Punta 2010<br />
More than 1,800 people attended<br />
the traditional annual conference in<br />
Punta del Este, Uruguay, organized<br />
by the Argentinean Friends with the<br />
participation of the Brazilian <strong>and</strong><br />
Uruguayan Friends of TAU. The<br />
meeting began with a celebratory<br />
event marking the 100th anniversary<br />
of the city of Tel Aviv. A video<br />
especially prepared for the occasion<br />
by the Argentinean Friends, which<br />
included a message from Member of<br />
Knesset Rabbi Michael Melchior, was<br />
screened.<br />
Among the panelists at the conference,<br />
entitled “Reflections on Our<br />
Time: Certainties <strong>and</strong> Uncertainties<br />
in a Changing World,” were Dr.<br />
Marcos Aguinis, writer, psychoanalyst<br />
Rabbi Bergman (left) <strong>and</strong> Dr. Marcos Aguinis<br />
<strong>and</strong> TAU honorary doctor; <strong>and</strong> Rabbi<br />
Sergio Bergman, a leading Jewish<br />
community figure in Argentina.<br />
During the conference a special tribute<br />
was paid to two TAU governors,<br />
Miriam Smolarz <strong>and</strong> Elba Cuenca.<br />

Montreal<br />
New President for Montreal Chapter<br />
Theodore (Teddy) Goloff (pictured) has been appointed President<br />
of the Montreal <strong>and</strong> Eastern Region, replacing the Hon. Herbert<br />
Marx. Goloff is a highly respected labor lawyer with the Montreal<br />
law firm Sheppard Shapiro <strong>and</strong> is the senior member of the Labor<br />
<strong>and</strong> Employment Law Group. He <strong>and</strong> his wife, Donna, became<br />
involved with CFTAU when their daughter, Naomi, attended the Sackler School of<br />
Medicine. Goloff is past president of the Lord Reading Society <strong>and</strong> is a former board<br />
member of Congregation Shaare Zedek. Born <strong>and</strong> raised in Montreal, he is a graduate<br />
of the McGill Faculty of Law <strong>and</strong> was the Chief Justice Greenshield’s Scholar.<br />
Guests at an operatic evening<br />
Merle <strong>and</strong> Bernard Stotl<strong>and</strong> hosted an operatic evening<br />
at their home for leading Montreal philanthropists, who<br />
were entertained by TAU graduate Guy Mannheim<br />
<strong>and</strong> Ms. Sharon Azrieli.<br />
Canadian Friends Sponsor Leading Faculty<br />
- Prof. Illana Gozes of TAU’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Director of the Adams<br />
Super-Center for <strong>Brain</strong> Studies <strong>and</strong> incumbent of the Lily <strong>and</strong> Avraham Gildor<br />
Chair for the Investigation of Growth Factors, was hosted to brunch by Grace<br />
Alter <strong>and</strong> Rosa Fineston. The event was in support of the establishment of a<br />
Montreal Friendship Circle for Alzheimer’s Disease Research.<br />
- Margaret <strong>and</strong> Sylvan Adams opened up their home for a Middle East briefing<br />
by Prof. Asher Susser, former Director of the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle<br />
Eastern <strong>and</strong> African Studies. Prof. Susser also visited Ottawa at the invitation<br />
of Sara Vered. In cooperation with the Ottawa JCC <strong>and</strong> the Vered Cultural<br />
Program, Prof. Susser addressed over 100 members of the Jewish community,<br />
met with Ottawa leaders <strong>and</strong> spoke at Ottawa University to a full audience which<br />
included Hillel youth.<br />
Presidential Visit<br />
TAU President Prof. Joseph Klafter was<br />
welcomed by the Canadian Friends at<br />
a brunch hosted by Eva <strong>and</strong> Herbert<br />
Marx. He later attended the annual<br />
General Meeting of the Montreal<br />
Chapter of the Canadian Friends.<br />
Young Members Welcome TAU Faculty<br />
“Next”– young members of the Argentinean Friends of<br />
Tel Aviv University – hosted Prof. Ranaan Rein, former<br />
TAU Vice Rector <strong>and</strong> Director of the S. Daniel Abraham<br />
Center for International <strong>and</strong> Regional Studies, <strong>and</strong> Dr.<br />
Marcelo Ehrlich of TAU’s Department of Cell Research <strong>and</strong><br />
Immunology, George S. Wise Faculty of Life Sciences.<br />

A cultural evening that coincided with<br />
the late TAU Vice President Yehiel<br />
Ben-Zvi’s visit to Melbourne was hosted<br />
by Miriam <strong>and</strong> Ted Berman at their<br />
home. The guest speakers were the<br />
Hon. Rod Kemp, former Australian<br />
Minister for Arts <strong>and</strong> Sport, <strong>and</strong><br />
Danielle Kemp, a journalist <strong>and</strong> broadcaster<br />
with Melbourne’s leading ethnic<br />
radio station <strong>and</strong> Executive Producer<br />
of their French Language Program.<br />
