<strong>Cultural</strong> visitors are defined as those who attended a theatre<br />
performance, a concert or other performing arts, a cultural<br />
festival, fair or event; or an Aboriginal performance and/or<br />
visited a museum, art gallery, art or craft workshop, an<br />
Aboriginal site or community; or a history or heritage site<br />
while on their trip to Australia.<br />

International Visitation<br />
2.7 million international overnight cultural tourism visitors<br />
travelled to Australia in the <strong>year</strong> <strong>ending</strong> <strong>June</strong> 2012, accounting<br />
for 126.2 million nights. Of these visitors, 39% visited <strong>Victoria</strong><br />
during this period.<br />
1.1 million international overnight cultural tourism visitors to<br />
Australia travelled to <strong>Victoria</strong> on their trip in the <strong>year</strong> <strong>ending</strong><br />
<strong>June</strong> 2012, accounting for 28.4 million nights. <strong>Cultural</strong> tourism<br />
visitors represent 60% of all international overnight visitors to<br />
the State.<br />
The average length of stay for international overnight cultural<br />
tourism visitors in Australia was 46.1 nights, compared to an<br />
average length of stay of 26.7 nights for international overnight<br />
cultural tourism visitors in <strong>Victoria</strong>.<br />

In the period <strong>year</strong> <strong>ending</strong> <strong>June</strong> 2012, there was an increase in<br />
international visitor nights to <strong>Victoria</strong> (+6.5%) and Australia<br />
(+5.8%) from international cultural tourism visitors compared to<br />
the previous <strong>year</strong>. The average annual growth rate since 2008<br />
was 6.4% for international visitor nights to <strong>Victoria</strong> (compared<br />
to a 3.8% for international visitors to Australia for the same<br />
period) from this segment.<br />
<strong>Victoria</strong>’s share of international cultural tourism visitors to<br />
Australia has increased by 4.3 percentage points since 2008 to<br />
38.7% in 2012.<br />
Domestic Overnight Visitation<br />
Australia received almost 11.6 million domestic overnight cultural<br />
visitors for the <strong>year</strong> <strong>ending</strong> <strong>June</strong> 2012, accounting for<br />
approximately 59.8 million domestic visitor nights. The average<br />
length of stay was 5.2 nights.<br />
During the same period <strong>Victoria</strong> received more than 2.9 million<br />
domestic overnight cultural visitors, accounting for an estimated<br />
10.1 million visitor nights. The average length of stay for<br />
domestic overnight cultural visitors to <strong>Victoria</strong> was 3.5 nights.<br />

Compared to the previous <strong>year</strong>, <strong>Victoria</strong> experienced an<br />
increase in domestic overnight cultural visitors (+2.4%) and<br />
visitor nights (+0.6%). Australia saw a larger increase in domestic<br />
overnight cultural visitors (+9.6%) and visitor nights (+7.9%)<br />
over this period.<br />
There was an increase in international cultural tourism visitors<br />
who visited <strong>Victoria</strong> (+2.4%) and Australia (+1.9%) in <strong>June</strong> 2012<br />
compared to the previous <strong>year</strong>. Since 2008, there was an<br />

Since <strong>year</strong> <strong>ending</strong> <strong>June</strong> 2008, there has been an average annual<br />
increase of 3.6% for domestic overnight cultural visitors to<br />
<strong>Victoria</strong> (compared to an increase of 3.4% per annum for<br />
Australia) and an increase of 3.0% per annum for visitor nights<br />
spent by these visitors in the State (compared to a slight<br />
increase of 0.7% per annum for Australia).<br />
<strong>Victoria</strong>’s share of domestic overnight cultural visitors increased<br />
marginally (+0.1 percentage points) since <strong>year</strong> <strong>ending</strong> <strong>June</strong> 2008,<br />
to 25.1% in <strong>year</strong> <strong>ending</strong> <strong>June</strong> 2012. Over this period the market<br />
share of the nights spent by this segment in <strong>Victoria</strong> increased by<br />
1.5 percentage points to 16.8%.<br />
Domestic Daytrip Visitation<br />
There were 11.9 million daytrips undertaken by domestic<br />
cultural visitors in Australia for the <strong>year</strong> <strong>ending</strong> <strong>June</strong> 2012. The<br />
cultural segment had a 7.1% market share of all domestic<br />
daytrips in Australia.<br />
In <strong>Victoria</strong>, there were 3.6 million daytrips undertaken by<br />
domestic cultural visitors, with the segment accounting for 8.2%<br />
of all domestic daytrips to and within <strong>Victoria</strong>.<br />
Domestic cultural daytrips to and within <strong>Victoria</strong> increased by<br />
6.8% from <strong>year</strong> <strong>ending</strong> <strong>June</strong> 2011 to <strong>year</strong> <strong>ending</strong> <strong>June</strong> 2012.<br />

The analysis following examines those who are overnight<br />
Aboriginal tourism visitors who participated in that activity<br />
while on their trip to Australia and also visited <strong>Victoria</strong> on that<br />
trip. Trip activity data is not specific to state or territory<br />
participated in for the International Visitors Survey in 2012.<br />

The largest single source market of international overnight<br />
cultural tourism visitors to Australia who visited <strong>Victoria</strong> was<br />
China with 17% or an estimated 178,600 visitors in the <strong>year</strong><br />
<strong>ending</strong> <strong>June</strong> 2012. Other significant markets include Other Asia<br />
(excluding Japan, China and India) with 22% or an estimated<br />

232,400 visitors in <strong>year</strong> <strong>ending</strong> <strong>June</strong> 2012, Europe (est.<br />
184,100) and the United Kingdom (est. 128,700).<br />

overnight cultural visitors most commonly originated from the<br />
New South Wales market, accounting for 43% of all interstate<br />

visitors coming from Queensland and 14% from South<br />
