POWER TO FLY
FREEDOM TO EXPLORE
Have you ever dreamed of enjoying the
mountain in its purest form without the
hustle and bustle of a ski-resort? Of getting
to the top without queuing for the ski-lift?
Or looked across at clean, empty mountains
wishing you could access all that powder
and terrain?
Then you need snowkiting!
Snowkiting is the ultimate dream. To us at
Ozone it’s about getting out there and using
the power a kite gives you to cruise, slash,
jump and carve your way across snowfields,
mountain ranges, ice-caps and even your
own backyard. Snowkiting up-hill is as much
fun as the decent without the kite; you’ll be
blasting across all over the mountain, free as
the wind!
You can climb 1000m in 10 minutes or kite
across the terrain that you dream to ride,
not where a resort dictates. You have 100%
control and thanks to our parafoil design, with
an Ozone snowkite you just un-wind and GO!
At Ozone we’ve been perfecting snowkite
design since 2001, to give you the ultimate
tool for kiting on snow and accessing killer
terrain. If you love the snow and are a
snowboarder or skier who wishes you
could ride when and where you want,
then snowkiting is for you!
The best for ultimate performance and
maximum safety, Ozone kites for 2007/8
have been tested all over the world by
our industry leading team of riders and
designers, including snowkiting legend,
Guillaume “Chasta” Chastagnol.
Life is for LIVING! So this winter, go
snowkiting: it opens up a whole new
world just ready for the taking.
Matt Taggart
Matt Taggart and all the Ozone Team
Snowkiting also extends your winter
seasons; we are typically the first winter
sports enthusiasts enjoying the first
snowfalls, and long after the resorts close
in April you’ll still find snowkiters loving
the spring snow.

Snowkiting is hard to beat as a
sport; it offers total freedom, no
adventure every time you ride.
Its my favourite fix!
Fave Kites:
the Manta II 12m. The ultimate
snowkite quiver for all wind
speeds and conditions.
Riding:
Fave moment:
Backcountry on Hector Mountain,
New Zealand with Chasta and
Pascal!
I saw a photo of snowkiting some
8 years ago. It looked amazing, so
when the snow came I had to try it
for myself. My first attempts were
slightly out of control but I did ride,
and the feeling I got has kept me
addicted ever since. I love all
adventure sports but nothing does
it for me like snowkiting.
I remember riding in Norway with
the Ozone team. With perfect
conditions we cruised far and wide
across the snow covered landscape,
only stopping when we found wind
lips and features to launch off and
powder to rip up. Memories so
good I will take them to my grave!
My quiver… Manta 10m for everyday
riding, Frenzy 11m for the light winds,
Access 6m for the strong wind and
my new Manta 15m for flying.
I started snowkiting about 8 years
ago and one day I came to the
Lautaret Pass and saw the guys
riding in the mountains. That was
the point where it all turned around
and a new world opened up for me.
Since then all I’m looking for is
mountains or backcountries. I
practice all kind of kitesports but
snowkiting is my favourite by far.
I use Frenzy FX 13m for light winds
plus the 9m. Access 8m and 6m
for backcountry and mountains in
strong gusty conditions, wearing the
new Access XC harness as backup
above my waist harness. I always
have a backpack with me with a
smaller kite plus tea or water and
chocolate bars. Using touring skis
plus skins and telescope poles to
get back if wind stops.
Ride safe, Dom.
I followed the winter for 6 seasons in
a row, snowboarding in the States/
Canada and NZ. Then I discovered
kite-sports about 6 years ago and
haven’t looked back. Snowkiting for
me inserts the missing link in the
sport of snowboarding.
With snowkiting once you have your
gear you are no longer limited by ski
resort facilities or boundaries. For
free you ride all day with your mates
where you want, sessioning natures
transitions, untouched powder, and
literally flying down the sides of
mountains, ye-haaa now that’s living!!
