Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (Arts)<br />

Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (Business)<br />

The Division <strong>of</strong>fers the degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy on a<br />

full-time or part-time basis. Applicants should have a<br />

Master's degree or the equivalent in a discipline appropriate<br />

to the proposed area <strong>of</strong> study. The level <strong>of</strong> academic<br />

achievement in prior studies should be <strong>of</strong> a very high<br />

standard. Other relevant activities, including work<br />

experience, will be taken into account in assessing<br />

applications.<br />

lntending applicants should approach the Research<br />

Coordinator. or the Executive Officer, <strong>of</strong> the School in which<br />

they intend to undertake their studies. The Research<br />

Coordinator will refer the applicant to the appropriate<br />

member($ <strong>of</strong> staff who may act as supervisors for the<br />

degree. Formal applications for candidature, bearing the<br />

signatures <strong>of</strong> the supervisors and the Head <strong>of</strong> School, are<br />

considered by the Divisional Research Committee and the<br />

<strong>University</strong> Higher Degrees Committee. A candidate may be<br />

required to undertake preliminary coursework as part <strong>of</strong> the<br />

candidature.<br />

The Statute for the degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy (page<br />

443) sets out the regulations governing this qualification.<br />

NO02<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Doctorate in<br />

Psychology<br />

This is a three year full-time higher degree by research.<br />

Students undertake a substantial research project and report<br />

this in the form <strong>of</strong> a major thesis. In addition, graduates from<br />

the course complete all coursework subjects and practicum<br />

experience placements which make up the Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in<br />

Counselling Psychology program. Students are also required<br />

to attend and participate in the School <strong>of</strong> Behavioural and<br />

Social Science's regular program <strong>of</strong> colloquia.<br />

There will normally be an intake <strong>of</strong> up to five new entrants<br />

each year. The School may vary the frequency <strong>of</strong> intake and<br />

the number <strong>of</strong> new entrants depending on the availability <strong>of</strong><br />

staff to provide suitable research supervision. In order to be<br />

admitted to the course, an applicant must hold a first or<br />

upper second class honours degree in psychology from a<br />

recognised Australian university (or hold qualifications<br />

deemed by the <strong>University</strong>'s Higher Degree Committee to be<br />

equivalent) and be eligible for Associate Membership <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Australian Psychological Society. lntending applicants should<br />

consult with the Coordinator <strong>of</strong> the program prior to lodging<br />

an application.<br />

Higher Educational Contribution Scheme<br />

(HECS) exemption<br />

Full-time higher degree students will normally receive a HECS<br />

exemption scholarship.<br />

Australian Postgraduate Research Award<br />

The Australian Research Council (ARC) <strong>of</strong>fers 900 Australian<br />

Postgraduate Research Awards (APRAs) per year to<br />

postgraduate researchers <strong>of</strong> exceptional promise.<br />

Industry Sponsored Scholarships<br />

The Division <strong>of</strong> Business, Humanities and Social Science has<br />

been fortunate to obtain a number <strong>of</strong> scholarships from<br />

industry for which its higher degree students can apply.<br />

Division Scholarships<br />

The Division <strong>of</strong> Business, Humanities and Social Science is<br />

able to <strong>of</strong>fer scholarships for full-time higher degree<br />

students from time to time.<br />

Applications<br />

Applicants should <strong>note</strong> that two to three months should be<br />

allowed for a successful application to be evaluated.<br />

Additionally, applicants wishing to apply for a postgraduate<br />

award must submit their application to the <strong>University</strong> by 31<br />

October in order to have the candidature finalised by the<br />

closing date for these awards.<br />

copies <strong>of</strong> the Statute for the degree <strong>of</strong> Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy<br />

and the degree <strong>of</strong> Master (by research) may be obtained.<br />
