12.7 The Chief Examiner may not override a final<br />

decision regarding the refusal or granting <strong>of</strong> a<br />

special examination unless done in consultation<br />

with the Head <strong>of</strong> School and the Subject<br />

Convener.<br />

12.8 When a special examination has been granted the<br />

result must be finalised in readiness for notification<br />

to the awarding Divisional Board by a date fixed by<br />

the Divisional Board, but will normally be no later<br />

than two months after the date <strong>of</strong> publication <strong>of</strong><br />

the original result.<br />

12.9 Any extension <strong>of</strong> that period must have the prior<br />

approval <strong>of</strong> the Pro Vice-Chancellor <strong>of</strong> the<br />

awarding Division who shall fix an alternative date<br />

by which the special examination must be<br />

finalised. Details <strong>of</strong> the extension granted shall be<br />

notified to the next meeting <strong>of</strong> the Divisional<br />

Board.<br />

12.10 The Subject Convener must submit the result <strong>of</strong><br />

the special examination to the Head <strong>of</strong> School in<br />

time for it to be approved by the Pro Vice-<br />

Chancellor <strong>of</strong> the awarding division before the due<br />

date. The results shall be approved by the<br />

Divisional Board and the Divisional <strong>of</strong>fice shall<br />

process the results and forward the candidates list<br />

to Student Administration for publication.<br />

13. Retention <strong>of</strong> assessed work<br />

The Head <strong>of</strong> School shall arrange for the retention <strong>of</strong> all final<br />

examination scripts and any other assessed material which is<br />

not normally returned to students for a period <strong>of</strong> not less than<br />

six calendar months after the publication <strong>of</strong> results. After this<br />

period, material may be destroyed in accordance with Public<br />

Records Office procedures.<br />

14. Confidentiality<br />

All results, and decisions associated with dealings relating to<br />

examination/assessment irregularities, and any appeals arising,<br />

are confidential. Where such alleged breaches or irregularities<br />

are dismissed, all documentation shall be destroyed.<br />

15. Verification <strong>of</strong> documents<br />

The uttering <strong>of</strong> forged or false documents or statements in<br />

support <strong>of</strong> any claim under the assessment procedures shall be<br />

deemed to be a breach <strong>of</strong> the regulations.<br />

16. Procedures for review and appeal<br />

16.1 Any student or group <strong>of</strong> students has the right to<br />

seek a review <strong>of</strong> any aspect <strong>of</strong> the assessment<br />

procedure.<br />

16.2 In the case <strong>of</strong> assessment and exclusion detailed<br />

procedures are set out in sections 17 and 18<br />

respectively.<br />

16.3 Issues falling outside those areas should be dealt<br />

with in accordance with section 19. Such issues<br />

might include an occurrence or matter in which<br />

the student believes helshe has been treated<br />

unfairly or has been disadvantaged academically.<br />

17. Assessment review<br />

17.1 Students who are dissatisfied with any aspect <strong>of</strong><br />

their assessment should first contact the relevant<br />

member <strong>of</strong> the teaching staff to discuss the<br />

matter informally.<br />

17.2 If no resolution follows, the student should submit<br />

in writing to the Head <strong>of</strong> School, a brief outline <strong>of</strong><br />

the circumstances.<br />

17.3 The Head <strong>of</strong> School shall advise the member <strong>of</strong><br />

staff involved in the assessment, and shall<br />

nominate another staff member to re-assess and<br />

report on the student's work.<br />

17.4 In the case where the staff member is also the<br />

Head <strong>of</strong> School, the Pro Vice-Chancellor may<br />

nominate another member <strong>of</strong> staff <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>University</strong> or a member <strong>of</strong> staff from the same<br />

discipline in another institution to undertake a reassessment,<br />

and report on the student's work.<br />

17.5 A written report on the re-assessment is to be<br />

given to the student.<br />

17.6 If the student is not satisfied with the resolution<br />

proposed under section 17.5, notice to that effect<br />

must be sent by the student to the Academic<br />

Registrar within ten working days <strong>of</strong> the date <strong>of</strong><br />

the advice received under section 17.5. A meeting<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Assessment Appeals Committee will be<br />

convened.<br />

17.7 Assessment Appeals Committee<br />

All appeals will be presented to the Assessment<br />

Appeals Committee.<br />

17.7.1 The Committee will comprise:<br />

a) The Vice-Chancellor's nominee from<br />

within the Chancellery who will act as<br />

Chair;<br />

b) A representative <strong>of</strong> the Student Union<br />

nominated by the President <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Union; and<br />

c) A member <strong>of</strong> the academic staff <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Higher Education Divisions <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>University</strong> chosen by the Chair <strong>of</strong><br />

Academic Board. The person so chosen<br />

shall not be from the Division<br />

concerned.<br />

The Academic Registrar (or nominee)<br />

will attend and act as Secretary.<br />

17.7.2 The written report, compiled by the Head<br />

<strong>of</strong> School under section 17.5 will be<br />

forwarded by the Head <strong>of</strong> School to the<br />

Chair <strong>of</strong> the Committee.<br />

17.7.3 The student or a representative <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Division may submit any other written<br />

material to the Committee in support <strong>of</strong><br />

their case. Any additional evidence so<br />

provided shall be copied to the other party<br />

or parties in the appeal.<br />

17.7.4 Students invited to attend a meeting <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Committee may be represented by an<br />

advocate who may not be a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Appeals Committee.<br />

17.7.5 The student and a representative <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Division separately must be given the<br />

opportunity to appear during the course <strong>of</strong><br />

the hearing.<br />
