professional association dedicated to promoting excellence within the 

UK Hearing Care profession.

Help for Heroes. In conjunction with Phonak (hearing aid

Rebellion Roller Girls, a 

Roller Derby team were 

formed in 2009 by locals 

‘Inky’ ‘Ari’. 

�e team is self- funded and run 

by local skaters and crew for the 

benefit of girls and women in and 

around Bedfordshire. �eir aim 

is to build a team to compete 

in national and international 

arenas and the sport has already 

been considered for the 2020 

Olympics. �e 

Roller girls come 

from all walks of life, 

levels and abilities 

get together with 

their one common 

theme – they love to roller skate! 

All the players have their own 

Roller Girl names such as ‘CatFace 

KillHer’, ‘Inky Minx’ and ‘Beluah 

Ballbreaker’- there is a strong 

punk, third wave feminist ethic 

to these teams! 

How is Roller Derby 

played? 

�e game has two periods of 

30 minutes each, each period 

is broken down into 2 minute 

“jams”. For each jam, each team 

sends five skaters to the track- a 

pivot to control the pack and act 

as a blocker, three blockers and a 

jammer to score points. 

At the first whistle the pack 

moves o�. At the second whistle 

the faster jammers take o� and 

pick their way through the pack 

-blockers help her through and 

try obstructing the opposing 

jammer. �e first jammer through 

the pack without penalties is 

designated “lead jammer” and 

can now call o� the jam at any 

time rather than waiting for 

the two minutes to elapse. 

On the second and 

subsequent passes 

through the pack, the 

jammers pick up one point for 

each member of the opposing 

team that she passes. At the end 

of the two minutes, the skaters 

leave the track and a fresh set line 

up and the mayhem ensues once 

again! It’s, fun, fast and furious 

and not for the faint hearted!

VOLUNTEERING 

A DAY IN THE LIFE ... 

There are times in life when having 

an experience, good or bad, inspires 

people to do something new. When Eric 

Kelk was in his late sixties he found himself 

a new volunteer role at Bedford hospital 

which lasted over a decade to come. 

Eric, now aged 83, is the Ex Director of Finance at 

Bedford Borough Council, previous Chairman of 

Bedford Bamberg Association and a trustee of Age 

UK, Bedfordshire He has always run a full and busy 

life but after retiring, Eric experienced some ill health 

and was referred to Bedford Hospital Eye Clinic 

where he received ‘top class, excellent care.’ He was 

so impressed by the hard work and dedication of 

the sta� there that he enquired at the WRVS about 

volunteering and began a couple of hours a week on 

the reception desk in Outpatients. 

Later he became a member of the volunteer team 

helping on the Main Reception desk. He liked doing 

his bit there and life was good. But 3 years ago his 

beloved wife su�ered a stroke and passed away a 

few months later. �is interrupted his voluntary 

work for a time but eventually he returned to the 

main Reception Desk. Last November Eric had a 

triple heart bypass but made a good recovery and 

after some weeks away resumed his volunteering. 

�is built his strength and confidence again and 

improved his social life. “Many people my age are 

not that active and when you lose your partner, you 

wonder why bother. After 

my operation I was worried 

about overdoing it but I knew 

I needed to get out and do 

something to help myself. You need to make what 

you can out of life and make it fulfilling- it kept me 

involved with life and people”. Nothing holds Eric 

back and he is proud to be part of a dedicated team 

of volunteers at Bedford Hospital who help and guide 

the public to many destinations and appointments. 

�ere is never a dull moment and he never knows 

who might come through the door next!

does. With over 100 departments and 30 wards,

most people need directions and now on the busy 

main reception, Eric finds himself doing anything 

from taking patients with walking di�culties to 

their appointments in wheelchairs to tracking down 

missing people. Often, they are not really missing 

but the hospital is a common calling ground when 

friends, neighbours and even police are looking 

for someone vulnerable. He enjoys being the first 

point of contact for many and his calm, organised 

and friendly manner means he copes well even

Eric is a real inspiration and proves that whatever 

your age, you can do something new, get involved 

and make a new beginning. He has no plans to give 

up and encourages all his friends to try something 

new and just make the most of life. 

