The Soul <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> <strong>Kabbalah</strong><br />

as <strong>the</strong> preparation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Pat</strong>hway for <strong>the</strong> Shining Light, <strong>the</strong><br />

Light Divine.<br />

The evil persona <strong>of</strong> a man is in <strong>the</strong> Sphere <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Qlippoth,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> devils are <strong>the</strong> microcosms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Macrocosm <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Qlippoth. This evil persona hath its parts and divisions, and <strong>of</strong><br />

it <strong>the</strong> part which toucheth <strong>the</strong> Malkuth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Nephesch is its<br />

Ke<strong>the</strong>r. Tremble <strong>the</strong>refore at <strong>the</strong> evil forces which be in thy<br />

own evil persona. And as above <strong>the</strong> Ke<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> a man are his<br />

Angelic and o<strong>the</strong>r forms, so below <strong>the</strong> Malkuth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Evil<br />

Persona are awful forms, dangerous even to express or think <strong>of</strong>.<br />

SHEKINAH110<br />

THE FEMININE FACE OF GOD<br />

123<br />

Possiblyone <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most confusing <strong>the</strong>ories within Kabbalistic teaching is<br />

that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shekinah. Within <strong>the</strong> <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Dawn</strong>'s Outer Order <strong>the</strong> Shekinah,<br />

or more simply <strong>the</strong> female aspect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deity, is only briefly mentioned.<br />

A number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Order's critics have <strong>of</strong>ten felt that <strong>the</strong> Order was<br />

too patriarchal. This applies, if at all, however, only to <strong>the</strong> levels up to <strong>the</strong><br />

Inner Order, for <strong>the</strong> rituals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 6=5 upwards are under <strong>the</strong> guidance <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Shekinah or Matrona as it is sometimes called, and <strong>the</strong> apparent<br />

patriarchal aspect is <strong>the</strong>n reversed.<br />

To describe <strong>the</strong> function <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Shekinah is very difficult because<br />

many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mystics, who recorded seeing <strong>the</strong> Shekinah, found that it<br />

appeared on many different levels and this is <strong>the</strong> point <strong>of</strong> confusion. The<br />

Shekinah is very closely allied, though not identical with <strong>the</strong> soul, both<br />

on individual and group levels. Its relationship with <strong>the</strong> soul is close and<br />

strong, not unlike that between womb and fetus, for <strong>the</strong> Shekinah is <strong>the</strong><br />

aspect <strong>of</strong> God that cradles and nurtures <strong>the</strong> soul. It is also called Eden<br />

(<strong>the</strong> Upper Eden). In <strong>the</strong> Zohar lll we are introduced to <strong>the</strong> Shekinah in<br />

<strong>the</strong> feminine word "mihalekh," which is <strong>the</strong> voice <strong>of</strong> God heard in <strong>the</strong><br />

Garden <strong>of</strong> Eden "in <strong>the</strong> coolness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> day."1l2 When applied to <strong>the</strong><br />

tribes <strong>of</strong> Israel, <strong>the</strong> Shekinahguided <strong>the</strong>m in Exodus 13:21. A reference<br />

to this guidance is also found in Psalms (85:13) where it states that "<strong>the</strong><br />

Just One goes before him and shall deliver him from his steps," which also<br />

110This word refers to something dwelling within.<br />