Kites of choice;
Frenzy FX 13m tractor for light winds,
the Manta II 10m jumping machine
for high winds and the 6m Access XC
for nuking winds or teaching friends.
THE OZONE CREW
Guillaume
CHASTA
Chastagnol
I started snowkiting 8 years ago at the Lautaret pass, in the steep
mountains. Right away I understood that this was my ‘free’ lift ticket,
and perfect to discover new spots around those beautiful glaciers.
Then I met the Ozone Crew, and got the best foil kites; easy to kill at the
top of the hill, and easy to pack for snowboarding down again. We’re all
addicted to riding the mountains in 3 dimensions, and see the potential of
riding new spots all around the world!
My quiver...12m and 10m Manta, and 8m for sure, plus my normal
harness with a climbing harness.
So, see you on the spot soon!
SIGVE
Botnen
I started snowkiting in 2001. This was totally new to me, but I found out
how it worked with a friend. This was so cool! You can go where ever you
want to go, uphill, downhill, jump, fly, so many possibilities. I got hooked
straight away, and wanted to be out kiting all the time. For me it’s all about
having fun, pushing the level of kiting, being outdoors and doing a sport
you can master. I push the wake-style with my friends. It feels so good
when you have a new trick in hand, or you go full speed in 20cm powder.
It’s hard to put the feeling into words, just a super good feeling. I also do
water kiting. It is nice to do both; snowkiting and waterkiting. When you
have been one winter on the mountain it feels good to go back on the
water and opposite. It never gets boring.
KARI
Schibevaag
I grew up in the mountains and miss it when I’m not there! It’s the fresh air,
space and using the power of nature that makes snowkiting special. I never
get bored of the possibilities, or the amazing scenery! Snowkiting doesn’t just
mean big air or jumps; pack a bag and go; uphill, downhill, from cabin to
cabin! Imagine a day with bluesky and a kite in the air taking you where you
want to go - you might be the very first person on that exact spot.
Kiting is easier to learn on snow, and it’s a sport anyone can enjoy, young or
old! You don’t need to be an athlete or need as much power or wind to get
moving, but it’s important to have someone teach you so you know how to
control and manage the equipment and the elements. Take care like in any
mountain sport, and then go enjoy!
PASCAL
Boulgakow
I started snowkiting about 3 years ago. There are four ways about this
wonderful sport: cruising around, freestyle, flying, and freeride
backcountry. The last one is definitely my favourite. I prepare each of my
session with this main goal, going as far as possible, slowly, enjoying the
powder, the game with the wind to cross the hills, the valleys, the
mountains, and come back.
I use two Ozone kites; the 10m Manta II and the 6m Access XC.
I wear the new XC Harness, and I go with mountaineering skis, with
skins and poles to come back if the wind stops. I’m 50 years old, and a
grand-father, that means everybody can learn and manage snowkiting!
THE ONLY ONE
TO TRUST
At Ozone, we’re proud of our reputation
as the innovators of snowkiting and the
makers of the finest snowkites on the
market. For the 2007/8 season we’ve
worked hard to bring you the best
Ozone kites ever.
Robbie and the design team have
added some excellent new design
features to dramatically improve the
performance; we have developed the
all new Ozone Megatron Chickenloop,
a superb new control system, plus new
bar ends and a far easier stall system.
All our kites are manufactured from
Ozone 40D High tenacity ripstop Nylon,
with SK 75 Dyneema flying lines and
sheathed Dyneema bridle lines, for the
best possible durability.
Riders like Chasta and the Pittarak
kites implicitly, so our focus is on
performance, safety and quality –
NEW
CHICKENLOOP
Our NEW, moulded Megatron Chickenloop is easy to
operate, with a wide mouth for hooking in and out
easily. It passes all requirements of the AFNOR EU
Norms for Chickenloop releases in emergency
situations.
GOODFOR
Spinning top handle for easy line un-tangling, with
suicide leash attachment, fits into the bar for perfect
connection (male to female), fool-proof release system,
easy re-connection with one hand. Bullet proof Beal
trim line will never wear out, though it is replaceable
in case of failure by accident.