He says “�ere is always someone worse o� than you 

and working here reminds me of that every day. It is 

a worthwhile role, so full of variety and it certainly 

keeps me young!” 


BEDFORDSHIRE 

HEARING, member of the 

Association of Independent

world’s leading manufacturer 

of hearing instruments. 

�eir aim is to help those who have 

su�ered a hearing impairment 

in Britain’s current conflicts and 

have been discharged as a result. 

Former troops who have served 

in recent conflicts and fit the 

above criteria will be eligible to 

benefit from this scheme. 

Noise exposure 

�e 9,500 British troops currently 

stationed in Afghanistan are 

regularly exposed to the blast 

of guns or ‘medium’ explosions 

measuring 140 decibels (dB) – 

far exceeding the noise level of 

85dB at which hearing damage 

can occur. As a result of this noise 

exposure, troops are at a high 

risk of su�ering severe and even 

permanent hearing damage. 

As well as a choice of cutting 

edge hearing instruments, eligible

�e ‘Last Post’ remembered ... 

�e haunting melody 

of a father’s love 

It gives us the lump in our throats and usually 

tears in our eyes. During the sounding of the 

last post all members in uniform are to 

stand to attention and salute. 

But do you know the story 

behind the song? 

Reportedly, it all began 

in 1862 during the 

American Civil War, 

when Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe was 

with his men near Harrison’s Landing in Virginia. 

�e Confederate Army was on the other side of the 

narrow strip of land. 

During the night, Captain Ellicombe heard the 

moans of a soldier who lay severely wounded on the 

field. Not knowing if it was a Union or Confederate 

soldier, the Captain decided to risk his life and

We have all heard the haunting song, ‘�e Last Post.’ Originally known as ‘�e 

Retreat’, it is the song played at military funerals and commemorative events such 

as Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day to indicate that the soldiers day has drawn 

to a final close.

Crawling on his stomach through the gunfire, the 

Captain reached the stricken soldier 

and began pulling him 

toward his encampment. 

When the Captain finally 

reached his own lines, he 

discovered it was actually a 

Confederate soldier, but the soldier 

was dead. 

�e Captain lit a lantern and suddenly caught his 

breath and went numb with shock. In the dim light, 

he saw the face of the soldier. It was his own son. 

�e boy had been studying music in the South when 

the war broke out. Without telling his father, the boy 

enlisted in the Confederate Army. 

�e following morning, heartbroken, the father 


... �e story behind the song 

asked permission of his superiors to give his son 

a full military burial, despite his enemy status. 

His request was only partially granted. 

�e Captain asked if he could have a group of 

Army band members play a funeral dirge for his 

son at the funeral but the request was denied 

since the soldier was a Confederate. 

His wish was granted 

But out of respect for the father, they granted 

him one musician only. �e Captain chose a 

bugler. He asked the bugler to play a series of 

musical notes he had found on a piece of paper 

in the pocket of his dead son’s uniform. �is 

wish was granted. 

And so the haunting melody, we now know as 

‘�e Last Post’ was born…

From addict to counsellor 

Aged 15, Dale Conlon 

began experimenting 

with drugs. Smoking 

cannabis became a daily 

event and nothing was out 

of bounds. �is led him 

down a long, traumatic 

path but also brought him 

to the place in life he is now. 

Little fear of consequences from 

drugs meant that Dale pushed 

the boundaries of his tolerance 

constantly and as a result found 

himself caught in a spiral 

of addiction he couldn’t 

break. He said “One of the 

scariest times was my 18th birthday when I took more 

drugs than I ever had before 

-I had no fear whatsoever. I 

knew I was abusing drugs 

but when I experienced 

my first withdrawal, I just 

thought I had the flu. I had no 

education about the damage 

drugs could do “ 

Dale developed a heroin 

addiction which he hid for 

8 years. He kept working, 

had a string of unhealthy 

relationships, spent time with 

other users and spent all his 

earnings on drugs. He had 

little interest in anything else. 

