Automotive
trades
Would you like to …
• Work as a motor mechanic, panel beater, auto electrician or vehicle paint refinisher in automotive workshops, detailing, repairing,
maintaining and testing cars, motorbikes, trucks, buses, earthmoving and agricultural machines?
• Work in the vehicle manufacture industry (truck, bus and trailer), building and modifying cars and other vehicles undertaking
welding, fabrication and assembly techniques, painting and component installation?
• Become a specialist in a particular automotive area, such as electrical systems, bodywork, hydraulics, engine systems, heavy
machinery or heavy goods vehicles?
• Work as a mechanic in the transport or resources industries?
• Manage a smash repair or other automotive workshop, providing customer service to clients, keeping records, processing testing,
checking data and supervising other people?
Did you know …
• The automotive industry is one of the largest in Australia, employing 34,100 assemblers, 9,300 auto electricians, 98,000
mechanics and 19,500 parts and accessory fitters in 2010.
• Most people in the light vehicle industry work full-time (over 90%) and average weekly earnings are between $797 and $972
before tax. Qualified and skilled heavy vehicle mechanics can earn in excess of $100,000 per year.
• There is currently a shortage of both automotive electricians and motor mechanics in NSW and nationally, and a shortage of
fitters in NSW. The current mining boom has opened up many new job prospects in heavy vehicle maintenance and SWSi provides
great opportunities for students to train in and work on large mining equipment currently used in the mining industry.
