the Code of Conduct or wish to make an appeal, please contact Alana Hefner, Director of Career Services at
EVENT DESCRIPTIONS
Mock Interviews
Contact Career Services for a 30-minute interview
session and receive constructive feedback to build your
confidence and polish your skills. This is a great avenue
for making connections with a professional interviewer in
your field of study. Don’t forget to bring your résumé and
dress professionally.
Business Etiquette Dinners
Be prepared for that lunch or dinner interview with confidence.
Employers want to see you in social situations to see how you
conduct yourself, particularly if the job you desire requires a certain
standard of conduct with clients and superiors. On a practical level,
interviews that last for several hours extend through mealtimes,
and the employer is gracious to host you for breakfast, lunch and/
or dinner. The meal is a time to visit and interact, and this is always
more important than the function of eating. Spend a delightful
evening of fun mixed with learning as you hone your social skills at
the “mocktail” gathering before sitting down to a four-course meal.
Résumé Clinics
Does your résumé need “healing”? If you have a résumé
already prepared and you feel as though it needs a bit of
work, drop by Career Services for résumé resuscitation. Watch
your email for announcements about clinic dates and times. If
you cannot attend a résumé clinic, stop by our office to sign
up for an appointment with one of our staff members.
Workshops
Throughout the year Career Services will offer several
opportunities to attend career workshops, with topics
ranging from navigating Hire A Texan to professional dress
and more. Check out the dates for these clinics and be sure
to attend.
Is the Résumé DEAD?
Not entirely, but it is certainly changing. A traditional résumé is still a staple for most job applicants, and expected by
most companies. BUT, companies often look for more than just a résumé . One New York venture capital firm no longer
accepts résumés, but instead wants to see applicants’ “web presence” – things like a blog, twitter feed and video
résumé. Most companies still DO want to see a résumé but are also using the Internet to look at Facebook pages, mining
through LinkedIn for job candidates, looking at your blogs, twitter feeds, e-portfolios, etc. A professional online presence
is no longer something you might want to consider – it is something you SHOULD have!
here are a few easy, frEE tools to get you started:
vidEo résUMés
Get “in front” of the employer before you are physically in front of her/him.
• Tell an employer your strengths
• Show your personality
• Send a link to your VR in an email
• Post the link on your LinkedIn page, include in your e-portfolio, etc.
This technology is FREE to you thanks to a partnership with
E-porTfolios
SHOW your experience with a webpage
showcasing your talents. Include a professional
photo, and any information that promotes you.
• Photos of projects, volunteer work, etc.
• Links to writing samples
• Feedback from coworkers, employers, and/
or those who have benefited from your work
• Journaling / blog
• Your résumé and references
• Other samples of your work
soCial nETWorKs
You probably know how to use this.
At least for catching up with friends, sharing photos,
and maybe “checking up” on people of interest?
guess what? Employers
use it to “check up” on people, too!
Take down questionable photos and
comments, and keep the content clean!
do you know how to use this?
Linkedin.com: Think of it like Facebook for professionals. Post a professional photo,
educational information, and experience (very much like an online résumé !)
RéSuMé OvERvIEW & TIPS
sTrong aCTion Words for ThE résUMé
The first impression is a lasting one, and often the first impression of yourself to potential employers is your résumé.
You don’t have a second chance to make a first impression!
Your résumé is a summary of skills and experiences related to the position you are seeking. It is NOT a summary of ALL
skills and experiences. We’ve provided tips to get you started:
ChoosE a sTYlE
The Chronological résumé (p.18) presents
your education and work experience in a straightforward,
REVERSE chronological order. It is effective if your work is
relevant to your objective.
The functional résumé (p.19) concentrates
on your qualifications that relate to the skills necessary to
perform the desired job. This style is effective if your work
experience is NOT closely related to your objective.
The Combination résumé (p.20) uses
both previous styles. The skills or qualifications section
identifies your skills in relation to your job or career
objective. This format grabs the reader’s attention early.
idEnTifY YoUr
rElEvanT ExpEriEnCE
Remember to include skills and experiences that you
developed in a variety of ways; don’t just focus on work
experience alone. Types of experience to consider include:
• Work
• Internships –paid or unpaid
• Class assignments
• Group projects
• Volunteer work
• Campus organizations
• Job Shadow
noTe
We’ve included major-specific résumé
examples on the following pages, but don’t
feel like your format should be limited to the
résumé-style we chose. Make your résumé
the best representation of you possible.
sEll YoUrsElf
• Insert bullets
• Resist the urge to list your job duties. Instead, use
strong action words (p.17) to describe your skills set
• Use the correct tense
• Rank order the information by importance to objective
• Showcase your accomplishments, skills, and abilities
• Keep your descriptions specific and concise
• Emphasize leadership, problem-solving, organization,
communication, ingenuity, teamwork, and promotions
• Use numbers, percentages and details
paY aTTEnTion To forMaT
• Be consistent
• Centered or left-handed headings for any of
the formats
• Capitalization, underlining, boldface,
and/or indentation
• Balance the material on the page
• Familiarize yourself with the standards and practices for
your industry and employer
• Research to find out whether the industry expectations
are a one-page résumé, or a longer résumé
finaliZE
• Double check for spelling, typographical, and
grammatical errors and have another person check your
résumé; don’t rely solely on a computer “spell-check”
program
• Use 20# bond paper, and purchase additional paper for
the cover letter
• White, off-white, cream, tan, and pale gray are
accepted colors for most areas
• Pastels are not recommended
• Creative fields such as advertising, graphic design or
performing arts have more leeway in using a variety of
colors and formats, while other fields require a standard,
The Chronological
résumé is best if you are staying in
the same field or have training/experience related to
the objective.
