function in accordance with the nominal voltage. 

Observe correct polarity. 

Permanent operation 

Electric strikes with permanent operation function (rated for 

continuous duty 100%) can be unlocked via a special switch or 

timer using continuous direct current. The electric strike function is 

therefore disabled and the latch is movable. The door can now be 

opened as often as required. 

Door closers may be installed to prevent gusts of wind or draught 

to push the door open. A momentary contact (e.g. unlocking by 

door release switch) with alternating current is possible. Electric 

strikes without permanent operation are only prepared for 

momentary contact function.

cut-out of the latch instead of the electric strike. It replaces the

of the latch and is later exchanged by the electric strike.

components can also be used as adjustable striking plate 

– in 

combination with a suitable striking plate – due to the adjustment 

facility. It is not necessary to retrofit an electric strike. 

 

Accessories for electric strikes 

 

Current transmitter, cable transition and electromechanical contact 

 

transmit the current from the door frame to the door panel. This 

 

current transmission is required for installation of electric strikes in

electric strikes, e.g. for switching off the power supply for the electric