The Ozone RE-RIDE safety system is the original
and finest safety system for depowering kites. It
could not be easier to use: simply reach up and
grab the RED safety handle, pull down and the kite
remains connected to you but without power. It stalls
and lands neatly downwind of you ready for you to
re-connect the system.
Y-LINE
3 lines from the bar: the middle power line is a 500kg
line, splitting in a Y to each side of the speedsystem kite.
GOODFOR
Really improving the kite’s turn, reduced parasitic
drag, increased speed and no twists in the lines.
THE FRENZY HAS
BEEN THE GOOD
FRIEND OF MANY
SNOWKITERS
CHOOSE YOUR KITE
know the ropes
ROBBIE’S DESIGN Notes
The Frenzy has been the good friend of many
snowkiters across the globe since its debut six years
ago. With the Frenzy, Chasta has taken three world
titles and pushed the boundaries of the sport further
than most of us can imagine.
For 2007/8, the FX has a thinner profile to fly faster
and extend the de power range. The bridles have been
minimised to reduce drag and increase performance
and speed; the handling has lighter bar pressure and
faster turning. The new X-line and Y-line systems
improve handling, reduce drag even further and help
reduce the chance of bowtie-ing the kite.
This is still a low down grunt kite which produces
power just by putting it in the air, but it is smoother,
faster and lighter to handle.
FRENZY FX 7m
IDEALFOR
Light riders or strong winds. It is fast handling and
produces good solid power when you move it. If you
can only have one kite and you weigh less than 70kg
then this is for you.
RIDERWEIGHT
50kg to 80kg
WINDRANGE
FRENZY FX 9m
IDEALFOR
The perfect all rounder, ideal for riders that want to do a
bit of everything. We like the kite because it is good for
cruising, jumping or mountain climbing.
RIDERWEIGHT
60kg to 90kg
WINDRANGE
5 to 20 knots
FRENZY FX 11m
IDEALFOR
A power house that will pull almost anything. If you
like to jump and fly then this is what you are looking
for. For a big kite it handles well and the de-power
is excellent.
RIDERWEIGHT
70kg to 100+kg
WINDRANGE
5 to 20 knots
FRENZY FX 13m
IDEALFOR
Very light winds or a heavy rider are needed; this kite
has so much grunt and it pulls like hell from the
moment you put it in the air. It is easier to fly than
the Manta 15m and is only slightly less powerful
which makes it a good option for bigger riders.
If the 11m is not enough for you, then try this!
RADICALLY
DIFFERENT FROM
THE ORIGINAL
MANTA
CHOOSE YOUR KITE
max out
ROBBIE’S DESIGN Notes
This is radically different from the original Manta;
a lighter, faster handling kite with dynamic pop and
amazing de-power, the Manta II really does push
the boundaries!
When the first prototype was flying well, I gave it to Chasta
to try. After a minute he was higher than I had ever seen
him; he sessioned for about an hour doing double kite
loops, mega airs and rotations, then came back to me
smiling and not wanting to give the proto back!
The two pulley speed system reduces bar pressure
tremendously and allows the kite to fly faster while
retaining stability throughout the wind range.
Because the handling is faster it is easy to pop and the
high performance profile keeps you up there for a long
time. In light wind you have to work the kite to gain
speed but once you feel it power up it just keeps pulling
progressively. In stronger wind the kite just powers up
and is super fun to ride.
Unlike the Frenzy, the Manta II does not have low down
grunt power, you need to create speed to get the power
out of this kite which is why it is a high performance
kite designed for riders that know how to kite.
SEASONPASS 07/08
MANTA II 8m
IDEALFOR
The small size is very fast, creating a lot of power when
you move it; lighter riders will rip on this kite in all winds
and heavy riders using it in strong wind will be amazed
by the power it produces. My personal favourite from
15 knots and up.
