Did you know … 

• There were 122,000 carpenters, 36,700 bricklayers/stonemasons, 21,000 wall and floor tilers, 29,000 cabinetmakers, 89,000 

plumbers, 9,900 glaziers in Australia in 2010. The majority of these work full-time and many operate their own businesses. 

• There is a shortage of qualified tradespeople in the building, construction and furnishing industries. In 2011 the government 

identified skills shortages across Australia in stonemasonry, floor finishing, glass and glazing, roof tiling, wall and floor tiling and 

plumbing, and a shortage in carpenters and joiners in NSW. 

• The CPC08 Construction, Plumbing and Services Integrated Framework Training Package is the most popular trade apprentice 

training package in Australia with 23,700 new starters in 2010. 

• SWSi has specialist trade training centres for more than 20 building, construction and furnishing vocational areas. We also have 

the Macarthur Building Industry Skills Centre (MBISC) which offers specialised training for people who wish to qualify for a variety 

of WorkCover licences and a range of pre-vocational and trade courses.
