6.3 where a student undertakes the masters degree<br />

program (or any portion there<strong>of</strong>), by part-time<br />

study, the maximum time shall normally be not<br />

more than seventy-two months.<br />

After taking advice from the supervisor(s) and the Head <strong>of</strong><br />

School, the Divisional Board may grant a period <strong>of</strong><br />

intermission <strong>of</strong> candidature on such conditions as the<br />

Divisional Board sees fit.<br />

7. Supervision<br />

For each candidate the Divisional Board shall appoint, on<br />

the recommendation <strong>of</strong> the Head <strong>of</strong> School, and on such<br />

terms and conditions as the Divisional Board determines,<br />

one or two supervisors, one <strong>of</strong> whom shall be a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> the academic staff <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

If the program is carried out within the <strong>University</strong>, at least<br />

one supervisor shall be a member <strong>of</strong> the academic staff <strong>of</strong><br />

the School in which the program is conducted.<br />

Where two supervisors are appointed one shall be<br />

designated the Coordinating Supervisor. The Coordinating<br />

Supervisor must be a member <strong>of</strong> the staff <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>University</strong>. The Coordinating Supervisor shall have overall<br />

responsibility for the administrative conduct <strong>of</strong> programs.<br />

If for any reason a supervisor is unable effectively to<br />

supervise the candidate for a period exceeding three<br />

months, the Divisional Board shall, on the recommendation<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Head <strong>of</strong> School, appoint a replacement supervisor.<br />

8. Progress<br />

At the expiry <strong>of</strong> twelve months from the date <strong>of</strong> admission<br />

to candidature and at such other times as the Divisional<br />

Board may decide, the Divisional Board requires a report<br />

on the progress <strong>of</strong> each candidate. The report is prepared<br />

by the supervisor (or, where there is more than one<br />

supervisor, the Coordinating Supervisor). Prior to the<br />

preparation <strong>of</strong> the report the supervisor (or Coordinating<br />

Supervisor) will be required to interview the candidate.<br />

The candidate will be given access to the report and will<br />

have the opportunity to comment to the Divisional Board<br />

on the supervisors assessment <strong>of</strong> progress.<br />

Where the Divisional Board is <strong>of</strong> opinion that a candidates<br />

progress is not, prima facie, <strong>of</strong> a satisfactory level, a<br />

candidate may be required to show cause why<br />

candidature should not be terminated.<br />

Failure on the part <strong>of</strong> the candidate to demonstrate<br />

satisfactory progress may result in the Divisional Board<br />

terminating candidature.<br />

9. Thesis<br />

9.1 Three copies <strong>of</strong> the thesis shall be submitted to the<br />

Academic Registrar. At least two <strong>of</strong> the copies<br />

must be bound.<br />

9.2 The thesis must be typed one and a half spaced, in<br />

English on A4 size paper, and conform to any<br />

other specifications prescribed by the Divisional<br />

Board.<br />

9.3 One copy <strong>of</strong> the thesis shall, if passed by the<br />

Divisional Board, be lodged in the <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

Libraly, one shall be held by the School in which<br />

the work was done, and one shall be returned to<br />

the candidate.<br />

9.4 With the Divisional Board's prior approval a<br />

candidate may submit work other than in the<br />

form set out in 9.2 and 9.3.<br />

10. Examination<br />

The Divisional Board shall appoint on the recommendation<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Head <strong>of</strong> School and the Coordinatina Su~ervisor, on<br />

such terms and conditions as the ~ivisional-~oard<br />

determines, at least two examiners in respect <strong>of</strong> each<br />

candidate's thesis. The candidate's su~ervisor shall not<br />

normally be appointed as an examine; At least one<br />

examiner shall be external to the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

The name <strong>of</strong> the examiners shall not, without the approval<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Divisional Board, be disclosed to the candidate.<br />

Each examiner shall provide a report to the Divisional<br />

Board on the standard <strong>of</strong> the candidate's thesis and<br />

recommend one <strong>of</strong> the following courses <strong>of</strong> action:<br />

(a) that the thesis be passed;<br />

(b) that the thesis be passed subject to the inclusion<br />

<strong>of</strong> minor specified amendments;<br />

(c) that the thesis be returned to the candidate for<br />

major revision and re-submission within a specified<br />

period; or<br />

(d) that the thesis be failed.<br />

Each examiner should indicate whether the report is to be<br />

made available to the candidate in whole or in part.<br />

11. Patents and registered designs<br />

The patent rights or right to register a design for any<br />

device, process, chemical or the like which has been<br />

invented or developed by a candidate for the degree <strong>of</strong><br />

Master by research in the course <strong>of</strong> the program being<br />

undertaken for the degree shall, unless otherwise<br />

determined by Council on the advice <strong>of</strong> the Divisional<br />

Board, be the property <strong>of</strong> <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Technology</strong>.<br />

12. Confidentiality<br />

It is the Divisional Board's view that in general the public<br />

should have access to the material contained in a Masters<br />

thesis once the degree has been awarded. However, the<br />

Divisional Board recognises that where a program <strong>of</strong><br />

research is carried out in or in conjunction with the type <strong>of</strong><br />

organisation referred to in 5.2 above, the candidate, in<br />

order to pursue such a program, may be given access by<br />

that organisation to restricted information which the<br />

candidate or the organisation does not wish to disclose<br />

freely. In such cases the Divisional Board must receive, in<br />

writing, from the organisation, notice <strong>of</strong> such materials<br />

and the reason why, in its opinion, disclosure would be<br />

undesirable.<br />

Where such material is involved the Divisional Board's prior<br />

approval is obtained, the candidate may submit a thesis in<br />

two volumes, one containing the general thesis, the<br />

second containing only the restricted data or information.<br />

The Divisional Board may restrict access to the second<br />

volume for a specified period.
