Building a sustainable future For the first time, this year’s annual report has taken a new direction by incorporating a snapshot of our sustainability initiatives and goals for long-term success. A challenge for any business is to balance financial performance, environmental protection and social responsibility. The table below demonstrates that everything we do enhances all three dimensions of sustainable development. For Country Energy, sustainability goes far beyond financial returns and statistics. Priorities in 2004-2005 Country Energy remained focussed on our goal of becoming Australia’s leading utility business. A performance reporting system – known as our ‘corporate dashboard’ – provides the structure and processes for assessing our achievements against our ambitions. The Strategy Statement below summarises our direction and establishes measures and targets that create a clear, common purpose. Translated into a logical set of performance measures in our dashboard, it represents our blueprint for the future. Key focus areas in 2004-2005 included safety, financial performance, customer satisfaction, business effectiveness and organisational health measures. The challenge for 2005-2006 Corporate initiatives to drive further progress in the year ahead include continuing our safety and customer satisfaction programs, realising productivity improvements, undertaking a workforce planning study and focussing our efforts on network reliability. 3 COUNTRY ENERGY ANNUAL REPORT 2004–2005
