Keep this manual for the safety warnings and
precautions, assembly, operating, inspection,
maintenance and cleaning procedures. Write the
product’s serial number in the back of the manual near
the assembly diagram (or month and year of purchase
if product has no number). Keep this manual and the

1. Use the Compression Tester only in
well‐ventilated areas. A running gasoline/diesel
engine produces carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, orderless, gas
that, if inhaled, can cause serious injury or death.
2. When warming up an engine in preparation
for compression testing, make sure the
vehicle’s transmission is placed in park
(or neutral for a manual transmission)
and the emergency brake is on.
3. Keep hands and fingers away from moving
parts and hot parts of vehicle’s engine.
4. Do not exceed the maximum pressure
capacity of this tester (300 PSI).
5. Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use
common sense when using the tester. Do not use
while you are tired or under the influence of drugs,
alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while
operating testers may result in serious personal injury.
7. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and
balance at all times. This enables better control
of the tester in unexpected situations.
8. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or
jewelry. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away
from hot or moving parts. Loose clothes, jewelry
or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
9. Maintain the Compression Tester. Check for
misalignment or binding of parts, breakage
of parts and any other condition that may
affect the tester’s operation. If damaged,
have the tester repaired before use.
10. Have your tester serviced by a qualified
repair person. This will ensure that the
safety of the tester is maintained.
11. Maintain labels and nameplates on the tester.
These carry important safety information.
If unreadable or missing, contact
Harbor Freight Tools for a replacement.
12. This product is not a toy.
Keep it out of reach of children.
13. People with pacemakers should consult their
physician(s) before use. Being near a running engine
can be an issue. Electromagnetic fields in close
proximity to heart pacemaker could cause pacemaker
interference or pacemaker failure. In addition, people
with pacemakers should:
• Avoid operating alone.
• Use caution when near the coil, spark plug cables,
or distributor of a running engine.
• Turn the vehicle engine off if adjustments
are to be made to the distributor.
14. WARNING: The brass components of this
product contain lead, a chemical known to the
State of California to cause birth defects (or other
reproductive harm).

discussed in this instruction manual cannot

Operating Instructions
Read the ENTIRE IMPORTANT

beginning of this manual including
all text under subheadings therein
before set up or use of this product.
1. If needed, attach the M14 - 1.5 Extension
to the end of the hose.

TO PREVENT SERIOUS INJURY AND DEATH:
Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
Do not run a gasoline or diesel engine in an
enclosed garage or other poorly-ventilated area.
Note: Performing a compression test requires the
work of two individuals; one person to operate
the vehicle’s ignition switch while the other
person operates the Compression Tester.
Note: Good engine cylinder compression will be indicated
by a high initial reading, a progressive buildup, then a
final maximum reading. Poor engine cylinder compression
will be indicated with a low initial reading and a slow
buildup to the final maximum reading. The cylinder
readings should be within 10% of each other. Check
vehicle service manual for acceptable pressure ranges.
Note: These are typical instructions only. Different
engines may require different testing and preparation
procedures. CONSULT AND FOLLOW VEHICLE
SERVICE MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS.
Note: Vehicle’s battery must be fully
charged before this test.

2. Prepare the engine for compression testing
by starting it and allowing it to warm up
to its normal operating temperature.
3. Switch off the ignition.
4. Disconnect all wires from the ignition coil, and
remove all of the spark plugs, making note of which
spark plug wires go to each spark plug location.
5. Insulate coil wires or route them away from
each other and all metal surfaces.
6. Connect the Compression Tester to
the first cylinder of the engine.
7. With the throttle pedal depressed completely,
crank the engine for at least eight revolutions.
While cranking the engine, observe and
record the maximum reading on the
Gauge of the Compression Tester.

8. Once the maximum reading has been
recorded, discontinue cranking the engine.
9. Press the Air Release Button on the
Tester to release air pressure.
10. Remove the Compression Tester
from the first engine cylinder.
11. Repeat steps 6-10 for the remaining engine cylinders.
12. When finished, reinstall the spark plugs and
reconnect all wires. Clean tester, then store
it indoors, out of children’s reach.

Do not use damaged equipment. If abnormal noise or
vibration occurs while using the Compression Tester,
have the problem corrected before further use.
1. BEFORE EACH USE, inspect the general condition
of the tool. Check for broken, cracked or bent parts,
loose or missing parts, any other condition that may
affect its safe operation. If a problem occurs, have the
problem corrected before further use.
Do not use damaged equipment.
2. AFTER USE, wipe external surfaces of the tool
with a clean cloth and mild detergent, then store
indoors, out of reach of children. Do not use
solvents or immerse the Gauge in any liquid.
