about
With so many products that are far removed from nature, Lava
Bambū ® allows therapists the opportunity to perform a naturally
heated massage without the use of additional equipment or
electricity.
Each Lava Bambū ® Zen Stick has been designed to replicate the
beautiful bamboo stalks that grace the land of South China. Made
with high quality porcelain, Zen Sticks are a combination of strength
and flexibility, creating a beautiful implement for deep and effective
massage therapy.
The only self-heating bamboo massage tool, Lava Bambū ® utilizes the
unique technology of Lava Gel ® , a natural synergy of ocean inspired
elements, that combines minerals, black lava, dried sea kelp, and
algae to create the foundation for up to 30-minutes of deep heat.
Lava Bambū ® is a unique and innovative massage tool that provides
a deep sense of relaxation and well-being. Therapists will also
benefit from using Lava Bambū ® , as it reduces stress and strain to the
massage therapists hands during deep tissue work.
The uniqueness of Lava Bambū ® massage is its power of warmth
and touch. There is a receptive awareness between the giver and
receiver, creating an exclusive experience with each use. The
quality of the treatment comes from the carefully tuned “listening
skills” of the therapist’s technique and practice, and their ability to
tailor the warmth of Lava Bambū ® to the massage environment and
the recipient’s body type and personal comfort level.
5
We encourage you to experiment and become familiar with the
qualities of your Lava Bambū ® in order to find the best method of
usage to fit your professional application.

LAVA GEL ® HEAT SLEEVES
Made with high quality porcelain,
Zen Sticks are self-heating tools for
use in full-body massage. Lava
Bambū ® does not use electricity and
begins to heat immediately naturally
using an all-natural mineral recation
activated by salt water. One end
of the Zen Stick features a rounded
knob for use in targeted massage or
on pressure points.
Thin non-heating bamboo sticks
used for facial, foot, or small pressure
point massage. Each end features
rounded wooden tips for use on
pressure points.
A natural synergy of ocean inspired
elements, Lava Gel ® Heat Sleeves
combine minerals, black lava, dried
sea kelp, and algae to create the
foundation for long lasting deep heat.
The Heat Sleeves are segmented into
7 sections. The center charge is a
short-lived “wild” charge that allows
the Zen Stick to heat immediately.
The 6 outside “mild” charges allow
the Zen Stick to maintain its heat for
up to 30-minutes.
Inspired by earth, BE ® Grounded opens
with a fresh lemon citrus accord, accented
by notes of basil and amber. Natural
characters of cedarwood, sandalwood,
agarwood, and patchouli combine
with fir needle, spicy clove, and ginger
undertones. Base notes of musk and rich
vanilla complete the woodsy accord.
Inspired by water, BE ® Purified was born
from the sea, the sun, and the breeze
of a Mediterranean island. Transparent,
aromatic, and fresh in nature, this
fragrance exhibits an aura of marine notes,
bergamot, mandarin fruits, and rosemary
herbs, enveloped in amber patchouli.
Inspired by air, BE ® Weightless offers a fresh,
bright scent that simulates a breath of
fresh air. Opening with a grapefruit lemon
top note, the fragrance transforms to a
dominant watery floral accord that gives
a water lily floral impression in the body.
A lingering base note of amber light musk
ties this fragrance together.
Inspired by fire, BE ® Ignited is a spicy
oriental fragrance featuring musk, amber,
benzoin, rose, vanilla, and mystical spices.
The fragrance opens with a lemon,
bergamot top note and the body features
a light jasmine and rose accord. The dry
down exudes spicy vanilla and amber
notes with a dominant musk finish.
safety
With any heated product, safety must always be your primary
concern. It is imperative that you understand all of the guidelines for
safe use and follow them whenever using Lava Bambū ® Zen Sticks.
lava gel ® heat sleeveS - how they heat
Lava Gel ® Heat Sleeves are segmented into 7 sections. The middle
section is a short-lived “wild” charge, that allows the Zen Stick to heat
immediately. As the “wild” charge starts to subside, the 6 outside
“mild” charges will begin to activate. For this reason, it is not safe to
use the Zen Stick until 6-8 minutes after activation, as the wild charge
will still be active and the Zen Stick may be too hot. Once activated,
a Zen Stick will continue to generate heat for up to 30-minutes. As the
Zen Stick is used, it will naturally transfer heat to the body and cool;
when set aside and/or not moving on the skin, it will begin increasing
in temperature.
The Rule Of thumb
When the Zen Stick is in use, thermal energy sinks out of it and it cools;
set it aside and it continues to generate heat. Because of this, the
Zen Stick should never be set aside for more than 2-3 minutes at a
time after activation. Whenever it is set aside, you must always test its
temperature before placing it against a client’s skin again. Because
your hands will be more accustomed to the heat from holding the
Zen Stick often, you should check the temperature against another
part of your body before use (against your wrist, inner arm, or neck,
for example—somewhere where the skin is relatively thin).
13

