DIVISION OF TRANSPORTATION<br />

I. Program Responsibilities:<br />

The Transportation Division is charged with the responsibility <strong>of</strong> assuring municipal transportation in the most convenient<br />

and safe manner with minimum interference and congestion. This includes the implementation, operation and<br />

maintenance <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong>'s traffic system services. The Division also provides engineering services and supervision<br />

related to the planning and development <strong>of</strong> normal traffic patterns. The Division has the responsibility for the operation<br />

and maintenance <strong>of</strong> <strong>City</strong> parking meters and the inspection <strong>of</strong> all municipal lots and parking garages.<br />

The Transportation Division is responsible for the payment <strong>of</strong> energy costs, maintenance, installation and removal <strong>of</strong> all<br />

lights along public thoroughfares in the <strong>City</strong>. This is done under contract with National Grid. The major purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

street lighting in the <strong>City</strong> is to promote traffic safety. Special lighting districts also provide the opportunity for special<br />

decorative street lights. The Department <strong>of</strong> Public Works evaluates requests for new or increased lighting and refers<br />

orders for repairing broken street lights to National Grid consistent with New York State Public Service commission<br />

regulations.<br />