Tips
• The proper spelling is singular (Bachelor) as opposed
to plural (Bachelors).
• Use strong action words and details such as numbers
and percentages for communicating your skills as
opposed to listing your job duties.
• To maximize space, decrease margins to .5”.
• Use short descriptions and bulleted items so the
reader can easily scan.
• Keep your résumé relevant to the position you’re
applying for. Separate Related Experience and Other
Experience. Remember, your résumé might look
different for each position you apply for.
The functional
résumé focuses on your skills and
experience, rather than on your chronological work
history. It is typically used by job seekers who:
a.) don’t have a lot of work experience, but have
developed skills through participation in organizations,
volunteer work etc. b.) are changing careers c.) who
have gaps in their employment history.
Tips
• Add “Pursuing” before Bachelor if graduation date is
more than a calendar year away.
• List jobs in reverse chronological order.
• List all degrees in consistent format. Do not include
transfer schools if a degree was not granted.
• Be consistent with spacing, bolding and punctuation.
Use bullets for emphasis.
• Highlight relevant skills and list in order of importance
to support career objective.
• Courses should be listed in order of importance to
support career objective.
• Make certain the font style is the same throughout the
résumé. Font size can vary some, no greater than 12
and no smaller than 10.
WhaT is a Curriculum vitae?
The most noticeable difference between most CVs and most résumés is the length. Entry level résumés are usually limited to a
page. CVs, however, often run to three or more pages. (Remember, however, that length is not the determinant of a successful
CV. You should try to present all the relevant information that you possibly can, but you should also try to present it in as concise
a manner as possible.) A more subtle but equally important distinction is that the goal of a résumé is to construct a professional
identity, and the goal of a CV is specifically to construct a scholarly identity. Thus, your CV will need to reflect very specifically your
abilities as a teacher, researcher, and publishing scholar within your discipline. Categories to consider might include: Teaching,
Research, Publications, Technical/Specialized Skills, Grants, Consulting, etc.
on your résumé. Indicate what you can do for the organization. Do not inquire about what
the organization can offer you.
practice interview Questions
Tell me something about yourself.
This is a frequent opening question usually for an “ice
breaker”. It provides you the opportunity to sell yourself and
to prove to the employer that you have what he/she needs.
Take no more than 1-2 minutes to offer a concise, wellorganized
presentation of yourself. Keep it relevant to the job.
Which of the qualities that you possess makes
you feel that you would be successful at this job?
If you did your research, it will be easier for you to focus on
the qualifications that they are looking for. Pay particular
attention to areas in which your strength relates either
directly or indirectly to the position.
What interests you about our company and why
do you want to work for us?
Again, your research is essential! Find out what products
they offer and what services they render. Your answer should
reflect your career goals as they relate to the goals of the
company. Attempt to show why this particular company, and
not any other, is important to you. You should convey that
you are looking for a particular job and not just “any job.”
What would you like to be doing five years from
now?
Tell the interviewer that you hope to be with the company in
whatever capacity you can make the greatest contribution,
based on the skills and experiences you’ve gained over the
course of the preceding years.
Do you prefer working alone or with others?
The employer is really looking for a sign that you are
confident and able enough to work without supervision. Let
him/her know that while you enjoy the freedom of working
alone, you also enjoy the team spirit of working with others.
What activities did you engage in while at school?
Employers are interested in persons with varied interests.
Having no outside interests indicates that you are either dull,
or that you need all spare time to get by in your studies.
What is your major strength/weakness?
Your major strength should be easy, but be sure it is
directly related to the position. As for your major weakness,
again, put a positive spin on it. For instance, “I tend to
be nervous around my supervisors, although I’ve gained
more confidence in that area since my last job where my
supervisors encouraged me to ask questions.”
Describe your best/worst boss.
Be positive. Speak about your best boss if possible. If
pressed to speak about your worst boss, try to put a
positive spin on it. For example, “I had a supervisor who
was often vague. However, because of this, I learned the
value of good communication.” Don’t name names!
sTrEss inTErviEW
QUEsTions are a test to see how you act
which contain high levels of stressful situations.
BEhavioral-BasEd
inTErviEWing (BBi) is one of
the fastest growing interviewing methods, based on the
premise that an applicant’s past behavior will predict how
he or she will respond to similar situations in the future.
Typically, recruiters ask general questions about previous
jobs or activities, future goals, grades, classes, etc. BBI
challenges you to recall (in detail) what you did, thought,
and felt in key situations as if you were reliving them. This
allows the recruiter to see the whole picture—your thought
process, decision making skills, and emotional state—
as well as the results of your actions. Take your time in
formulating a response. Be direct and thorough. Below are
some commonly asked behavior-based questions:
• What was the most complex assignment you have had?
What was your role?
• Provide an example of how you acquired a technical skill
and converted it into a practical application.
• Think of a situation where you distrusted a co-worker/
supervisor resulting in tension between you. What steps
did you take to improve the relationship?
• Tell me about a suggestion you made to improve a job
process. What was the result?
• Give me a specific example of a time when you did not
meet a deadline. How did you handle the subsequent
situation?
• Give me a specific example of a time when you sold
someone on an idea or concept.
• Describe a time when you had to make a decision that
was not popular with the group.
• Tell me about a time when you made a bad decision.
What would I like to be doing in five or ten years?
Do I enjoy this field so much that I can picture myself spending most of my time in it for years to come?
Am I willing to commit to the time, effort, and personal and financial resources that pursuing a graduate