Heat Management
IMPORTANT: If the Zen Stick is too hot to be comfortable for you, it is
more than likely TOO HOT FOR THE CLIENT. Always test first with your
hands, then with another area of your skin, then the client. Remember,
people react to heat differently, and what feels comfortable or even
cool to you may be too hot for someone else. When using a Zen Stick
that has been away from the client, ask the client if the temperature
is comfortable, or instruct them at the beginning of the treatment to
advise you immediately if it feels too warm.
When you test the Zen Stick on a client, first make sure you tell them
you are placing it on their skin. Then, gently touch the Zen Stick
on the skin while moving it. Do not place directly on skin and hold
stationary. It is imperative to understand that usage of the Zen Stick
is what causes it to cool. Long strokes will transfer more heat from
the Zen Stick to the client’s body, while short strokes will transmit less
heat. Consequently, inactivity will cause it to get warmer as there is
no recipient for the heat to transfer. If you allow the Zen Stick to rest,
and then reintroduce it later during the treatment, it will be very hot.
You will need to cool the Zen Stick before using it again.
how to cool ZEN STICKS
If the Zen Stick ever becomes too hot, always be prepared to cool it.
Simply place the Zen Stick in a very damp and tepid towel and wrap
it up for 5-10 seconds, to sink the heat and reduce its temperature to
a comfortable level.
Once activated, do not leave the Zen Stick unattended until it has
cooled or the Lava Gel ® Heat Sleeve has been removed. Always
allow the Zen Stick to cool completely before removing the Heat
Sleeve.
14

prep & clean up
STEP ONE
Open 12-pack Lava Gel ® Heat Sleeve pouch and remove one
Heat Sleeve. Immediately reseal the pouch to keep the other
Heat Sleeves fresh. Be sure to press out any excess air in the
pouch, as moisture will cause the Heat Sleeves to activate.
STEP TWO
Remove cork from Zen Stick. Fold Lava Gel ® Heat Sleeve in half
legthwise and insert the folded Heat Sleeve into the hollow Zen Stick,
pinching top edge of Heat Sleeve against Zen Stick so that it does
not slide down.
STEP THREE
Open Activator Solution. While maintaining hold of Heat Sleeve, tilt
Zen Stick at a 45-degree angle and slowly pour Activator Solution
evenly over Heat Sleeve. Securely replace cork, pinching top edge
of Heat Sleeve between Zen Stick and cork.
STEP FOUR
Set Zen Stick on its side and gently rock from side to side and roll
back and forth on tabletop to evenly disperse Activator Solution,
approximately 30 seconds - 1 minute. This will ensure that the heat
will be equally distributed along the length of the Zen Stick and will
discourage hot spots from forming.
Psssst...
Do not be alarmed if some water dribbles out of the cork vent hole.
15

NOTE
Zen Sticks will begin to heat immediately. A bloom of heat will first be
noticeable at the center. At about 6-8 minutes, the heat will span the
entire length of the Zen Stick and the massage can be started. Once fully
activated, the Zen Stick will stay warm for up to 30-minutes.
STEP FIVE
At the end of the massage, allow the Zen Stick to cool completely
and then remove the cork. Turn Zen Stick upside down and gently
flick out and dispose of the non-toxic Lava Gel ® Heat Sleeve. Rinse
out any remaining gel residue with warm water and wash the cork.
Treat outside of Zen Stick with a gentle, microbial cleanser. Plain,
abrasive soap and water may dull the beautiful porcelain finish.
Lava Bambū ® massage is a technique that not only makes use of our
patented self-heating technology, but also connects us to ancient
approaches. When used in conjunction with the Basic Elements ®
massage oil, all of the senses are awakened.
EQUIPMENT
1 Zen Stick
1 Lava Bambū ® Charge (Lava Gel ® Heat Sleeve + Activator Solution)
2 Batiki Sticks
1 Lava Bambū ® Fan
Basic Elements ® Massage Oil
3 Warm, Moist Hand Towels (kept warm in towel cabi, etc.)
1 Dry Hand Towel
PROCEDURE - PRONE
STEP ONE
Once you have escorted your client to the treatment room and
thoroughly explained the service, instruct the client to disrobe and
lie prone on the massage table between the 2 sheets, as prepared.
STEP TWO
When you step out of the room and while client is disrobing, activate
1 Zen stick as directed and cocoon in dry hand towel so that it may
begin to charge properly.
STEP THREE
Upon re-entering the treatment room, ensure client comfort level,
placing bolster under ankles.
17

