3 - position for hilly routes:
1st, 2nd and 3rd gears are changed up and
down depending on the engine load and the
driving speed.
Kick-down
A kick-down switch is fitted under the
accelerator pedal. When fast acceleration
is required, the accelerator pedal should be
pushed down to its full extent. Depending
upon the road speed, this will cause the
gearbox to change down automatically to a
lower forward speed.
Changing up to the next gear will only occur
once the maximum engine speed allowed
has been reached.
Starting
The engine can only be started when
position N is engaged.
Operate the parking brake before starting.
ZF Automatic gearbox:
At temperatures below - 15°C start the
engine and run the engine warm in position
N for about 10 minutes at 1000 rpm before
driving away.
Driving away from rest
With the vehicle stationary, the brakes
applied and the engine idling, select the
desired position (D = forward speed, or R =
reverse), then wait for 1-2 seconds, release
the brakes, depress the accelerator pedal
and drive away.
Do not accelerate whilst switching on and
stationary.
Note
To prevent the bus from rolling backwards
whilst on a slope, the accelerator should be
depressed before the brake pedal/parking
brake is released.
Special note!
If the vehicle does not drive away or the
wrong option is selected:
- Remove the foot from the accelerator;
- Press the “N” key and then the desired
option key.
Should you unintentionally engage position
N whilst the vehicle is in motion, you must
again select position D in order to prevent
damage to the drive line. The electronically
controlled gear selector unit will then
automatically select the forward speed that
matches the road speed.
Stopping
The vehicle can always be brought to a stop
regardless of the chosen gear.
The electronic automatic gear always changes
to 1st gear after stopping (depending
on any fitted options such as Neutral at
Stationary (NBS, EK-ab) etc.). Whilst stopping
for a short period of time, for example
at a traffic light, the gearbox can remain in
option “D” or in the chosen gear. The engine
may then only idle.
Driving in reverse
Change from “D” to “R” or vice versa:
- Bring the vehicle to a stop and keep the
brake pedal depressed;
- Idle the engine;
- Push in the neutral switch “N”.
If the vehicle is equipped with a switch
(39), then this switch should also be
operated.
- Select the required option.
