No-shows
– reducing the number of
missed appointments
Patients who skip their appointments repeatedly are a
burden to the healthcare system. The current healthcare
IT systems, however, do not properly support addressing
regular no-shows. For example, they do not tell
nurses which patients have a history of not showing
up, and the letters and reminders that are sent are
too formal and generic. This first stage of this project
was a No-show toolkit, which clinics can use to build
customised letters, notifications and
appointment cards. The second stage
was to improve the IT systems to
make communication and scheduling
easier. Thirdly a system was
proposed that gives patients access
to their healthcare history, such as
missed and upcoming appointments.
This makes scheduling and cancelling
appointments easier for both
staff and patients.