STEP FOUR
Clear the client’s energy field with the Lava Bambū ® fan, much as
you would if you were preparing to do energy work.
STEP FIVE
Begin the massage with full body compressions, also allowing the
Zen stick to fully activate.
STEP SIX
Undrape the back, giving a firm spinal stretch on both sides of the
spine, elongating the erectors.
STEP SEVEN
By now, about 7-8 minutes has elapsed (since activating the Zen
stick outside the treatment room) and the Zen Stick should be fully
charged. Apply oil and begin the massage with the Zen stick with
long, smooth effleurage strokes on the back.
STEP EIGHT
Using the Zen stick, roll as you would with a rolling pin, across soft
tissue only. Avoid all bony landmarks with the Zen stick.
STEP NINE
Continue with the Zen stick, using a see-saw motion (holding each
end of the stick while stroking over the soft tissue of the back,
particularly in the lumbar and gluteal muscles).
STEP TEN
Rotate the Zen stick to a vertical position, using the rounded end to
compress in a circular manner, particularly the gluteal muscles and
around the sacrum.
STEP ELEVEN
Once again, long effleurage strokes with the Zen stick, pausing at
the upper trapezius; elongating and flattening the upper trapezius
with compression and pushing effect.
18

30-minute protocoL
continued
STEP TWELVE
Stroke from the upper trapezius down the back of the arm, warming
the deltoids and triceps.
STEP THIRTEEN
Replace the Zen stick (cocoon in the dry towel at all times when not in
use so that it re-charges) with the Batiki stick and in a vertical position,
complete hand work, compressing and rocking into pressure points
of the hand. Stroke up the back of the arm and into the neck with
the Batiki stick, turn into a vertical position once again and compress
into levator scapula and all along occipital ridge.
STEP FOURTEEN
Repeat Steps 8-13 on the other side of the back until the entire back
has been massaged (15 minutes on back & arms). Retrieve warm,
moist towel from cabi & compress on the back. Redrape the back.
(about 22 minutes has elapsed)
SUPINE
STEP FIFTEEN
Turn the client supine, ensuring the comfort level. Clear the energy
field of the supine body with the Lava Bambū ® fan.
STEP SIXTEEN
Take a moment or two to apply full body compressions, allowing the
client to settle in and relax, while the Zen stick is re-charging fully.
19

STEP SEVENTEEN
Beginning supine, at the client’s head, give a thorough scalp
massage. Bring the client to total relaxation with a still point hold
(cranial sacral technique).
STEP EIGHTEEN
Turn client’s head to the side, using the Batiki stick (turned vertical),
apply pressure on points throughout the upper trapezious and
occipital ridge (much like you would do with your finger tips). Repeat
on both sides of the neck.
STEP NINETEEN
Apply oil to the neck and shoulders. Turn the client’s head to the
side again; using the Zen stick roll through the upper trapezious and
SCM. This movement elongates, while relaxing, the muscles with the
warmth of the stick. Repeat on both sides of the neck with the Zen
stick (about 3-4 minutes per side of neck). Retrieve the warm, moist
towels from the cabi and cocoon the feet while compressing and
performing Range of Motion of the ankle.
STEP TWENTY
At this point, the massage is complete and you will finish according
to your own standards.
it is ready for activator to be poured into the stick about 1/2 way
through the service.
21
STEP THREE
Upon re-entering the treatment room, ensure client comfort level,
placing bolster under ankles.

