Peters, Simpson Inducted into Hall of Fame
2010 Hall of Fame honorees Virgil Peters, Lisbon (left) and Mike Simpson, Redfield (right) are shown with
IHBA President Charley Johnson at the annual meeting in Clarinda on Aug. 28.
This year, the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association chose to honor two men whose
leadership helped shape the organization. In 1998-99, a joint committee of the Iowa Hereford
Association and Iowa Polled Hereford Association met numerous times to discuss joining to
form one state association for horned and polled Hereford breeders in Iowa. As presidents of
their respective associations, Virgil Peters, Lisbon, and Mike Simpson, Redfield, co-chaired the
merger committee. The board of directors felt it appropriate to induct them into the Iowa
Hereford Hall of Fame together. Their biographies follow:
Virgil Peters
Virgil Peters was born in Nebraska, where his love of Herefords began with a
grandfather and father who raised registered Herefords. He and his family migrated to Iowa
when he was 10 years old, being enticed by how green it was. After graduating from Central
City High School, Virgil spent two years in the Army serving in Korea. He attended Iowa State
for 2 years and then started selling for John Deere. He invested in Power Equipment in Cedar
Rapids and managed that store for 20 years. The next 20 years he was a real estate agent and
appraiser for Hertz Farm Management in Mt. Vernon.
In 1997 he and his wife, Sharon, who worked for Cornell College and is also a music
teacher, purchased a farm in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, on Highway 30 near the Palisades Kepler State
Park and it was there that he maintained and greatly enjoyed his herd of 35 Herefords of
predominantly D-4 breeding. Sharon says of the cattle: “they were all pets”.
For several years, Virg and Sharon hosted a community Christmas Eve service in their
barn. He enjoyed participating in the Iowa Hereford Association, serving on the board for many
years, and working with Mike Simpson to establish the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association.
Virgil and Sharon have three children and five grandchildren. Recently, they sold their farm and
retired in Lisbon.
Mike Simpson
Although he has lived in Iowa since 1979, Mike Simpson’s affiliation with the state’s
Hereford associations dates back to 1972. As vice president in charge of youth activities for the
American Polled Hereford Association, he oversaw the formation that year of the Iowa Junior
Polled Hereford Association.
A “city boy” who grew up in Dayton, Ohio, Mike began raising and showing Polled
Herefords during his high school years. He worked at several Polled Hereford herds during the
summers, most notably Myrtlewood Farms in Kentucky. After graduating from Ohio State
University, he did graduate work at Penn State University, where he managed data collection on
a 225-cow herd as part of a cow size and performance study. Collecting data for a genetic
study of the inheritance of the polled/horned/scur trait took him to Polled Hereford herds in
Kansas, Tennessee, West Virginia and Ohio as well as Pennsylvania.
Mike’s first position after college was at the American Polled Hereford Association,
where he implemented the APHA’s national youth program and helped form numerous state
junior associations, oversaw the National queen contest, worked with the National Organization
of Poll-ettes – and met his wife, Becky! His most notable achievement was originating and
developing the National Junior Polled Hereford Heifer Show & Forum, the predecessor to and
prototype for the current Junior National Hereford Expo.
In 1979, Mike followed his boss and mentor, Orville Sweet, to the National Pork
Producers Council and the Simpsons moved to rural Redfield, IA, bringing with them the cow
herd that was established in 1974. Simpson Polled Herefords currently consists of 20-25 cows,
with an emphasis on performance. Mike worked in the pork industry for nearly 24 years; he
now has a consulting business managing an association involved with veterinary and animal
husbandry scientists concerning animal welfare.
Mike has served in many capacities in the state Hereford associations. He was on the
steering committee for the 1996 Junior National in Des Moines and was a director and president
of the Iowa Polled Hereford Association. In 1998 and 1999, he and Virgil Peters, as president of
their respective associations, co-chaired the merger committee that formed the Iowa Hereford
Breeders Association in 1999. This fall is the sixth time he has been “ad salesman/marketing
manager” of the IHBA membership directory and he and Becky have managed the Iowa Select
Hereford Sale at the Beef Expo since 2008. Mike has been announcer for the Iowa Junior
Preview Show for several years and also assists in the ring at the State Fair. He is also the
unofficial photographer for most Iowa Hereford events.
