An observant student <strong>of</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Dawn</strong> or <strong>the</strong> <strong>Kabbalah</strong><br />

will notice that <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> Kabbalistic texts it is that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sepher Yetzirah<br />

which directly influenced parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rituals, diagrams, and teaching <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Dawn</strong>. This is particularly true <strong>of</strong> all <strong>the</strong> concepts involving<br />

geographical direction, when combined with permutations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Divine<br />

name YHVH. For example, at one point during <strong>the</strong> ritual <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 4=7<br />

Grade <strong>of</strong> Philosophus, <strong>the</strong> Candidate is shown a diagram (see following<br />

page) and is told by <strong>the</strong> Hegemon:<br />

The Sepher Yetzirah divides <strong>the</strong> ten numbers into a<br />

Tetrad, answering to <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Living Elohim: Air,<br />

Water, and Fire; and a Hexad, consisting <strong>of</strong> Height,<br />

Depth, East, West, South, and North, <strong>the</strong> six sides <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

cube sealed with <strong>the</strong> six permutations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> letters YOD<br />

HEH and VAU <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sacred Name.<br />

In Chapter 2, <strong>the</strong> Three Mo<strong>the</strong>r Letters <strong>of</strong> Aleph, Mem, and Shin<br />

are directly related to <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> Air, Water, and Fire. The letters as a<br />

whole are <strong>the</strong>n able to be broken down and related to everything created<br />

with particular emphasis being placed on <strong>the</strong> pronunciation. The 22 letters<br />

are <strong>the</strong>n formed into 231 gates. These gates are formed by adding each<br />

Hebrew letter with ano<strong>the</strong>r letter, following a certain pattern. For example<br />

<strong>the</strong> first letter Aleph is <strong>the</strong>n placed with every o<strong>the</strong>r letter totalling 21<br />

permutations. Beth is placed with every o<strong>the</strong>r letter (excluding <strong>the</strong> one<br />

before it, Aleph) which gives 20 permutations. Gimel is paired with every<br />

36 The first four directions are Spirit, Air, Water, and Fire, which are <strong>the</strong> throne on which <strong>the</strong> directions<br />

are based, The directions proper actually starr in <strong>the</strong> text from <strong>the</strong> fifth.<br />

37 The actual formation. <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> letters here forms a cube, commonly called <strong>the</strong> "Cube <strong>of</strong> Space."<br />

38 The Altar as described in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Dawn</strong>'s Neophyre rituals is based on this chapter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
