It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the
18th annual TAFE NSW – South Western Sydney
Institute (SWSi) Achievement Awards. This is the
Institute’s premier event of the year celebrating
achievement and excellence in vocational education
and training for our students and staff.
The Student Awards recognise outstanding achievement
by our students across a diverse range of learning
areas. The Award winners have excelled not only in
their academic program but also in their commitment
to developing their skills and knowledge.
The success of our students is a testament to the
commitment and professionalism of our teaching
and support staff. Tonight we also celebrate the
contribution of our staff to education and training in
NSW and the critical role they have played in providing
a supportive learning environment for our students.
The achievements of our graduates and the professionalism
and skill of our staff have consolidated the Institute’s
reputation as a leading provider of vocational education
and training in Australia and internationally. We are proud
to be recognised for industry responsiveness, quality
delivery, customer service, flexibility and accessibility.
I congratulate the recipients of the TAFE NSW State
Medal Awards, Institute Student Achievement Awards
and Staff Excellence Awards, for their achievements in
2011. I acknowledge the high standards achieved by award
winners and wish them every success in the future. I
am sure our award winners will be proud ambassadors
for SWSi as they progress through their careers.
In celebrating student success, we also recognise
the vitally important role that employers, family and
friends play in student achievement. I would like to

In August 2011, the Personal and Community Services Section at
Bankstown College, in conjunction with the Community, Health and
Personal Services Faculty, entered into a commercial partnership
with Juvenile Justice, Department of Attorney General and Justice
to auspice their training to new staff. The partnership has improved
the business outcomes for Juvenile Justice as their staff now have
access to pathways to higher qualifications through access to learner
evidence guides and having their on-the-job training recognised
as a formal national qualification. This innovative market driven
project supports an excellent model for collaboration and improves
SWSI’s business outcomes because it could potentially be marketed
to other government departments and industry stakeholders.
During 2010 and 2011, Johanna excelled in
creating and driving innovative new TVET
programs to meet the increased demand from
local schools to accommodate the needs of 15-
17 year old school students in line with the new
School Leaving Age policy introduced in 2009.
These new programs include the TVET SPY and
Combo courses which are to be introduced for
the first time in 2012. Johanna has also worked
tirelessly over the past 2-3 years building
relationships with local businesses to promote
School-based Apprenticeships & Traineeships
to further assist in placement of many students.

This project aimed to develop the concept of an outdoor
learning environment for a number of trades including
carpentry, stonemasonry, plumbing and horticulture. Following
completion, the Child Studies section will use the environment
created to provide natural outdoor play experiences for young
children and to model sustainability practices.
The Training and Assessment team have not only
achieved excellence in providing innovative teaching
and assessment practices for Institute teaching
staff, but have shown what outstanding customer
service looks like, without compromising ethics.
They have also been able to demonstrate the
value of collaboration to achieving an outstanding
outcome for the Institute in terms of the number of
teaching staff with a current teaching qualification,
as well as being able to demonstrate that SWSi
values staff. The team often did this under
difficult circumstances while maintaining their
professionalism and dedication to the job at hand.
It aimed to trial innovative ways to deliver our teaching and
assessment within authentic learning situations and develop
an environment which models appropriate sustainable
practices while developing partnerships between teaching
sections across SWSi.

As acting College Manager at Lidcombe, Geoff has
demonstrated Excellence in fulfilling the enabling
Strategies which strengthen Institute capacity
to deliver on Key Focus Areas. He displays the
Institute values – Integrity; Responsiveness;
Inclusiveness; Professionalism; Innovation and
Accountability in every interaction he undertakes
with staff, students, and all other stakeholders
involved in the College’s delivery of outstanding
educational training programs.
Telstra is a national organisation which is transitioning its focus
from being a semi-government telecommunications business to
a high performing media communications business. SWSi has
been engaged to participate in a trial program to upskill Telstra’s
workforce to help them meet their new business requirements.
The Electrotechnology, Information and Communication
Technology and Design Faculty received very positive feedback
from Telstra congratulating us on the success of the program
and the Telstra Lead Assessor Team has been instrumental in
this success. They have worked diligently and cooperatively
with integrity and professionalism to meet the business needs
of SWSi and our partner Telstra.
Geoff has truly upheld all Institute values and the
Enabling Strategies of Performance, improving
organizational performance, workforce capability
and efficiency to meet customer needs.

service organisations, dedicated to making campus