Replace the Zen stick (cocoon in the dry towel at all times when
not in use so that it re-charges) with the Batiki stick and in a vertical
position, complete hand work, compressing and rocking into pressure
points of the hand.
STEP FOURTEEN
Stroke up the back of the arm and into the neck with the Batiki stick,
turn into a vertical position once again and compress into levator
scapula and all along occipital ridge.
STEP FIFTEEN
Repeat on the other side of the back until the entire back has been
massaged (15 minutes on back and arms).
STEP SIXTEEN
Redrape the back; and transfer to one leg; undrape the leg and
apply oil.
STEP SEVENTEEN
Begin massage on posterior leg with the Zen stick (which has been
cocooned in a towel so that it can re-charge) with long full leg
effleurage strokes.
23

STEP EIGHTEEN
For more specific leg work, use the Zen stick much as you would
a rolling pin in order to warm the large hamstring muscles, gluteal
muscles and gastrocnemius. This movement not only warms the
muscles, but also assists in flattening and elongating, allowing the
muscles to relax.
STEP NINETEEN
Once you’ve thoroughly warmed and relaxed the leg muscles,
cocoon the Zen stick and use the Batiki stick for pressure point work
around the greater trochanter, the Achilles and finish off with foot
work.
STEP TWENTY
Sweep the full leg with effleurage, using the Zen stick and re-drape
this leg. Cocoon the Zen stick.
STEP TWENTY-ONE
Repeat this process on the other leg (about 5 minutes per leg).
STEP TWENTY-TWO
After completing the 2 nd leg, but before turning the client supine;
activate the 2 nd Zen stick by pouring activator into the stick which
has been prepared with the sachet (32-33 minutes has elapsed at
this point.)
SUPINE
STEP TWENTY-THREE
Turn the client supine, ensuring the comfort level. Clear the energy
field of the supine body with the Lava Bambū ® fan.
STEP TWENTY-FOUR
Take a moment or two to apply full body compressions, allowing the
client to settle in and relax, while the 2 nd Zen stick is charging fully.
24

60-minute protocoL
continued
STEP TWENTY-FIVE
Beginning supine, at the client’s head, give a thorough scalp
massage.
STEP TWENTY-SIX
Turn client’s head to the side, using the Batiki stick (turned vertical),
apply pressure on points throughout the upper trapezious and
occipital ridge (much like you would do with your finger tips). Repeat
on both sides of the neck.
STEP TWENTY-SEVEN
About 8 minutes has elapsed by this point and the 2 nd Zen stick should
be fully charged and ready to use.
STEP TWENTY-EIGHT
Apply oil to the neck and shoulders. Turn the client’s head to the
side again; using the Zen stick roll through the upper trapezious and
SCM. This movement elongates, while relaxing, the muscles with the
warmth of the stick. Repeat on both sides of the neck with the Zen
stick (about 3-4 minutes per side of neck).
STEP TWENTY-NINE
Cocoon the Zen stick and bring the client to total relaxation with a
still point hold (cranial sacral technique).
STEP THIRTY
Transition to the arm; undrape and apply oil.
25

STEP THIRTY-ONE
Begin using the Zen stick on the arm to warm the muscle tissue.
(Depending on the size of the client and muscle mass, you may or
may not choose to use the Zen stick to warm the arm.)
STEP THIRTY-TWO
Finish the arm using the batiki Stick, particularly if the client is small
frame.
STEP THIRTY-THREE
Repeat on the other arm (about 2-3 minutes per arm).
STEP THIRTY-FOUR
Remember to cocoon the Zen stick anytime it is not in use so that it
can recharge and re-charge.
STEP THIRTY-FIVE
Transition to the leg; undrape and apply oil.
STEP THIRTY-SIX
Using the Zen stick, begin rolling with long full leg effleurage strokes
to warm the quadriceps. (Avoid all bony landmarks of the leg when
using both Zen & Batiki sticks.)
STEP THIRTY-SEVEN
Bend the leg at the knee, securing the foot in place by sitting gently
on it. Roll with the Zen stick up the gastrocnemius from this position.
STEP THIRTY-EIGHT
Also, roll the quadriceps with the leg in this position.
STEP THIRTY-NINE
Tilt the leg toward center (with the leg still bent) and roll or see-saw
through the ITBand.
26