The Simpsons are the parents of two grown sons – Travis (married to Sara), who lives in
Des Moines; and Kevin, who lives in Thermopolis, Wyoming. Both boys were active in the junior
program on state and national levels, exhibiting at eight junior nationals. The Junior National is
still a favorite activity for Mike – he often encourages young people and their families to
participate and he and Becky usually make the JNHE their vacation destination each year.

Hereford Steer Excels
in Carcass Contest
Looking for a CHB Meal?
Hall of Famer Jim Kuhlman writes: “On
our way to the Iowa Hereford Tour, we stopped
in Anita at the Weather Vane Café and met Bart
Peppers, the owner of the Feedlot Steak House
at 1904 E. 7 th in Atlantic, IA. I mentioned the
words ‘Hereford tour’ and he told us that he is
serving Certified Hereford Beef at his steak
house and is very happy with the beef.
“Next time you are in the area, stop in
to support the Hereford breed and enjoy a good
Hereford dinner with Bart & Beth Peppers and
let them know you are a Hereford breeder and
especially like what they are providing to the
public. By the way, he will ship Certified
Hereford Beef anywhere.”
Gammon Barn Displays Updated
Jackie Wenzel of Latimer brought a
homebred registered Hereford steer to the State
Fair’s Beef of Merit competition and ended up
placing 13 th out of 58 head on carcass. In the
process, her calf posted the best cost of gain in
the contest.
Here are the impressive statistics: live
weight, 1,275 lb.; hot carcass weight, 789 lb.;
dress percentage, 61.9; ribeye area 15.5
inches; fat 0.45 inch; USDA grade Prime; yield
grade 2.06; percent retail product, 67.3; $/cwt
hot carcass weight $163; carcass value days on
feed $2.853.
Congratulations to the Wenzel family for
demonstrating that Hereford breeders can and
do produce good carcasses with outstanding
meat quality.
Schmitt Named
Champion Beef Member
Peyton Schmitt of Nichols was selected
as the winner of this year’s Champion Beef
Member (aka “Win a Heifer”) award at the State
Fair. She will receive a minimum of $500
towards the purchase of a purebred female
from any IHBA member. Runners-up were Colin
Johnson, Iowa Falls, and Blake Solsma, Sanborn.
Thanks to the carpentry skills of Steve
Landt, the cast metal plate that designated the
Gammon Barn, Birthplace of Polled Herefords,
as a National Historic Site, is now firmly
mounted to the wall of the Gammon Barn
Museum. Several volunteers turned out on a
very hot Sunday prior to the State Fair to “spiff
up” the exhibit in preparation for the fair; and
many more gave of their time to host over
1,000 visitors during the fair’s 11-day run.
Special thanks to Rande and Grant
Seuferer and Bryce Godbersen for their tireless
efforts to keep the museum up and running.
The IHBA is in the process of prioritizing
needs and costs to upgrade the exhibit and
hopes to launch an information and broadbased
fund-raising campaign in the near future.
Hereford Youth Go Out West for
2010 PRIDE Convention
Leadership development, Hereford cattle
and fun highlighted the 2010 Program for
Reaching Individuals Determined to Excel
(PRIDE) Convention Aug. 2-4 in Boise, ID. More
than 110 individuals from 23 states
participated in the event, hosted by the
National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA).
Max Cherry of Winthrop (left) and Emma
Offenburger, Lacona (right), comprised the Iowa
delegation. (With them is Jamie Hanson of
Minnesota.) Their reflections on the experience
follow.
Max Cherry:
As I look back on the experience I had
from the National Hereford PRIDE Convention in
Boise, Idaho, this year, I would have to say with
100% confidence that it was a great
opportunity. Not only was it a great learning
experience, but it was a very fun social event as
well. Whether we were being mentally tested by
the many well-planned workshops or physically
tested by the raging waters of Idaho, there was
hardly any time to be bored. On top of those
activities we toured a few very impressive cattle
operations.
The convention started out when our
flight arrived in Boise mid-afternoon on Aug. 2.
After meeting up with a few long-lost friends,
we went to our “opening” ceremony and
listened to a few inspiring speakers as well as
participated in some fun workshops. Then we
moved on to dinner and some fun-lovers
decided to hop in the pool. After all the
“hello’s” were said it was off to bed to get ready
for an early morning the next day. The next
morning we woke up for an early morning
breakfast, then we had a workshop about the
“Masters of Beef Advocacy Program”, which all
who attended PRIDE were enrolled in. Directly
after that workshop I went to a private
workshop for state junior board presidents
only. We did an activity that simulated how to
organize, budget and plan preview shows and
junior Hereford events. Then we grabbed a sack
lunch and it was off to do some white water
rafting! Although the water was cold and our
clothes were soaked, we had a great time.