RIDERWEIGHT
50kg to 80kg
WINDRANGE
5 to 20 knots
MANTA II 10m
IDEALFOR
Good all rounder. I used to ride the 12m Frenzy, but
last season I rode the 10m Manta II proto and I found
that, at my weight, this is all I need. My kite of choice
this season.
WINDRANGE
MANTA II 12m
IDEALFOR
Although bigger, this retains good handling, is still fast
and has really good hang time, so it is a great freestyle
choice. I’m sure Chasta will be using the 12m just about
all the time because he can handle the power well.
RIDERWEIGHT
70kg to 100+kg
WINDRANGE
5 to 20 knots.
MANTA II 15m
IDEALFOR
A big kite for big guys or very big air if you ride like
Chasta. For sure it has power even in light winds but
because of its size it requires skill to keep it flying in
very light winds. In stronger winds it is a flying machine
beyond belief! This kite pulls hard.
STAY SAFE AND HAVE FUN!
Hints and tips from the Ozone team . . .
OK, so you’ve got your kite, your snowboard and all the usual wintersports clothing, you’re ready to
head for the mountains, but what about those little extras that could make all the difference?
Here’s a few ideas from our team, sorted over years of experience – believe us, this stuff is invaluable!
>> Make sure you learn how to kite loop straight away,
when starting out. On snow we loop the kite to
climb mountains and use the terrain to it’s best
>> A rescue whistle is handy to carry for emergencies
>> Ski uphill, so if the winds dies you can just
snowboard/ski down, easy and fun
>> If you're going be on the hills, avalanche gear is a
necessity just like it is for anytime you venture
back country
>> If the wind dies make sure you have a backup
plan. Consider taking snow shoes if you use a
board or have skins for your skis and telescopic
poles - it might be a long walk back
>> The Ozone Balaclava Ninja Mask is a must have -
you will never leave home without one, once it’s
saved you on a cold day! (see page 14)
>> Take a smaller kite with you. If you climb
mountains remember the wind gets stronger the
higher you get! You then have spare bar and lines
as backup
>> GPS for navigation; to log your track to see how
far and fast you went and to get back home if the
weather turns bad
>> Food and drink (chocolate bars, tea, sugar and
something hot is what you need mostly). Use an
insulated Camelbak or thermal bottle so your
liquid doesn't freeze
>> Ski gloves with a separate inner glove so your
hands don’t freeze when you are setting up, giving
you full dexterity. You will love spare gloves when
your fingers get cold and wet!
>> Going back country? Let your friends know where
you plan to go, and check in with them when you
get back
>> Remember, mobile phone batteries don’t last long
in cold temperatures and you might also fall out
of reception
>> Check all your lines after every session; the bar
leaders, chickenloop, main flying lines and the
speed and bridle lines
>> Be careful out there; you think everything is
reachable, but if the wind dies you maybe way
to far to walk back, so plan your routes
Snowkiting is fun, but stay safe!
HINTS & TIPS
LONG LIVE SNOWKITING
Guillaume “Chasta” Chastagnol - words from a world champion
Before Guillaume Chastagnol dominated snowkiting as
triple World Champion, he had already – as a snowboarder
– captured fifth place at the Olympics and was four
times French Championship in the Halfpipe.
Chasta has been on the Ozone Team since the
beginning, his style and attitude is legendary,
continually pushing the boundaries of what’s seen
as being possible….
“When I was only 2 years old I was put on skis, and I
didn't take them off again until my first snowboard ride
in 1990. Then things moved very fast, with free style
competitions and trips around the World to the best
snow slopes. After several titles as French Snowboard
Champion, and good results in the X-Games and the
Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, I was thinking about
converting to something else, but what? Being so in
love with the mountains, what else could I do?
The one day in 1999 my mate Wareck said to me,
“Come on over, we're trying to be towed by a kite in a
field next to my place, you're gonna really dig it”. For a
first try all went well and we carved the place up! It was
pretty cool, but I need a bigger kite to go faster!
