We as SW<strong>ISD</strong> Counselors and Social<br />
Workers strive to help students develop<br />
their social, emotional, and academic<br />
skills in order that each student might<br />
maximize his/her potential. <strong>Southwest</strong> I.S.D.<br />
Counseling and Guidance has adopted the<br />
American School Counselor Association<br />
and the Texas Education Agency’s model of<br />
Guidance and Counseling Services. The goal<br />
of this program is to provide academic,<br />
social, and career support to all students<br />
from Pre-Kindergarten through grade<br />
twelve. We assist students by providing<br />
classroom presentations, responsive services,<br />
individual planning, and system support.<br />

High School Counseling Program<br />
High School counselors:<br />
• Provide direct counseling services to<br />

• Advise students on academic planning.<br />
• Provide career guidance to students.<br />
• Provide career information to parents.<br />
• Network with post-secondary schools.<br />
• Serve on school and community<br />
committees addressing the needs of<br />
young people.<br />
• Assist students and parents with<br />
post-secondary applications, testing<br />
requirements, scholarships, and financial<br />
aid information.<br />
Middle School Counseling Program<br />
Middle School counselors:<br />
• Provide direct counseling services to<br />
students individually and in support<br />
groups.<br />
• Help young adolescents learn to manage<br />
and organize information.<br />
• Help young adolescents make choices and<br />
deal with change.<br />
• Help young adolescents create<br />
educational plans and set educational<br />
goals.<br />
• Help young adolescents develop positive<br />
attitudes toward lifelong learning and the<br />
world of work.<br />
• Help young adolescents experience career<br />
exploration activities.<br />
• Help parents and teachers create a<br />
positive learning environment.<br />
Elementary School<br />
Counseling Program<br />
Elementary School counselors:<br />
• Provide direct counseling services to<br />
students individually and in support<br />

• Help children develop a better<br />
understanding and acceptance of<br />
themselves.<br />
• Help children cope with family changes.<br />
• Help children develop decision making<br />
and problem solving skills.<br />
• Help children develop socially,<br />
emotionally, and to mature in their<br />
relations with others.<br />
• Help children to understand themselves in<br />
relation to their own development.<br />
• Help parents understand their children’s<br />
emotions, behaviors, and learning styles,<br />
and assist them in meeting their child’s<br />
needs.<br />
• Help school staff, teachers, and<br />
administrators understand and meet<br />
the needs of all students in intellectual,<br />
personal, and social/emotional areas.<br />
• Help parents and teachers create a<br />
positive learning environment.<br />
School Social Workers<br />
SW<strong>ISD</strong> Social Workers enhance student<br />
learning by providing services which<br />
strengthen home, school, and community<br />
partnerships. They use their training and<br />
professional knowledge to address barriers<br />
within the child, home, school, and<br />
community that may be interfering with<br />
student achievement. School Social Workers<br />
collaborate with the School Counselor(s) on<br />
the campus to meet student needs.<br />
School Social Workers are able to assist<br />
students and their families through early<br />
identification, prevention, counseling,<br />
support, and advocacy.<br />
School Social Workers:<br />
• Provide direct counseling services to<br />
students individually and in support<br />
groups.<br />
• Provide education and support services<br />
to parents.<br />
• Provide consultation services to teachers.<br />
• Help students cope in times of crisis.<br />
• Help students maintain regular school<br />
attendance.<br />
• Help students become resilient, successful<br />
learners.<br />
• Help students gain personal and social<br />
competencies.<br />
• Support parents to help them actively<br />
participate in their child’s education.<br />
• Support parents to access school and<br />
community resources.
