sources. The first is <strong>the</strong> Palestinian Talmud which was compiled around<br />
<strong>the</strong> fourth century, and <strong>the</strong> second and largest is <strong>the</strong> Babylonian Talmud,I<br />
conceived about a century later. The latter is almost two-thirds larger<br />
than <strong>the</strong> former.<br />
The substance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Talmud is divided into two parts, <strong>the</strong> MISH<br />
NAH and GHEMARAH.<br />
The MISHNAH is a word relating to "repetitions,"Z-3 and signifying<br />
<strong>the</strong> methods <strong>of</strong> teaching. A large body <strong>of</strong> its teaching prior to <strong>the</strong> second<br />
century C.E. was compiled from earlier documents from <strong>the</strong> teachings <strong>of</strong><br />
Rabbi's Hillel, Simeon, and Abba with <strong>the</strong> final draft by Rabbi Judah<br />
l larnassi in 220 C.E. 4 It was divided into six sections:<br />
1. Prayer in relation to produce and crops and <strong>the</strong>ir preparation<br />
and prohibition (11 chapters).<br />
2. Observance <strong>of</strong> festivals and food preparations <strong>the</strong>reon. This<br />
also includes days <strong>of</strong> abstinence and annual sacrifice (12<br />
chapters).<br />
3. Marriage and prohibitions. Engagements, divorce, and adultery<br />
(7 chapters).<br />
4. Damages, buying and selling. General punishments. Advice to<br />
judges. Matters <strong>of</strong> idolatry and moral proverbs (10 chapters).<br />
5. Holy <strong>of</strong>ferings. Taxation. The 36 sins <strong>of</strong> death (11 chapters).<br />
6. Purifications (12 chapters).<br />