After we got dried off and back on the
bus, it was on to tour some ranches. We drove
cross country an hour or two and arrived at the
Shaw family’s operation. We had a great meal of
Certified Hereford Beef and then were off to
look at a great herd of cow/calf pairs. Then it
was back to the buses and headed back to
Boise. The next day was a whole lot of driving.
We got up very early, ate breakfast and then
hopped on the bus. Our first stop was the
Boise State football stadium to see the “smurf
turf”. Next we were on to Split Butte Cattle
Ranch; out of all the ranches we visited this was
definitely the most barren. Split Butte had
52,000 acres of government land and on that
they only had a few hundred cows. The reason
behind this is it is all desert and in order to
maintain their cattle herd they have to irrigate
every bit of potential grass they have. At Split
Butte we had lunch and viewed some of their
online sale cattle.
After Split Butte we made the trip to the
impressive facilities of Heritage Farms. Sporting
a brand-new show barn, Heritage easily had the
best facilities out of the group. However we did
not stay long. Next we made the long trip to
the Colyer Ranch. On the way we visited the
Snake River Canyon where Evel Knievel made
his jump and the Sand Dunes, which were the
biggest sand dunes in North America. At
Colyer’s we viewed a set of very impressive
cattle as well as had a great meal. As a whole it
was the most impressive stop we made. To end
the night we had a junior dance right at the
Colyers’ home. It was a great way to end the
night, as well as our trip.
Making the trip to Idaho was a great
experience for me and my fellow juniors. It was
a very good learning experience as well as a
great time to have fun and catch up with
friends from around the country. I would
recommend this convention to any Hereford
junior that wants to excel themselves deeper
into the Hereford breed.
Emma Offenburger:
Monday, Aug. 2, I flew to Boise, Idaho,
for PRIDE. Once I got there I checked into our
hotel and got our room assignments. Then we
checked into PRIDE where we received our
name tags, shirts and goody bags. That evening
we had a keynote speaker, Celeste Settrini,
from California, who was on the national board
of directors when she was a junior Hereford
member. She spoke to us about how we should
always be ourselves and not always think we
need to be like everyone else to fit in. We are all
different individuals and we need to be our true
self and not someone we are not. Then we did a
few mixer games to get to know others. That
evening we had a pizza/pool party.
On Tuesday we had breakfast then had
a larger group workshop where a few of the
national board of directors talked to us about
Hereford Leaders in Beef Advocacy workshop
and how we should all have our “snid bit” which
is our story. We are to complete the Masters of
Beef Advocacy online course. After that we
broke up into smaller groups where we rotated
through different workshops:
1) Leadership and team building, where
I learned that to make a meeting or an
organization run smoothly everyone has to do
their part and know how to work together.
2) We were given the list of Hereford
events and had to put them in correct order
without talking. With this workshop I learned
about other shows that go on throughout the
year that I didn’t know about.
3) We were given different rule
situations for the association and had to tell
our opinion on whether it was positive or
negative. With this workshop I learned some of
the rules that the association has for different
situations.
4) We also were given different
situations to learn how to sell someone and to
negotiate.
That afternoon we went to see the blue
and orange field of the Broncos’ stadium. Then
we went whitewater rafting, which was a blast.
Later that evening we went to Shaw Cattle
Company, Caldwell, Idaho. Here we saw their
cattle and had a delicious home-cooked meal.
Wednesday, we went to Split Butte
Livestock, Rupert, Idaho, where we saw their
operation and learned that the way cattle live
there is way different than in Iowa. In Idaho
livestock have to run on a lot more pasture
because the land is dryer and cattle may have
to walk 3 or 4 miles to get to water. We also
toured Heritage Cattle Company, Buhl, Idaho,
and saw their different pastures of cattle. We
saw some historical/tourist points such as the
trout farm and went through Bruneau Dunes
State Park where there are the biggest sand
dunes in the United States. Some of us chose to
climb one of them. It was beautiful to see
everything from so high up We then went to
Colyer’s Herefords, Bruneau, Idaho. Here we
had a delicious tri-tip supper and learned about
the history of tri-tips. We had end of PRIDE
wrap-up, where we were able to tell what our
favorite part had been or what we had learned.
