The call for a new kind <strong>of</strong> education program for senior<br />

2 management has been rising in Australia over the past few<br />

w years. This Master's Degree by coursework provides a fresh<br />

$. approach.<br />

This course is built upon the pioneering work <strong>of</strong> the Centre <strong>of</strong><br />

lnnovation and Enterprise through its educational initiatives,<br />

c its involvement in the Victorian lnnovation Centre and the<br />

Victorian Enterprise Workshop program.<br />

. The course aims to prepare students currently engaged in, or<br />

about to embark upon, careers in senior management, with<br />

the skills necessary to take their organisations into new areas<br />

V1 <strong>of</strong> activity. It provides the student with an in-depth<br />

4, knowledge <strong>of</strong> management, but has an outward looking<br />

aspect. The graduate is not a mere administrator <strong>of</strong> a<br />

3. business, but is equipped with the specialist management<br />

and administrative skills necessary to effectively manage a<br />

m productive commercial enterprise, and also to lead it into<br />

new fields.<br />

Admission requirements<br />

Applicants should comply with one <strong>of</strong> the following:<br />

(a) have completed a degree in a pr<strong>of</strong>essional field at a<br />

recognised university or college preferably at honours<br />

level,<br />

(b) have completed the Graduate Diploma in<br />

Entreoreneurshio and lnnovation or the Graduate<br />

bipl&a in ~an'a~ement, at distinction level or above;<br />

(c) have such other qualifications or experience which, in<br />

the opinion <strong>of</strong> the selection committee, are <strong>of</strong> a<br />

satisfactory standard and are suitable preparation for<br />

entry to the program.<br />

In selecting students for the course, the selection committee<br />

takes into consideration the balance <strong>of</strong> skills required for<br />

team participation and hence attendance at an interview<br />

may be required.<br />

Admission with advanced standing<br />

Students who have completed <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s Graduate<br />

Diploma in Entrepreneurship and lnnovation or the Graduate<br />

Diploma in Management will be given full credit for one year<br />

<strong>of</strong> the program.<br />

Duration <strong>of</strong> the course<br />

The course is designed to be completed after three years <strong>of</strong><br />

part-time study. Continuing students from the Graduate<br />

Diploma in Entrepreneurship and Innovation or the Graduate<br />

Diploma in Management will complete the program with an<br />

additional two years <strong>of</strong> part-time study.<br />

Course structure<br />

Essentially the course will take a problem-based approach,<br />

the learning being 'end' rather than 'means' driven. The<br />

range <strong>of</strong> subjects included has been chosen to satisfy the<br />

educational needs <strong>of</strong> those who will manage for growth.<br />

Australian case studies form a major part <strong>of</strong> the teaching and<br />

learning techniques as will preparation <strong>of</strong> business plans.<br />

All subjects are conducted on an inter-disciplinary, team<br />

teaching basis with heavy input from industry personnel and<br />

a number <strong>of</strong> units in the later years are block taught.<br />

The final year provides skills in the important areas <strong>of</strong><br />

corporate entrepreneurship, a challenging course which<br />

stresses the integration <strong>of</strong> skills in pr<strong>of</strong>essionally solving<br />

recurring problems in high growth business mangement<br />

and the production <strong>of</strong> a short research thesis in an<br />

apsect <strong>of</strong> the Australian entrepreneurship environment.
