OUR
STAFF:
THE BEST THING
ABOUT CAMP
arrowhead
Counselors are role models, committed to balancing fun and
safety in a supportive environment. Many members of the
Arrowhead staff team were campers themselves. They are
teachers, paraprofessionals, and students with 70% returning
year to year. In addition to three reference checks, all staff
members are interviewed and complete a rigorous criminal
background check prior to being offered employment. Staff
complete at least 35 hours of pre-camp training including child
development, camper management, active games, and safety
procedures, including CPR and First Aid.
Center Director
Kara Travers Martin
Kara Travers Martin has been affiliated
with YMCA Camp Arrowhead since 1990
and is looking forward to 2013 as
another safe and memorable summer for
campers. Throughout the years, starting
as a teen camper, Kara has held a variety
of staff positions, and looks forward to
her third summer as the Center Director. Her goals for each
summer remain the same; a focus on programming, to provide
each camper with new and memorable experiences, and to have
each camper make a friend at Camp. The friendships and new
experiences that we provide for children at camp is vital to
growth and development and gives them memories that will last
a lifetime. Kara looks forward to working with Blake creating a
relationship with your camper and family this summer.
TEEN & LEADERSHIP
PROGRAMS
Arrowhead Leadership Training
Program (ALT)
Grades 7-9 as of September 2013
This program provides a service learning experience for teens.
Youth will learn the values of volunteerism, leadership, and
teamwork through a series of teambuilding games and experiences,
utilizing our ropes course for parts of this experience. Additionally
they will design and implement a service learning project at Camp
Arrowhead, Powder Mills Park, or the local Fish Hatchery.
Campers will have time during their three week session to help
with different areas of camp programming, such as Ropes and
Archery, under the guidance of the leadership staff. All participants
will enjoy day camp activities including recreational swim and
outdoor activities. This program serves as a transitional program
for many teens between Teen Trekkers and our Counselor-In-
Training program.
Counselor-In-Training Program (CIT)
Must be age 15 by the end of the summer, realizing
that we can only hire at age 16 for the following
summer.
The CIT program provides participants with training to become
Junior Counselors for the following summer. This four-week
program is designed to provide a structure and atmosphere that
allows participants to grow as individuals and as a community to
become the best camp counselors they can be!
The first week of the program is dedicated to leadership training
and learning all about Camp Arrowhead. The focus of the second
week is on safety, working with children, and child-development.
The third week is designed to focus on developing creative and
fun programs for campers and to allow participants to put these
newly learned skills into practice in program areas. The fourth
week of the program is an “internship week” where CITs will
put all of their knowledge and skills to the test by shadowing
in units. Finally, upon a successful completion of the program,
CITs will be asked to volunteer for the last two weeks of the
summer.
Participants will participate in swimming, specialty areas, and
various trainings at camp throughout the summer. This program
provides the perfect mix of experiential learning, leadership, and
fun for a memorable summer.
Archery
Sessions 3, 5, and 6 for campers entering
5th-8th Grade
This program will teach campers using a combination of time
proven techniques, positive reinforcement, and feedback to
kindle a lifetime of enthusiasm for the sport of Archery. Whether
you are new to the sport or an experienced Archer with your own
bow, this week-long camp taught by USA Archery trained staff
will challenge you to new levels. In addition to daily shooting
practice, instructors will cover advanced topics such as range
safety, equipment operation, maintenance, and repair. Archers
will also delve into more advanced shooting opportunities such
as field Archery and moving targets. The week will culminate in
the Camp Archery Tournament, where students can demonstrate
their skills in a supportive, friendly competition. In addition,
participants will enjoy a daily swim period as well as other
traditional camp activities.