The night continued with a dance at Colyers’.
They also gave every PRIDE participant a
Colyer’s jacket. Early Thursday morning I flew
back to Iowa.
This was a great learning experience
where we learned about all these different
Hereford ranches, how their cattle live
compared to ours, how many head they have
and other little things about their operations. I
met many new friends, saw very beautiful land,
enjoyed meeting all the different families and
seeing their ranches. I also felt like I learned a
lot during the workshops. I am very glad I got
the opportunity to go to PRIDE this year.
Still Time to Report
County Champions
October 1 is the deadline for county
Extension offices to report juniors who
exhibited a Hereford champion in 2010. To
date, the following counties have notified the
IHBA administrative secretary that they had a
champion Hereford heifer and/or steer:
Buchanan, Des Moines, Fayette, Hardin, Iowa,
Jackson, Johnson, Jones, Lucas, Marion,
Marshall, O’Brien, Plymouth, Poweshiek,
Ringgold, Tama, Wapello, Warren and
Washington. If you are a junior who exhibited a
champion at your county fair and your county is
not listed, please ask your Extension office to
submit the “Champion Hereford Report” by Oct.
1. Plaques will be given at county 4-H awards
programs.
Keep Snapping!
You can still submit color photos to be
considered for the cover of our new
membership directory. Send electronically to
becksimp@aol.com or mail to 13359 280 th St.,
Redfield, IA 50233-6014 by Nov. 1.
Small Crowd Enjoys Diversity of Tour Stops
The IHBA’s annual tour on Aug. 28 may have been somewhat short on attendees, but it was
long on interest and quality. Those who made the effort to travel to southwest Iowa were treated to
beautiful weather and a diverse selection of stops, from a large custom feedlot to established and
developing Hereford herds to a feed efficiency testing facility.
IHBA Director David Trowbridge (left), who has
managed the Gregory Feedlot near Tabor for more
than 30 years, showed attendees the various
components of feed used in the custom feedlot
before conducting a walking tour of the facility.
New members Dennis & Mary Clark, Bedford,
displayed the small but high-quality herd of horned
Herefords they are developing at TA Farms, along
with horses and a hay business.
Ron Beaver (right) used a tractor and rack wagon to
transport guests on a picturesque pasture tour of his
performance-based cow herd at rural Clarinda.
Becky Hays (with microphone) explained the special
data-gathering feed bunks used to measure feed
efficiency of animals at their Hays Beef Development
Center near Diagonal. Her husband, Craig, also
demonstrated the use of ultrasound for pregnancy
testing and carcass measurements.
Five lucky winners went home with door prizes
sponsored by the IHBA and those who stayed to
the last stop were treated to a delicious meal
featuring steak sandwiches, compliments of
Beef Resources Partnership, Hays Beef
Development Center, Ringgold County Farm
Bureau and Ultra Insights Processing Lab, Inc.
Also on display at Hays Beef Development Center
were cow-calf pairs from Beef Resources Partnership,
Tabor & Mt. Ayr, and this group of bulls from
longtime breeder and Hall of Famer Dick Graham,
Benton.
Thank You to organizers David Trowbridge
and Ron Beaver, the tour hosts and meal
sponsors, including Ron & Cheryl Beaver, who
donated the pies for dessert at the noon lunch.
Thank You…
…to outgoing director Steve Landt for his six
years of service on the IHBA board, including
two years as president.
during this difficult time will long be
remembered. Thank you for thinking of us.
To the directors of the Iowa Hereford Breeders
Association:
Virgil and I send sincere thanks for the special
day in Clarinda. The recognition from the Iowa
Hereford Breeders Association meant a lot to
both of us. It was enjoyable seeing many
friends in the organization. Thanks again.
Virgil & Sharon Peters
I am honored to be selected by the board of
directors to the Iowa Hereford Hall of Fame.
The recognition brought back pleasant
memories of working with such a great
gentleman as Virgil. Also, others who worked
on the transition/merger committee were
thoughtful about the future of our breed and
organization here in Iowa. I am confident the
IHBA is stronger today combined and working
as one. We all have new friendships that have
developed. Thank you.