Friends asked him about heroin 

use but he denied it. Constantly 

justifying his habit to himself, 

Dale thought he couldn’t change 

it. Relationships with family were 

breaking down, friends stepped 

away and he found himself 

alone. Moving to Brighton, he 

just ran from himself. Dale said 

‘�ere are massive parts of my 

life I can’t remember and never 

will. �e addiction destroyed 

people around me long before it 

destroyed me. I had no emotions 

left, everything became a lie’ 

�ings didn’t improve in Brighton. 

From injecting, he developed an 

abscess behind his knee the size of 

a tennis ball due to lead fragment 

from a needle. Amputation was 

a reality and the level of opiates 

in his blood posed huge risks for 

operating. Dale kept his life and 

his leg but after 19 days in hospital, 

the first thing he did was score. 

Dale Conlon – “Everyone can get clean.” 

With 3 overdoses in 4 weeks, he 

was out of control. He went on a 

methadone programme. He had 

wanted to kick just the heroin but 

he then realised it all had to stop. 

He said “So I decided. �at was 

it. It ends now or I die. I went to 

rehab, refused all medication, 

didn’t sleep for 21 days, went to 

hell and after months of harrowing 

recovery, I knew I would never go 

back to drugs’ 

After a long, painful journey, the 

numbness began to subside and it 

was during one of his counselling 

sessions that he started considering 

his future. He understood other 

addicts and wanted to help. He 

started as a support worker and 

progressed to complete a degree 

in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. 

He became an Senior Admissions 

Counsellor so now Dale helps 

people from all walks of life with 

all types of addiction. 

He says “I never forget my 

addiction, it’s part of me 

– so I understand other 

addicts. It sounds like a 

cliché but everyone can get 

clean if they are willing to 

really understand what is 

happening and be willing 

to change. Detox is the easy 

part –the tough part is 

accepting yourself and I can 

only help people who are 

truly ready”

The heart is a powerful muscle which 

pumps blood and oxygen around the 

body and heart failure occurs when the 

heart does not pump blood as well as it 

should. In most cases heart failure is the 

result of a heart attack. 

When we have a heart attack, a portion of our heart 

muscle is damaged and dies. At the moment, once 

your heart is damaged, you will live with that damage 

for the rest of your life - it cannot be reversed and 

the damage can impair the pumping action of your 

heart – causing heart failure. When you have heart

Raising funds for Dreamflight 

Bedford Fundraising Group was born out the desire of local woman Jenny Hillam to 

raise money to support another charity, Dreamflight, who send seriously ill children 

on a trip of a lifetime to Orlando. 

Once a year, 192 children 

board a chartered Boeing 747 

accompanied by a team of 

medical carers and head o� to 

Disneyland, Florida to spend 10 

magical days that will enable 

them to have the most fun any 

of them can ever hope for in 

their lifetime. Illnesses such as 

muscular dystrophy, cerebral 

palsy, Leukemia and some very 

rare genetic disorders mean many 

of these children could never 

undertake such a trip without the 

�e Dreamflight Men 

support of the army of doctors, 

nurses, physiotherapists and nonmedical 

volunteers who care for 

them 24 hours a day while they 

are away from home. 

Fun is important 

For healthy children, fun and 

joy are a part of life and for sick 

children, fun is not a luxury they 

have yet it is just as important as 

medical research and equipment 

– maybe more so – especially for 

children who perhaps can’t wait

as other children are and they 

have serious limitations but on 

the trip, they are allowed to be

whole new outlook on life. Often 

for the first time, they realise 

that they are not alone and they 

are not the odd one out. �ey 

see other children around them 

who have also su�ered, they 

gain perspective and experience 

things they never thought 

possible. Matt Wesley from 

Cranfield was 9 when he went on 

his trip of a lifetime. �e highlight 

of his holiday was swimming with 

the dolphins, an amazing and 

very healing experience which he 

treasured. �ese experiences are 

priceless. His family said Matt 


never stopped talking about his 

trip and he watched his holiday 

DVD over and over again, reliving 

the amazing time he had. 

