Strengths and Unique Selling Points: The Swan Valley is recognised as WA’s oldest wine producing region and is one of the most popular day trip destinations in Western Australia. Located within 25 minutes drive from Perth, the region offers a range of good quality products and experiences, including wineries, breweries, golf courses and art galleries. Underpinning the tourism product in the region is the rural landscape which is characterised predominantly by areas under vine for both wine and table grape growing. The equine industry is developing strongly in this region and this, together with the horticultural activities, add to the picturesque setting which is a key driver of visitation to the region. The Swan Valley is well connected with walk, cycle, road and river access. Local towns of note within the Swan Valley include Guildford and Midland. Guildford offers enormous heritage value with walking trails and a heritage precinct, which includes a jail and courthouse. Midland also has its own story and heritage and is known for its railway workshops and heritage buildings. Midland is a bustling regional centre, predominantly servicing the area east of Perth with a growing population and industrial/commercial base. One of the most popular attractions within the area is the Mundaring Weir. The Weir is an attraction which has received international recognition for its architecture and is a popular daytrip destination. The Weir supplies water to the Goldfields and agricultural areas and is also the start of the Golden Pipeline Heritage Trail, which takes motorists from Perth to Kalgoorlie following the path of the pipeline. The Perth Hills National Park Centre is also a major educational tourism attraction located near Mundaring Weir. This centre is operated by Department of Environment and Conservation and incorporates education programs, a popular camping ground, a visitor centre and a retail shop. Local towns of note within the Perth Hills (including Armadale, Kalamunda and Mundaring) are known for their history, crafts, markets, railway heritage and nature based offering (inclusive of the popular Araluen Botanic Gardens). Also included in the region is the Chittering Valley, an area north east of Perth popular for its fresh produce, wineries and drive routes. The Perth Hills area is known for its national and regional parks containing waterfalls, water catchments, flora and fauna as well as its nature trails such as the Bibbulmun Track, Kep Track and Munda Biddi Trail. Over half of the Perth Hills area is in the State reserve system, including John Forrest National Park, one of Australia’s oldest conservation areas and Western Australia’s first National Park. Lookouts and trails are found throughout the region, and camping facilities, shelters, and day use picnic areas are also offered.
