SURFACE PREPARATION
All Surfaces
Surfaces to be painted must be smooth, clean, dry free of mildew,
grease or soap films, sanding dust or other contaminants that
might interfere with adhesion. If mildew is present, wash with a
chlorine bleach solution consisting of 1 part bleach with 4 parts
water and a squirt of liquid dish detergent. Rinse well. Let dry. Degloss
existing glossy paints and clear coatings by scuff sanding
with medium grit sandpaper. Do not use steel wool with waterbased
coatings. Remove all loosely adhering and flaking paint by
sanding or wire brushing. Ensure that any remaining old paint is
tightly bonding. Patch all holes and imperfections with a suitable
patching, filler or spackling compound. Sand smooth after drying.
Seal all woods such as cedar and redwood that are prone to tannin
staining (extractive bleeding) with 05130 water-based or 15910V
solvent-based stain blocking primers. It is strongly recommended
that when painting over factory-primed mdf or finger-joint millwork
that a field coat of a sealing-type primer such as 05130 or
15910V be applied first to ensure bubble-free consistent results.
Do not apply when air or surface temperature is below 10°C. or
higher than 35°C, or are forecast to do so during the complete
drying period. Keep product from freezing.
WARNING! If you scrape, sand or remove old lead paint from any
surface you may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE
TO LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS
BRAIN DAMAGE, ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT
WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH
approved respirator to control lead exposure. Carefully clean
up with a wet mop or HEPAvacuum. For additional information,
Canadian customers contact the Product Safety division of Health
Canada at 1-800-O-CANADA, US customers contact the U.S. EPA/
Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD (5323).
RECOMMENDED PRIMER
Pre-Painted Surfaces
De-gloss by sanding and must be soundly adhering prior to
repainting.