Tirelessly committed 

Sadly, Matt passed away in 2007 

but his Disneyland experience 

meant so much to him, proving 

Dreamflight does something that 

medicine can’t. �is is exactly 

what keeps Jenny tirelessly 

committed to raising funds 

through Bedford Fundraising 

Group. 

Having been on one of the trips 

as a volunteer non-medical 

carer, she has seen the incredible 

di�erence the holidays make to 

the children and during the last 

16 years, she has shown nothing 

but dedication to the charity. 

Matt’s parents Tim and Dawn are 

now key members of BFG, helping 

to raise funds for other children 

like their son. 

Jenny told us “I first got involved 

with Dreamflight 19 years ago 

when I worked as a Manager at 

Jenny and her daughter, Kimberly 

Matt Wesley – swimming with dolphins 

Bedford Megabowl. I got a call 

about arranging an event for the 

children and families to meet 

up before one of their Orlando 

trips. When they came, it was 

incredible. As I found out more 

about them I fell hook, line and 

sinker in love with not only with 

the children but the whole ethos 

of the charity. 

Compassion and love 

�at day touched me so deeply 

and over the years, it has become 

a part of who I am. I do it out 

of compassion and love for 

those kids and their families and 

because I truly believe in the 

value of these trips, I have seen 

what it means to them, their faces 

tell you all you need to know. �e 

way they cope and manage their 

illnesses is humbling” 

�e committee, Jenny’s daughter 

Kimberley and all the people 

involved with BFG are just as 

committed. In 2011-12, they 

all raised a spectacular £48,577 

for the charity. �is year, with 

the help of new sponsors and 

committee members, the goal is 

£60,000.

Arthritis – what is it? 

In a nutshell -a real nuisance! It won’t kill 

you but it can make your life a misery. 

Fortunately modern medicine has several 

ways of treating this nasty a�iction. 

�e term (Greek arthron = joint, and ~itis = 

inflammation) is a very general term covering 

a whole host of joint conditions. In general they 

can be divided into two common groups – 

osteoarthritis and inflammatory arthritis. 

It can a�ect one or many joints. Why is it 

worse in winter? No idea! 

Osteoarthritis, or “wear and tear’ 

arthritis, is caused by loss of cartilage 

at the ends of the bones. �is may be 

the result of genetically poor cartilage, 

abnormal stresses on the joint (too 

much weight, deformed bones, 

trauma, etc.) or other factors such as 

infection. Often there is no obvious cause 

other than old age! Joints become painful, sti� 

and deformed. 

Inflammatory arthritis has multiple causes, 

the most common of which is rheumatoid 

arthritis. It can strike at any age and is often 

initially treated medically. If the progression 

of the disease cannot be halted surgery may 

be appropriate. 

Treatment 

Early stage treatment is usually non-operative. �is 

may involve alteration of activities, splints, pain 

medication, load reduction (e.g. use of a walking 

stick or losing weight - if the legs are a�ected) 

and mobilisation (i.e. keep moving). Top tip – 

for hip arthritis use stick in the opposite hand. 

Physiotherapy may be of use in certain conditions. 

Injections of steroids in and around painful joints 

may be useful. Most surgeons do not like to routinely 

inject steroids into large joints such as the knee. 

More recently injections of hyaluronic acid (“joint 

oil”) have shown to be of some benefit in some cases 

of knee arthritis. 

Surgery can be very e�ective for some joints under 

the right conditions. Everyone thinks immediately 

about hip replacements which are a phenomenal 

success, but the options for several joints are varied. 

�ese may include: 

Joint debridement (tidy up!). Can be useful 

especially in the knee and big toe. 

Joint excision �is sounds thoroughly barbaric 

but can work extremely well and result in 

much improved function and is commonly 

performed at the end of the collarbone, 

the thumb and also the toes. 

