Math Dragon Presents
“Comparing and ordering
rational numbers”

What is a rational
number?
A rational number is any number that can be
expressed as a ratio (a fraction).

So what does it mean to be a rational number?
A rational number can be:
• Fraction
• Decimal
• Percent
• Whole Number
• Mixed Number
Any number
that CAN be
written as a
fraction is a
rational
number.

How do we compare
rational numbers?
In order to compare rational numbers, they all
have to be written the same way.
Change them all to DECIMALS…then compare.

Percent to Decimals
To change a percent to a decimal, move the decimal
2 spaces to the LEFT
Examples 53% = .53
4% = .04
70% = .7
65.4% = .654
.3% = .003
If there is no decimal
on the percent, think of
it as money …where is
the decimal on $2?
When there is no
decimal, it starts at the
percent sign.

Fractions to decimals
To change a fraction to a decimal, you need to
divide. Put the top number in the house and add a
decimal and as many zeros as necessary.
Examples 1 5
4 8
Top number in the
house.
4
.25
1.00
0
1 0
- 8
2 0
- 2 0
0 0
8
.625
5.000
0
5 0
4 8
2 0
- 1 6
0 4 0
- 4 0
0 0
Remember to add a
decimal and some
zeros.

Comparing rational
Use >, < or = to compare the
following rational numbers:
numbers
.64 47%
6% 5/8
7/10 5.2
3.79 374%
3.79 > 3.74
Change percents and
fractions to decimals.
.64 > .47
.06 < .625
.7 < 5.2

ordering rational
To order rational numbers:
numbers
First, write them all to decimals
Second, put them in order
Third, re-write them in their original form
Order from least to greatest:
Change percents and
fractions to decimals.
65%, .375, 4/5, 23%
.65, .375, .8, .23
.23, .375, .65, .8
23%, .375, 65%, 4/5
Write as decimals
Put in Order
Re-write in original form

Time to Practice!!!

Comparing rational
Use >, < or = to compare the
following rational numbers:
numbers
2/5 40%
64% .672
5/8 71%
2.14 208%
Change percents and
fractions to decimals.

Lets See How much you
have learned!!!

Comparing rational
numbers
56% .56
74% 3/4
.8 8%
.49 13/25
Change percents and
fractions to decimals.

What do these problems look like?
Which number line shows the points correctly
labeled?
Change all
fractions to
decimals then
see which
number line has
them in order.

Solving another Picture Problem
Each square below is divided into
sections of equal size. Which
square has 62.5% of its total area
shaded?
Look at the pictures…
Change them from
fractions to decimals
and then percents until
you find 62.5%.

Now you will create a GCF
Problem of your own!!!

Create Your Own
• Write a problem that requires conversions
between fractions, decimals, or percents in order
to be solved.
• Extra points can be earned by drawing a picture
to go with your problem.
• Finally, you need to explain what the correct
answer is and WHY?
• Remember what you learned and don’t be afraid
to take a math adventure like our Math Dragon!!
