COLLEGE OF BUSINESS 2008-2009 HIGHLIGHTS Faculty Research • The COB faculty had a very productive year with 91articles and other creative works published, 70 works in process, 43 presentations made at regional or national meetings, and 55 faculty extension and outreach activities related to field of expertise. • Dr. Ismet Anitsal had seven refereed publications and has nine working papers in progress. He and Dr. Meral Anitsal were the recipients of four research grants. • Dr. Meral Anitsal had six refereed publications. She also has eleven working papers in progress. • Dr. Deborah Ballou and Dr. Brian Huguenard published a paper in the Journal of Information Systems Education. • Dr. Deborah Ballou and Dr. Brian Huguenard published in the 2008 ACM SIGMIS Computer Personnel Research Conference Proceedings. • Dr. Bonita Barger published papers in the Journal of International Business and Cultural Studies, the Academy of Educational Leadership Journal, and the International College Teaching Methods and Styles Journal. She also received the Distinguished Research Award for a paper published in the Allied Academies Spring 2009. • Dr. Ferdinand DiFurio had one refereed journal publication and made two paper presentations at academic and professional meetings. • Dr. Melanie Earles published two articles in Journal of Accountancy. • Drs. Melanie Earles and Deryl Martin published an article in Valuation Strategies. • Drs. Robert Elmore, Ismet Anitisal, and Meral Anitisal published an article in the Proceedings of the Academy of Students preparing to leave for Nashville Career Fair Educational Leadership, Allied Academies International Conference. • Drs. Robert Elmore, Ismet Anitisal, and Virginia Moore were published in the Conference Proceedings, International Academy of Business and Public Administrative Disciplines Conference. • Drs. R. Dan Fesler and Richard Rand published an article in Today’s CPA. • Drs. R. Dan Fesler and Richard Rand, along with student Brittany Stringfield, were published in 2008 Proceedings of the Southeast Regional Meeting of the American Accounting Association. • Drs. Dan Fesler and Beth Howard had an article published in Journal of Accountancy. • Dr. Dan Fesler authored several Tax Columns for Upper Cumberland Newspapers. • Drs. Tor Guimaraes, Curtis Armstrong, and Brian Jones published a paper in Quality Management Journal. • Dr. Tor Guimaraes published papers in International Journal of the Academic Business World and International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance. • Dr. Jon Jonakin had one refereed journal publication and presented a paper at the Latin American Studies Association in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, June 2009. • Dr. Deryl Martin had one refereed journal publication, and he presented a paper at the Southwestern Finance Association meeting in Houston. He was also a session chair for the Southwestern Finance Association. • Dr. Nat Natarajan’s paper “Six Sigma in Services – Challenges and Opportunities” (with Jason Morse) will be published in International Journal of Productivity and Quality Management. Dr. Nat Natarajan also published a paper in the International Journal of Productivity and Quality Management. • Dr. Mary Pashley has one working paper in progress. • Dr. Julie Pharr had one paper included in the proceedings of a professional meeting. She also presented two papers. One was presented at the 20th Anniversary of the Oxford Roundtable, Queen’s College, Oxford University, U.K. • Dr. Magdalena Rappl had two refereed journal publications and presented three papers at professional meetings. She had three papers included in the 18 Annual Report 2008-2009
proceedings of professional meetings. • Drs. Rodley Pineda, Bonita Barger, and Linda Lerner published in the Journal of International Business and Cultural Studies. • Dr. Rodley Pineda published a paper in the Journal of Education for Business. • Dr. Richard Rand had an article in the Journal of Business Issues. • Dr. Curt Reimann and Dr. Nat Natarajan conducted a workshop on Quality and Productivity Sciences and Innovation at the 39th National Annual Meeting of the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI) in Baltimore, MD, November 2009. In the same conference, Dr. Nat Natarajan’s paper “Airlines in India: A Strategic Analysis,” (with V. Sridevi) was awarded the best paper in the International Business track and was published in the conference Proceedings. • Dr. G.A. Swanson has been published in International Journal of Information Technologies, the China Business and Market (Invited lead article in China’s most widely circulated journal for advancing thought in business and the markets. The article is published in Chinese.) and Proceedings of the 19th European meeting on Cybernetics and Systems Research. In addition, he presented numerous papers at the 14th Annual Working Conference of the Center for Philosophy, Technology and Social Systems. • Dr. Tom Timmerman published a paper in the Journal of Education for Business • Dr. Kenneth Wiant had one refereed journal publication and two proceedings. Books published • Dr. Melanie Earles had the “Ruling & Cases (chapter in 2008 National Income Tax Workbook, published by Land Grant University Tax Education Foundation. • Dr. Nat Natarajan’s paper “Transfers of Business And Information Management Systems: Issues and Challenges,” will be published as a chapter in the Handbook on Business Information Management Systems. • Dr. G.A. Swanson published Some Insights into Material Flow Science and Technology from Living Systems Theory, Frontiers of Enterprise Integration (Taylor & Francis Group, London). Window on World entrance gate Innovation resulting in savings, efficiency, and/ or improved outcomes • Beta Alpha Psi co-sponsored the accounting department’s 2008 Meet the Firms event which had 37 organizations in attendance to meet accounting students and to schedule on-campus and off-campus interviews. Beta Alpha Psi also earned “superior” status for the 11th year in a row. • The Department of Decision Science and Management implemented a revised MIS curriculum in Fall. • Ticket to Ride had record attendance and participation this year. In its fourth year and under the direction of Amy Jo Carpenter, Ticket to Ride is a series of workshops and seminars designed to prepare business students for the Nashville College to Career Fair, held each February at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds. Faculty, staff, and student awards • Dr. Bonita Barger received a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) grant. • Dr. Ferdinand DiFurio was the recipient of two research grants, one of which was a life-cycle analysis project with the U. S. Department of Energy with Drs. Steven Isbell and Ken Wiant. • Dr. Dan Fesler was appointed President of the Upper Cumberland Chapter of the TSCPA at the chapter’s May 2009 meeting. In addition, Dr. Fesler has been appointed to the TSCPA (statewide) Board of Directors. • Dr. Tom Timmerman received a QEP Grant. • The College of Business was featured in The Princeton Review’s 2009 edition of Best 296 Business Schools. • The BusinessMedia Center helped to establish the Alex Cassidy Memorial Internship through the College of Business Board Trustees.
