Mati Kranz Receives High Honor<br />

TAU’s representative in Germany for<br />

almost 30 years, Dr. Mati Kranz, was<br />

honored with the Ehrenplakette der<br />

Stadt Frankfurt (Badge of Honor of<br />

the City of Frankfurt). Lord Mayor of<br />

Frankfurt Dr. h.c. Petra Roth, a TAU<br />

honorary doctor, bestowed the medal<br />

on Dr. Kranz for his important contribution<br />

to German-Jewish reconciliation<br />

<strong>and</strong> German-Israeli academic<br />

<strong>and</strong> cultural cooperation. Dr. Kranz<br />

was cited for promoting the partnership<br />

between Tel Aviv University <strong>and</strong><br />

Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University<br />

in Frankfurt, <strong>and</strong> for his personal<br />

achievement in the establishment of<br />

the Marcel Reich-Ranicki Chair in<br />

German Literature at TAU, which<br />

aims to expose young Israelis to the<br />

German literary tradition.<br />

“Thanks to his inventiveness, negotiating<br />

skills <strong>and</strong> enormous commitment,<br />

Dr. Matityahu Kranz has shaped the<br />

cultural relations between the partner<br />

cities Tel Aviv <strong>and</strong> Frankfurt for many<br />

years,” Mayor Roth read out from the<br />

certificate.<br />

- Frankfurt: Following the award ceremony<br />

for Dr. Mati Kranz, Dr. h.c.<br />

Petra Roth hosted a charity event at<br />

Frankfurt City Hall. Entertainment<br />

was provided by actor <strong>and</strong> producer<br />

Klaus Maria Br<strong>and</strong>auer <strong>and</strong> the piano<br />

duo Grau <strong>and</strong> Schumacher.<br />

- Frankfurt: The Board of Directors<br />

of the Helaba-L<strong>and</strong>esbank Hessen-<br />

Thüringen held a dinner with the participation<br />

of Klaus Maria Br<strong>and</strong>auer.<br />

Johann Berger, Vice Chairman of the<br />

Board of Directors, welcomed the audience.<br />

Dr. Arie Dorenbaum (pictured) has been appointed President of<br />

the Mexican Friends of Tel Aviv University. Dr. Dorenbaum studied<br />

at TAU’s Sackler School of Medicine <strong>and</strong> is a specialist in plastic<br />

surgery. During the time he lived in Israel he served as a<br />

doctor in the Golani Brigade of the Israel Defense Forces.<br />

He also worked at Tel Hashomer Hospital <strong>and</strong> the Edith<br />

Wolfson Hospital.<br />

Ambassador to the US, Prof. Itamar<br />

Rabinovich, gave a lecture on “Israel,<br />

War?” at an evening organized by<br />

Hanover Leadership Regroups<br />

After the passing of Prof. Dr. Marek<br />

Fischel, TAU Governor <strong>and</strong> member<br />

of the executive committee of the<br />

German Friends Association, the local<br />

committee of the German Friends in<br />

Hanover announced the reappointment<br />

of Dr. Hebert Schmalstieg,<br />

former Lord Mayor of Hanover, as<br />

chairman of the committee, <strong>and</strong> of Dr.<br />

Joachim Pieper <strong>and</strong> Dietmar Alhoff as<br />

Vice Chairmen.<br />

the Swedish Friends<br />

Prof. Peter Seideman (pictured)<br />

has been appointed<br />

Head of the Swedish<br />

Friends Association. Born<br />

in Stockholm, Seideman holds a BA in<br />

Psychology, an MD <strong>and</strong> a PhD. He is<br />

a specialist in rheumatology <strong>and</strong> is the<br />

Head of the Division of Rheumatology<br />

at Sabbatsberg Hospital, Chairman<br />

of the EyeCenter Stockholm <strong>and</strong><br />

Chairman of the Medisob real estate<br />

company.
