Letter from the General Manager
Boy that went fast. I don’t know about you but it seems to me that
although the calendar says there were 95 days between Memorial
Day and Labor Day this year, summer was almost a blur. Hockessin
Athletic Club is always bustling, but summers seem to add even more
positive energy as our camps fill up and swim team gets under way. Our
Waterside Grille continued to be a big hit with a revised menu and the
opportunity to enjoy fabulous food and beverages while lounging by our
pool. Inside the club we have undertaken a couple of significant projects
which will improve our members’ experience. First, as more and more of
our members have discovered the significant health benefits of regular
massage, we have found it necessary to add a fourth room to keep up
with demand. As an added benefit, the room has been constructed
to accommodate couples massages, which many of our members have
inquired about.
Another project we have started is the construction of a 3,000 square
foot dedicated personal training studio. Located in the former Pro
PT space, it will be equipped with the latest in functional training
apparatus. It will also serve the purpose of alleviating congestion on
the main fitness floor, particularly during peak hours. The role of our
present fitness desk will be expanded in to a “fitness concierge” role
where all members can receive information on anything from how to
operate equipment to how-to questions on specific exercises.
In addition to our special projects, we continue to invest in our club.
Planned purchases for the fall include twenty new spin bikes and a half
a dozen new treadmills and elliptical trainers, as well as keeping an eye
out for some new “toys” for the children’s area.
If you haven’t tried out the Hockessin Athletic Club, I encourage you to
do so. If the thought of a long term contract intimidates you, we offer the
convenience of a month to month option. Still
having cold feet? Stop by for a free day pass. If
you are already a member we, as always, are
grateful for your business.
Sincerely,
John Peoples
General Manager
These Members Experienced WOW
at Hockessin Athletic Club
As part of our Fifth Anniversary celebration,
HAC has committed to delivering WOW-worthy
service to our members.
Delivering "WOW" is part of our Principles of
Member Engagement platform that tasks each staff
member with three simple items that will make our
members' experience at Hockessin Athletic Club
even better.
In an effort to effectively implement the new
platform, HAC has recently hired a new Customer
Service Director to not only oversee our front
line staff at the Front Desk, but to help plan and
implement effective customer service training for all
staff at HAC, including managers.
Your Staff at
Hockessin Athletic Club
“There has been a visible transformation in the
cafe since Michele took over. The cafe employees
seem happier and things seem to run much more
smoothly! I am especially impressed with the new
menu - not only is there a wider variety of choices,
but the prices are better and ingredients more
cohesive. Michele has done a fabulous job of
removing fluff while keeping rich taste!”
“Dina Moore is an amazing personal trainer. She
takes the time to truly understand her clients and
creates workouts for them that work perfectly with
their physical abilities.”
"I just wanted...to thank you, Kate, for your excellent
swim lessons this summer. Ashley learned so much
from you, and has been able to improve quite a
bit with practice. She is currently swimming...in
the top Intermediate group. She has even joined
USA swimming and is becoming a very serious
competitive swimmer. I know this is due partly to her
persistence, and largely to your instruction. Thanks
for caring and teaching so effectively."
I just wanted you to know how very much I enjoy working with
JoJo as a trainer. She is very disciplined and focused -- just what I
need.
I was a member of the club for one year before selecting a
trainer. I watched all the trainers with their clients to determine their
style. I wanted to ensure the individual I selected would be focused,
committed & determined to get me where I need to be. I selected
JoJo as my trainer because she focuses completely on her clients. Her
attention to detail to ensure her clients are doing all the specific moves
& weight training correctly -- is very important to me. Also, her
approach is very refreshing. She
definitely maximizes the time you
spend with her to ensure you are
getting the most from your sessions.
I have seen tremendous
improvement in my overall health
& strength training. I look forward
to my sessions with her & hope to
continue them in the future.
TRX SUSPENSION TRAINING ®
Designed by former Navy SEALs, the total-body resistance exercise also known
as the TRX Suspension Training uses heavy duty nylon webbing with adjustable
straps that allow users to employ their own body weight as resistance. This style of
strength training works for everyone, from elite athletes to elderly grandparents,
with only the intensity scaled up or down to suit individual fitness levels.
Group Fitness
Suspension Training builds strength, balance, flexibility and core stability with
hundreds of functional exercises that can easily adjust to all fitness levels.
Proponents say the techniques yield a better workout because they do more than
simply work a few major muscles. Instead, they demand the use of many muscles
to stabilize the entire body. The Suspension Training System activates more muscle
fibers because it recruits the entire nervous system.
