Abstract:
EPRI has developed a Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) method under Power
Delivery Reliability Initiative, which has been successfully implemented by various
energy companies in planning studies of growing complexity. Unlike the traditional
deterministic contingency analysis, PRA combines a probabilistic measure of the
likelihood of undesirable events with a measure of the consequence of the events
(that is, the impact) into a single index – Probabilistic Risk Index (PRI). EPRI internally
developed the PRA program that uses contingency analysis results as well as the
transmission facility outage information as input to compute and graphically display
the risk indices. Kansas City Power & Light (KCP&L), Tri-‐State Generation and
Transmission Association (TRI-‐STATE), and New York Power Authority (NYPA) have
adopted PRA method and utilized PRA program to assess their transmission systems.
These research studies have demonstrated that the PRA method significantly
improves the ability of conducting effective transmission operational planning,
long-‐term transmission expansion planning, and transmission project prioritization.
Biography of the speaker:
Pei Zhang is the Director leading smart grid activities at Accenture. He was the
Program Manager responsible for Grid Operation and Planning areas at Electric
Power Research Institute (EPRI). Before joining EPRI, he worked at National Grid
Company in United Kingdom (UK). He received his Ph. D. degree from Imperial
College of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of London, U.K. His current

esearch interests include power system stability and control, reliability and security
assessment, and application of probabilistic methods to power systems.