Joint fusion �is involves permanently 

stopping the joint from moving and 

therefore taking away the pain. Not 

a great option for most joints but it 

is remarkable how function can be 

improved by fusing for example a 

finger joint. 

Joint re-alignment If only half the joint is 

worn, it may be possible to re-arrange the 

bones to decrease the stresses on that part of 

the joint and make the more normal side take 

most of the load. 

Joint replacement �is is the Holy Grail 

for orthopaedic surgeons. Hip and knee 

replacements are well established and 

are very successful if performed under the right 

conditions. It is possible to replace many other joints 

under certain conditions and with variable success.

can be intensely passionate and they will spend

devastating. But intimacy involves openness, sharing 

and trust so it all contributes to maturity. A good 

experience of first love can set a healthy pathway for 

love in the future. As parents, it helps to be aware of 

these changes and the e�ects they can have so you 

can be supportive and understanding.

Be part of Speedwatch and help 

reduce speeding in your area 

Are you concerned about speeding 

vehicles in your area? You can help to 

reduce this by volunteering to be part of a 

new initiative. 

Supported by Bedford Borough Council and 

Bedfordshire Police, the Speedwatch initiative is 

designed to educate drivers about their speed 

and help reduce speeding in areas where there is a 

high risk of accidents and 

where residents are feeling 

unsafe due to speed limits 

not being adhered to. 

❝ It is really good to be part of 

tackling speeding in our area 

�e initiative is running Borough wide and when a 

street or road with a speed limit of up to 30mph has 

been highlighted and identified as a concern, they 

are inviting local residents to volunteer to be trained 

and carry out an operation using a Speed Indication 

Device – SID. �ere are already 83 volunteers 

across the borough with 46 now fully trained. 

A local Police Community Safety O�cer will 

undertake an initial risk assessment of the 

area and agree a location to position the SID. 

�e equipment will be delivered and support 

provided to the volunteers during roadside 

setup. A minimum of two volunteers must be 

present at each location to run Speedwatch. 

When a vehicle approaches, a smiley face is 

displayed if the vehicle is below the speed limit 

and an unhappy face if the vehicle is travelling in

the flu season, thousands of us 

are unlucky enough to catch this nasty 

virus. Mostly, we just end up spending a 

miserable few days in bed. 

But in some people, the virus triggers complications 

causing infections and even death. Many of these 

infections are preventable and the jab is available 

on the NHS to everyone aged over 65, people 

with serious underlying health issues such as heart 

conditions, chest complaints, kidney disease, 

diabetes, low immunity and anyone who has 

su�ered a stroke. Pregnant women should have the 

flu jab - at any stage of pregnancy. 

If you’re the carer of an elderly or disabled person, 

make sure they’ve had their flu jab and as a carer, 

you could also be eligible for a jab. Children over 6 

months with long term health conditions should 

have the jab and annual flu jabs for children aged 

2-17 are recommended although they won’t be 

available on the NHS until 2014. 

Unlike a bad cold, flu can have widespread e�ects on

is very rewarding and the working enviroment very friendly. We are 

particularly short on Saturdays. Many of our volunteers are elderly, 

and some are disabled. We don’t mind. All we need is volunteers with 

a little intelligence, who can fill out our forms, be courteous to our

Indoor only FIV cat and kittens need loving homes 

F IV 

(Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) is a 

virus in cats that is similar to the human 

virus, HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). 

However, FIV does not infect humans and HIV 

does not infect cats. �e virus is present in blood, 

saliva and other bodily fluids of an infected cat and 

cannot survive for long outside of the cat. It cannot 

be transferred from cat to cat on hands or clothes. 

Instead it is generally transmitted through biting and 

mating. An infected mother is likely to pass it on to 

one, or all, of her kittens. Unfortunately there is no 

vaccine for FIV in the UK, although having your cat 

neutered reduces their chances of contracting FIV 

through fighting or mating. 

FIV a�ects the immune system of cats, meaning 

cats that are FIV positive can be more susceptible to 

infections. By keeping an FIV positive cat as an indoor 

only cat it will reduce their exposure to anything
