112 The <strong>Kabbalah</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> <strong>Golden</strong> <strong>Dawn</strong><br />

The body <strong>of</strong> Joseph was never under <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

impure spirit although his soul (Neschamnah and<br />

Ruach) had left him when he had not yet entered <strong>the</strong><br />

Holy Land.<br />

Besides <strong>the</strong> example <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> body <strong>of</strong> Joseph, we also have hard physical<br />

evidence <strong>of</strong> this situation occurring in some Catholic saints, where<br />

decomposition does not occur. The soul, or shell <strong>of</strong> it, remains (for us<br />

mere mortals) in <strong>the</strong> body till <strong>the</strong> moment <strong>of</strong> death for this is <strong>the</strong> sum<br />

total <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> personality and it must have <strong>the</strong> three phases functioning correctly<br />

for it to function at all. Since <strong>the</strong> Zelem has gone, <strong>the</strong> energy for<br />

this is drawn from <strong>the</strong> shell <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Neschamah, which has stored power<br />

prior to <strong>the</strong> death just for this purpose, before <strong>the</strong> Zdem withdraws.<br />

Without it, <strong>the</strong> body would not be able to function through any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

senses. In <strong>the</strong> Talmud are listed in excess <strong>of</strong> 900 different kinds <strong>of</strong> death,<br />

from <strong>the</strong> easiest to <strong>the</strong> most painful.<br />

The Yechidah has, before death, certain functions to carry out and<br />

<strong>the</strong>se are done in <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> Briah. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se functions are preparatory<br />

and depend on <strong>the</strong> type <strong>of</strong> life lead by <strong>the</strong> individual. The Yechidah<br />

must also find a place for <strong>the</strong> Ruach, and this level or place is determined<br />

by <strong>the</strong> Ruach's actions during <strong>the</strong> previous life on earth. For we are told<br />

in <strong>the</strong> Zahar 106 that if <strong>the</strong> Neschamah is prevented from attaining <strong>the</strong><br />

place set aside for it, <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> Ruach and Nephesch cannot enter <strong>the</strong><br />

Garden <strong>of</strong> Eden. It must <strong>the</strong>n roam <strong>the</strong> various planes and experience fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

suffering by observation until <strong>the</strong> Most High has considered that it<br />

can <strong>the</strong>n enter its abode, which <strong>of</strong> course opens <strong>the</strong> door for <strong>the</strong> Ruach,<br />

as well, to rest in <strong>the</strong> world <strong>of</strong> Yetzirah. Although <strong>the</strong> Zahar is not clear on<br />

this point, <strong>the</strong> three phases <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> soul can be considered to occur in <strong>the</strong><br />

Gehinnon (a type <strong>of</strong> Hell associated with <strong>the</strong> Catholic concept <strong>of</strong>Purgatory).<br />

It is in cases like this that supernatural occurrences <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most<br />

unpleasant kind occur. For Job 25:22 says:<br />

But flesh upon him shall have pain and his soul within<br />

him shall mourn.<br />
