In Class I regulated areas where a negative-exposure assessment has not been
done or can’t be done, but exposure levels do not exceed 1 f/cc as an eight-hour
time-weighted average, all employees must be provided with one of the following:
• A tight-fitting powered air-purifying respirator equipped with highefficiency
filters
• A full-facepiece supplied-air respirator operated in the pressure-demand
mode equipped with an auxiliary positive pressure self-contained
breathing apparatus
In addition to the above, if levels do exceed 1 f/cc as an eight-hour time-weighted
average in the Class I regulated area, all employees must be provided with a fullfacepiece
supplied-air respirator operated in the pressure-demand mode equipped
with an auxiliary positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus.
For all other Class II, III, or IV work where levels may exceed the 0.1 f/cc PEL
or 1 f/cc STEL, use the table below to choose the appropriate level of respiratory
protection.
Airborne concentrations of
asbestos or conditions of use
• Not in excess of 1 f/cc (10 X PEL), or
otherwise as required independent of
exposure pursuant to paragraph (h)(2)(iv) of
this section.
• Not in excess of 5 f/cc (50 X PEL)
• Not in excess of 10 f/cc (100 X PEL)
• Not in excess of 100 f/cc (1,000 X PEL)
• Greater than 100 f/cc (>1,000 X PEL) or
unknown, concentration
Required respirator
• Half-mask air-purifying respirator, other than
a disposable respirator, equipped with highefficiency
filters
• Full-facepiece air-purifying respirator
equipped with high-efficiency filters
• Any powered air-purifying respirator
equipped with high-efficiency filters or
any supplied-air respirator operated in
continuous flow mode
• Full-facepiece supplied-air respirator
operated in pressure-demand mode
• Full-facepiece supplied-air respirator
operated in pressure-demand mode
