Ready…Set…EXPO!!!
Hereford events at the Iowa Winter Beef Expo in Des Moines will kick off on
Wednesday, Feb. 11, with an open forum featuring Jack Ward, chief operating officer
and director of breed improvement for the American Hereford Association. The comeas-you-are,
free event will take place at 5 p.m. in the lower level of the Gammon Barn,
just north of the Beef Barn on the state fairgrounds.
All breeders and interested parties are invited and encouraged to attend this
informative session, during which Ward will give updates and answer questions on a
wide scope of topics, including the various programs of the AHA. Readers are invited
to submit questions, which may be used in future issues of the newsletter.
Thursday, Feb. 12, is sale day for Herefords. Twenty-four consignors have
contributed to the 49-head offering, which boasts an excellent set of yearling, fall
2007 and 2-year-old bulls and bred and open heifers. Included in the female portion of
the sale are 20 heifers born in 2008 that will make great youth projects and showring
contenders. See ad elsewhere in this newsletter for a list of consignors.
The entire set of cattle will be paraded at 9 a.m. in Pioneer Pavilion. The sale
will begin at noon in the North Annex sale ring. Auctioneer is Monte Lowderman.
Those unable to attend may view the auction on the Internet at LiveAuctions.tv.
Approximately 700 catalogs were mailed Jan. 22 to all current IHBA and IJHA
members, previous buyers, commercial cattlemen and others who have requested
them or who registered for a buyer number at the 2008 sale. The catalog is also
available online at www.iowahereford.org or www.herfnet.biz.
As always, cookies are welcome for the Hereford booth for both Wednesday and
Thursday.
Think Spring – Advertising, That Is!
Yes, Old Man Winter will eventually go away, and before you know it, there will
be baby calves romping in the pastures and cattlemen looking for bulls. The IHBA
board will again sponsor a co-op advertising program during bull-buying season, with
ads running in Midwest Marketer and Livestock Plus. Watch for a special informational
mailing to all IHBA members in late February or call Becky now to reserve your spot!

Larson Joins Board
Dave Larson of Albia is the
newest member of the Iowa Hereford
Association Board of Directors. He was
appointed by the board at its November
meeting to fill the unexpired term of
Kevin Johnson, Iowa Falls, who has
resigned.
Three Iowa Herds
Achieve Gold TPR Status
More than 80 Hereford breeders
from 29 states achieved Gold TPR
(Total Performance Records) status for
spring 2009, according to an American
Hereford Association announcement.
The Gold TPR Breeder
recognition is presented to progressive
Hereford breeders who have measured
traits and collected and promptly
submitted performance data at all levels
of production.

Directory Set to Debut
At press time, the 2009-10
edition of the Iowa Hereford Breeders
Association directory is at the printers
and scheduled to mail the first week of
February. The initial mass mailing will
go to some 4,700 commercial cow-calf
producers across Iowa, all county
Extension offices and beef specialists,
major Iowa sale barns and all current
IHBA and IJHA members. Additional
copies will be available at the Beef Expo.

dues by the deadline – this is the
first time in 10 years that we will
have more than 100 members
listed.

provided the financial support.

Manson announce the engagement of
their daughter, Kara, to Ryan Redenius,
son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Redenius of
Belmond. Kara is a graduate of Iowa
Central Community College with an
associate’s degree in nursing and is
employed at Hamilton Hospital. Ryan is
a graduate of Clarion Goldfield High
School and is self-employed. An August
wedding is planned.
Brinks Win Conservation
Award
Brothers Jerry, Jim and George
Brink of J.W. Brink & Sons, Elkader, are
winners of the state’s top soil
conservation award for 2008,
sponsored by the Iowa Farm Bureau
Federation and the Conservation
Districts of Iowa. The no-till farming
program they adopted 14 years ago
carries on the legacy of their late father,
Joe, who signed on as a district soil
conservation cooperator in 1958.

At Anita Calf Sale
This year’s Hereford Influence
Calf Sale at the Anita Livestock Auction
drew its largest consignment yet, with
approximately 500 head (nearly double
the number sold last year). However,
buyers were limited in number and
prices were somewhat soft. Special
attraction was the dispersal of the MM
Herefords herd of the late Luther
Munsinger, Coin.

Iowa Heifer is Reserve Grand at Denver Junior Show!
The Deppe Brothers (Montana, Chance, Austin & Nick) of Maquoketa exhibited the reserve
grand champion Polled Hereford heifer in the 121-head junior show at the National Western
Stock Show in Denver. C Notice Me 8020 ET also placed second in the open show. Another
Deppe entry, C Miss Platinum 8039 ET, won her class in the horned junior show and was
second in the open show.
Herefords Claim Largest Breed Show in Denver
Hereford excitement abounded from the yards to the hill at the National Western Stock
Show, Jan. 14-17. The Hereford breed laid claim to the largest show in Denver with 640 head
of cattle exhibited throughout the 4-day event. There were 354 head in the open show, 121
in the junior show, 30 pens of bulls, seven heifer pens and six carloads.
Hereford activities got underway with Kyle Perez, Nara Vista, NM, judging the junior
show Jan. 14. Pen and carload competition followed Jan. 15. Tommy Coley, Birmingham, IA,
judged the open show on Jan. 16-17.
