The 30th Victorian Police & Emergency
Services Games were a huge success
this year with 2,400 participants − 400
more than last year! Every competitor
received a special 30th anniversary badge
to commemorate their participation in this
special celebration of camaraderie and
sportsmanship.
Netball was still the most popular sport with
lawn bowls coming a very close second. This
year the bowls events had to be played on
two greens. And growing in popularity is
surfing. You don’t have to be an elite athlete
to compete in these games − you just have
to want to be a part of it.
This year a special charity partnership
was established with the Amy Gillett
Foundation. The Foundation provided two
framed cycling jerseys for two cyclists who
displayed perseverance and leadership
during their event. Brad Daly from VicPol
and Iain McLaren from the Department of
Primary Industries were awarded these
collectables signed by Phil Anderson and
Steve Moneghetti.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the
games. Let the training begin for next year!
Helping our wildlife
Since his retirement last year after almost
44 years in the job Frank Harris has
his hands full helping wife Sue at their
animal shelter.
It all began six years ago when Frank was
called to reports of a ‘big wild bird’ in the
backyard of a Reservoir home. "It turned
out to be a tawny frog mouth and it just
developed there," says Frank.
Today Sue is the official shelter holder
and frank is "just the worker". They take
in injured animals from vets, the public
and off the side of the road.
"We care for all types of wildlife, with the
exception of snakes and bats. We did
have a micro bat in care recently. It was
a gorgeous little thing with the biggest set
of teeth you can imagine."
