Axle Shafts<br />

The following procedures assume the rear axle assembly<br />

has been removed from the machine (see Rear Axle<br />

Assembly Removal in this section).<br />

Axle Shaft Removal<br />

1. Remove the axle cover mounting screws. Remove<br />

the axle cover from the axle case as an assembly<br />

(Fig. 27).<br />

2. Use a bearing puller to remove the bearing and bevel<br />

gear as shown (Fig. 28).<br />

3. Remove the shims, spacer and retaining ring. Drive<br />

the axle out of the bearing and cover. Remove and discard<br />

the axle shaft seal.<br />

4. Inspect all gears, shafts, bearings, spacers and<br />

cases for damage and wear. Replace components as<br />

necessary.<br />

1. Coat new axle shaft seal with grease and install in<br />

axle cover as shown (Fig. 29).<br />

2. Press the axle cover and bearing assembly onto the<br />

axle shaft. Press only on the inner race of the cover<br />

bearing (Fig. 29).<br />

3. Install retaining ring, spacer and correct combination<br />

of bearing shims. Install bevel gear and bearing.<br />

4. Coat a new O-ring with grease and install the axle<br />

cover assembly. Tighten axle cover screws from 17 to<br />

20 ft-lb (23 to 27 N -m).<br />