60-minute protocoL
continued
STEP FORTY
Beginning supine, at the client’s head, give a thorough scalp
massage.
STEP FORTY-ONE
Repeat on other leg (about 4-5 minutes per leg).
STEP FORTY-TWO
Once both legs have been completed and re-draped, retrieve
the warm, moist towels from the cabi and cocoon the feet while
compressing and performing Range of Motion of the ankle. (This also
removes any residual oil from the feet.)
STEP FORTY-THREE
At this point, the massage is complete and you will finish according
to your own standards.
faqs
Zen Sticks will stay warm for up to 30-minutes, depending
on the method of application. Long strokes will shed the
heat more quickly than short strokes. Allowing your Zen
Stick resting periods to “re-charge” will help extend the
heat duration.
HOW LONG WILL
ZEN STICKS STAY
WARM?
HOW LONG
DO ZEN STICKS
TAKE TO HEAT?
Immediately, a bloom of heat will be noticeable at the
center of the Zen Stick. The heat will then begin to span the
entire length of the Zen Stick at approximately 8 minutes.
To accelerate the heating process of Zen Sticks, fill the Zen
Stick with warm water. Empty contents prior to activating.
It is also recommended to cocoon the Zen Stick in a dry
hand towel while activating and “re-charging.”
HOW CAN I
ACCELERATE
THE HEATING
PROCESS?
WHEN IS IT SAFE
TO REMOVE
THE LAVA GEL ® ?
At the end of the massage, allow the Zen Stick to cool
completely and then remove the cork and dispose of the
non-toxic Lava Gel ® Heat Sleeve.
Lava Gel ® Heat Sleeves contain natural ingredients that are
non-toxic and are not harmful if touched. All ingredients
inside of Lava Gel ® Heat Sleeves are biodegradable.
IS LAVA GEL ®
TOXIC?
HOW STRONG IS
A ZEN STICK?
CAN I BREAK IT?
Zen Sticks are made of high quality porcelain. Zen Sticks
are very durable and can be used for deep pressure work
without any worry about breaking. It is possible to chip
or break if dropped, but if handled with appropriate care
they will last indefinitely. Differences in massage technique
and handling make it impossible to determine its shelf life.
do’s
• After retrieving the Lava Gel ® Heat Sleeve from pouch, immediately
reseal it to keep other Heat Sleeves fresh. Be sure to press out any
excess air in the pouch, as moisture will cause the Heat Sleeves to
activate.
• When activating your Zen Stick, always maintain hold of the top
end of Lava Gel ® Heat Sleeve to keep it from sliding down. Hold
Zen Stick at a 45-degree angle and slowly pour Activator Solution
evenly over Heat Sleeve. Securely replace cork, pinching top end
of Heat Sleeve between Zen Stick and cork.
• To evenly disperse Activator Solution, set Zen Stick on its side and
gently rock from side to side or roll back and forth on table top,
approximately 30 seconds - 1 minute. This will ensure that the heat
will be equally distributed along the length of the Zen Stick and will
discourage hot spots from forming.
• Wait 6-8 minutes after activation before starting the massage.
• Usage of the Zen Stick is what causes it to cool. To transfer more
heat from the Zen Stick to the client’s body, use long strokes. Use
short strokes to transmit less heat. Inactivity will cause it to get
warmer, as there is no recipient for the heat to transfer.
• If your Zen Stick becomes too hot, simply wrap it in a tepid, damp
cloth until desired temperature is achieved.
• Allow Zen Stick to cool completely before removing Lava Gel ®
Heat Sleeve.
29
• Use a gentle, microbial cleanser to wash the Zen Stick. Plain,
abrasive soap and water may dull the beautiful porcelain finish.

don’ts
• Do not cover the cork vent hole with your hand, as it may be hot.
• Do not put the cork vent hole up to your ear to listen, as it will be
hot.
• Do not begin the massage immediately after activation, as the
“wild” charge will still be active and the Zen Stick may be too hot.
• Be careful to not drop the Zen Stick. While made with high quality
porcelain, it can chip and/or break if not handled properly.
• When Zen Sticks are in use, thermal energy sinks out of it and it
cools; set it aside and it continues to generate heat. Because of
this, Zen Sticks should never be set aside for more than 2-3 minutes
at a time after activation.
• Avoid using massage oils that have a high concentration of
essential oil, as essential oils can go rancid over time when exposed
to heat.
