27 Your Letters Retirement of Life Member I am writing to notify you that after a lengthy period of poor health away from my police duties I am retiring from the Victoria Police Force on the 15 th July, 2009, after 31 years service. I will therefore also be resigning as a full time member of The Police Association but will be seeking outside membership. ESSSuper is supporting me with a full time Disability Pension, and I would like to take this opportunity in thanking that organisation’s fantastic staff and its supporting team of Medical Advisors. I would also like to thank members from the Crime Department’s Peer Support Group, in particular Sue Thwaites, for the telephone calls and cards of support. Wishing you and The Police Association all the best with future endeavours in seeking the best for your membership. I have had 40 years of policing and enjoyed every minute of it. I have had the opportunity to work with some terrific people and to have shared some great experiences. While I have never had to use the resources of the Association it was always a comfort to have that resource available should that occasion have arisen. I hope that the Association and the Victoria Police can build a quality relationship into the future. This would truly be in the interests of the community and members. I view this award as a great honour, albeit I see some irony for receiving this award for doing something I love! Much of the work of Victoria Police Soccer Club would be impossible without the ongoing support of The Police Association and we appreciate your interest. Thank you again for the message. Yours sincerely Jennifer O’Donnell-Pirisi Victorian Trades Hall Council Women’s Officers Ill-Health Retirement As I am Ill Health Retiring as of Sat 4 th July 2009, it is with regret that I must forward my resignation from the Victoria Police Association. I have had occasion to use the Association in the past & the present. Even as this letter is being composed, that skilled negotiator, Les Beslis continues to negotiate on my behalf. I believe that Victoria Police has lost direction in the past few years. Our past Chief Commissioner may be proud that she got rid of the so called brotherhood, but what really seems to have gone is the loyalty and the looking after one another that was so strong when I joined nearly 31 years ago. Among many other instances, this is evident by the fact that while on sick leave, I was demoted from LSC to S/C because I wasn’t OSTT qualified for a job I hadn’t done for three and a half years. I am not alone in having this inflicted on them. I know the Association is fighting to correct these and other injustices, and I believe the Association will prevail. Under this present regime, while members like myself are labelled bludgers while other members attempt to complete their paperwork on leave and days off, the Association & it’s members need to be stronger than ever. I believe that our Association will find itself busier than ever as our members are expected to do more with less as Victoria Police circles the bowl. I am just glad that there are people like Les Beslis fighting for our rights, not just because they can, but because they believe. Keep fighting the good fight. A formal presentation will take place on 18 June 2009 during the PFA Executive meeting in Perth. The President undertook to provide feedback to the July Executive meeting.