The same day I found myself an early 8m 2-line
Kitesurfing tube-kite and one of the first Starter 5m. I
went straight to the Col du Lautaret; the conditions were
perfect with a beautiful sunset, and in no time I found
myself at the bottom of Combeynot, the winds pulling
me up the slopes; I landed the kite and let out a scream
of joy: This was the most fantastic thing that I'd ever
tried.
A new passion was born!! I realised the potential right
away; I could climb all over the mountain to see it from
a lot of new angles. I could ride virgin spots, climb
slopes, cross flat areas, fold the kite at the top,
snowboard down, and start again as many times
as I wanted.
Little by little I stopped taking the ski lifts; it was a real
revelation! On the days when the wind was calmer,
I practised re-making all the grabs and rotations and
other rodeo flips from snowboarding, but now with the
kite. All the training paid off, with my titles as Snowkite
World Champion on the Winter Tour.
Now I find myself with completely incredible kites like
the Ozone Manta or Frenzy, allowing me to push my
tricks and flights to the extreme. Many riders ask me
why I donʼt use a kitesurf tube kite (LEI) on snow, but
for me the answer is simple, they are 100% the wrong
tool for snowkiting.
Snowkiting is about freedom, you canʼt free-ride in
safety with a tube kite, it limits you. Ozone has created
the ultimate backcountry tool for our enjoyment; it is
incredible to be part of that design evolution with the
Ozone Team.
With snowkiting I've acquired a real understanding of
the slopes and mountains, which has made me even
more in love with them”.
Long live snowkiting!!
GREENLAND CONQUERED
GREENLAND CONQUERED
The Pittarak Team – Meet Eric, Sarah & Curtis
Brother and sister team Eric (22) & Sarah (20)
McNair-Landry, plus native of Newfoundland and
Labrador, Curtis Jones (29) recently completed an
unsupported South to North crossing of Greenland.
Imagine the usual hardy Polar Explorer types trudging
their way across frozen landscapes …… now imagine
for a second their faces when Eric, Sarah and Curtis go
ripping past at speeds of up to 70kph, whooping and
yelling with sheer joy, with a sled full of supplies but not
feeling the pain, just enjoying 2300km of untracked
snow all to themselves. Now that would make you cry
wouldn’t it?!
“We waved goodbye to our boat driver who had shuttled
us to the southern tip of Greenland. As he vanished out
of sight, we knew we would not see anybody for the
next 6 weeks. It was up to us, the performance of our
gear, and the cooperation of the weather to cross the
Greenland ice cap from South to North, ending in the
village of Qaanaaq.
A lot of the expeditionʼs success lay in the planning and
research. We needed to make sure that we had the
best equipment, because we relied on it so much. If a
kite broke half way through the expedition, it could
severely reduce our chance of reaching our goals.
We chose Ozone because they are known for their
performance and reliability. We put them to the ultimate
test, it was the first expedition for us using Ozone kites
and the first expedition when we did not have a single
kite failure, not even a snapped line or a small tear”.
In one 24 hour non-stop run to see just how far they
could go, they travelled 412km pulling a 100kg sled
each with all their personal survival gear, food, drink,
tents, bags and other supplies.
Here’s what Eric, Sarah & Curtis would suggest for
a Greenland kite expedition:
Novice explorer
6m Access XC
7m Frenzy FX
9m Frenzy FX
11m Frenzy FX
Advanced explorer
6m Access XC
7m Frenzy FX
10m Manta II
12m Yakuza on 50m lines for the very light wind days.
The Ozone Yakuza is a Race buggy kite that has won
every international and national buggy race in the
world. It’s the leading kite, with incredible power and
is flown on 4-line handles.
Eric, Sarah and Curtis are a breath of fresh air, their
goal when planning an expedition is not just to get
to the end of the route but to have as much fun as
possible on the way….. now that’s something we
approve of!
