176 The <strong>Kabbalah</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Dawn</strong><br />

Let us now notice <strong>the</strong> blessings <strong>of</strong> Jacob and Moses, and<br />

compare <strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong> Signs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Zodiac attributed to each<br />

Tribe. We shall take <strong>the</strong>m in <strong>the</strong> Zodiacal order.<br />

Of Gad (Aries), Jacob says, "Gad, a troop shall overcome<br />

him, but he shall overcome at <strong>the</strong> last." Moses says, "Blessed<br />

be he that enlargerh Gad: he dwelleth as a lion, and teareth<br />

<strong>the</strong> arm with <strong>the</strong> crown <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> head, and he provideth <strong>the</strong> first<br />

part for himself because <strong>the</strong>re, in a portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> law-giver,<br />

was he sealed; and he came with <strong>the</strong> heads <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people, he<br />

executed <strong>the</strong> justice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord, and his judgements with<br />

Israel." The armorial bearings <strong>of</strong> Gad are, white, a troop <strong>of</strong><br />

cavalry. All this coincides well with <strong>the</strong> martial and dominant<br />

nature <strong>of</strong> Aries, <strong>the</strong> only one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> twelve signs in which <strong>the</strong><br />

superior planets alone bear sway, for ir is <strong>the</strong> House <strong>of</strong> Mars,<br />

exaltation <strong>of</strong> Sun and triplicity <strong>of</strong> Sun and Jupiter. The symbolism<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lion is also proper to Aries on account <strong>of</strong> its<br />

solar, fiery and martial nature.<br />

Of Ephraim and Manasseh (Taurus and Gemini), classed<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r under <strong>the</strong>ir fa<strong>the</strong>r's name, Jacob says, "Joseph is a fruitful<br />

bough, even a fruitful bough by a well, whose branches run<br />

over <strong>the</strong> wall; <strong>the</strong> archers have surely grieved him and shot at<br />

him, and hated him: but his bow abode in strength, and <strong>the</strong><br />

arms <strong>of</strong> his hands were made strong by <strong>the</strong> hands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mighty<br />

God <strong>of</strong> Jacob; (from <strong>the</strong>nce is <strong>the</strong> shepherd, <strong>the</strong> stone <strong>of</strong><br />

Israel): Even by <strong>the</strong> God <strong>of</strong> thy fa<strong>the</strong>r, who shall help <strong>the</strong>e, and<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Almighty who shall bless <strong>the</strong>e with blessings<strong>of</strong> Heaven<br />

above, blessings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deep that lieth under, blessings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

breasts and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> womb: <strong>the</strong> blessings <strong>of</strong> thy fa<strong>the</strong>r have prevailed<br />

above <strong>the</strong> blessings <strong>of</strong> my progenitors unto <strong>the</strong> utmost<br />

bound <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> everlasting hills: <strong>the</strong>y shall be on <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong><br />

Joseph, and on <strong>the</strong> crown <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> him who was separate<br />

from his brethren." Mosessays, "Blessed<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord be his land,<br />

for <strong>the</strong> precious things <strong>of</strong> heaven, for <strong>the</strong> dew, and for <strong>the</strong> deep<br />

that coucheth beneath, and for <strong>the</strong> precious fruits brought forth<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Sun, and for <strong>the</strong> precious things put forth by <strong>the</strong> moon,<br />

and for <strong>the</strong> chief things <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lasting hills. And for <strong>the</strong> precious<br />

things <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth, and <strong>the</strong> fullness <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>, and for <strong>the</strong> good<br />

will <strong>of</strong> him that dwells in <strong>the</strong> bush: let <strong>the</strong> blessing come upon<br />

<strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> Joseph, and upon <strong>the</strong> top <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> head <strong>of</strong> him that<br />

wasseparate from his brethren. His glory is like <strong>the</strong> firstling <strong>of</strong><br />

a bullock, and his horns are like <strong>the</strong> horns <strong>of</strong> unicorns: with<br />

<strong>the</strong>m hc shall push <strong>the</strong> people toge<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong> ends <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong> tcn thousands <strong>of</strong>M:masseh."
