Introduction<br />
What do we mean when we say that we see something? To grasp the complexity<br />
of what it is to see <strong>and</strong> to not see, try the following: describe in words<br />
everything you see before you just now – not just the objects <strong>and</strong> surfaces, but<br />
everything you see: colours, textures, shadows, highlights, reflections, all<br />
visual qualities down to the minutest details. The task is overwhelming even<br />
when viewing the simplest of scenes. One very quickly becomes aware of the<br />
many levels to seeing: the optical, the symbolical, the holistic, the detailed,<br />
<strong>and</strong> so on. It also takes but a moment’s reflection to realize that only a fraction<br />
of what we are looking at each moment is “taken in” into our consciousness,<br />
processed <strong>and</strong> stored for later reference. There simply isn’t room for all<br />