TRX is an intense full body workout designed to accommodate a variety of fitness
levels at once.
TRX Press is for those in a time crunch or those who don’t feel they’re ready for a
full hour TRX class. You will get an amazing total body workout in just 30 minutes!
Outdoor TRX is a version of TRX that features bootcamp style training in addition
to traditional TRX workout methods.
Youth TRX is geared towards teenagers that are looking to train for sports, keep
active, stay in shape, or get in shape. For ages 12-18, all classes are taught by
Certified Personal Trainers. Sessions focus on balance and core work, plyometrics,
sprints, resistance training, and much more!
HAC offers more than 25 TRX classes each week. Visit
www.hachealthclub.com for a complete HAC TRX Schedule.
Ready to try it? Space is limited and classes fill quickly, so please see a Personal
Trainer, the Front Desk, or Rachael Ling to reserve your spot! Questions can be
At HAC, I continued swimming but added yoga (vinyasa)
usually twice a week mostly with Debbie Galla as something
I could do with my wife. I didn't think I'd like yoga but started
to see results in just a couple weeks. I now advocate yoga to
all my friends. Last year I added personal training with Jo-Jo
Riccardi-Goldfarb I am very pleased with the improvement
I've seen. Jo-Jo and Debbie Galla not only instructed me in the
proper techniques but provided encouragement when needed.
My strength, flexibility, balance, and body awareness continues
to improve and no more problems with my feet, elbow, and lower back. My body
weight is down 10%. My pant size decreased over three
inches. Also, I have seen marked improvement of a
shoulder blade issue that has nagged me since high
school. I'm back to playing tennis everyday if I want. I've
met the most wonderful people at yoga, during training, a
and at the pool. Thank you for providing such a clean
and safe facility with friendly, approachable staff
Jo-Jo
body, mind, and emotions. A physically
Classes are on a drop-in basis with prepayment
required.
YB - Yoga Bootcamp – This class
on toning and strengthening from the Core
and mindfully moving from that awareness.
You will experience uplifting music, sound
therapeutic alignment principles, and
receive heart-felt inspiration. Classes are on
a drop-in basis with pre-payment required.
SS- Stationary Sequence - A full body
sequence of postures for beginners to
members. I look forward to coming to HAC several times
a week.
BNB - Brand New Beginner Course -
Teaches fundamental principles that work
quickly to improve your posture, alleviate
pain, and focus your mind. This eight
of our Stationary Sequence (SS) class. A
great course for beginner and intermediate
yoga students looking to introduce or
deepen understanding of the yoga process.
Don’t go out without
your water bottle
I
n the summer, many of us don’t
head outdoors without our
sunscreen. In the winter, we always
take gloves and a warm scarf.
But what about water? About 60 percent
of our bodies are made up of H2O,
which performs such essential tasks as
cushioning our joints, flushing waste,
and transporting protein, amino acids,
carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and
oxygen to cells.
Keeping hydrated is especially important
in warmer months but should be a yearround
goal. In fact, the average person has
2.6 million sweat glands, which is why
we are soaked with perspiration after a
rigorous workout.
But you shouldn’t wait until after your
workout to drink water. In fact, you
should drink before you feel thirsty
because exercise blunts the mechanism
that conveys thirst to our brains. And if
you sweat profusely, consider a sports
drink that will replenish the electrolytes
you lost through perspiration.
Most folks don’t need sports drinks to stay
hydrated. Water will do the trick. And you
don’t have to buy expensive bottled water.
Carry a reusable water bottle with you on
your walk or take it to the fitness center.
We have all heard that we should drink
eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day. But
calculating how much water we need
is an inexact science because we also
get water from foods, such as fruits
and vegetables.
The Institute of Medicine says men
should drink about 3.0 liters (about 13
cups) of water a day. The recommendation
for women is 2.2 liters (about
nine cups) a day. Also keep in mind
that some fluids can contribute to
dehydration, including alcohol and
drinks that contain caffeine, like coffee
and tea.
Substituting water for soda will yield
healthy dividends all year ‘round.
Consider that drinking water three
times a week instead of a sugary
beverage will eliminate 6,084 grams of
sugar from your diet over the course
of one year, according to the American
Journal of Public Health. That’s 24,336
calories!
So, how can you tell if you are drinking
enough water? The color of your
urine will tell you. If you are properly
hydrated, it will be clear or light in
color. Dark yellow or amber urine is a
sign of dehydration.
