at South Western Sydney Institute in 2004.
The Student Achievement Awards recognise the
outstanding achievements of students across a
diverse range of learning areas. This recognition
demonstrates to industry and community partners
our commitment to excellence. This year we have
a record number of State Medal winners who have
achieved first place in their TAFE NSW studies.
These awards also provide the opportunity to
acknowledge the great contribution of Institute
the commitment and professionalism of teaching
and support staff.
The Institute strives to create opportunities for
success for individuals, communities and
businesses. Last year, more than 79,000 students
enrolled at the Institute across 730 courses.
Training was conducted at nine colleges
(Bankstown, Campbelltown, Granville, Lidcombe,
Liverpool, Macquarie Fields, Miller, Padstow and
Wetherill Park), and at business, community and
overseas locations.
The quality of our staff and the achievements of
our graduates have strengthened the Institute’s
reputation as the leading provider of vocational
education and training in this region. South
Western Sydney Institute is committed to industry
responsiveness, quality delivery, customer service,
Mathew Kruger
Certificate III in Furnishing
(Furniture Polishing)
Lidcombe College
Not only has Mathew achieved first
place in the state in his course, his teachers have
nominated him as one of the best furniture polishing
students they have seen in many years. Mathew's trade
skills are on display in Parliament House, Canberra, and
a number of other government buildings where he has
polished antique furniture. He has also won several
industry awards. A love of timber inspired Mathew to
pursue the trade and he plans to complete courses in
cabinet making and to specialise in fine furniture.
“TAFE was very important as it helped improve the way I
think and go about doing the work. TAFE also helped me
fine tune the skills needed to do high quality work”.
Student Associations
TAFE NSW - Student Associations are voluntary, nonprofit
organisations that strive to improve life on campus
for all students and staff.
Student Associations provide quality services, facilities,
products, publications and activities that support learning
and teaching. They are responsive to the needs of the
students and help to create an environment where there
is a healthy balance between study and leisure.
Student Associations provide a channel for
communication between students and TAFE NSW. A
Board of Management is elected from the membership of
the Student Association to recommend the expenditure of
student funds in an appropriate and equitable manner.
The board provides an invaluable mechanism for student
consultation and gives students the opportunity to
enhance practical skills and make a tangible contribution
to the college community.
