Subject aims and description<br />

The aim <strong>of</strong> this subject is to give students a general<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> the business environment with an emphasis<br />

on management in the visual communication industry.<br />

Specific course objectives are:<br />

To develop an understanding <strong>of</strong> graphic design<br />

management including setting up and managing a<br />

design <strong>of</strong>fice, working with clients and graphic design<br />

project management.<br />

To develop skills in presentation and articulation <strong>of</strong> ideas.<br />

To gain experience in solving design management<br />

problems.<br />

To develop skills in written business communication and<br />

report writing.<br />

Aspects <strong>of</strong> the theory are incorporated in assigned project<br />

work <strong>of</strong> the cooperative degree stream and the pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

practice <strong>of</strong> the Graphic Design Centre (degree conversion).<br />

Students are required to submit two major written assignments<br />

based on information presented in the tutorials by the course<br />

coordinator and guest lecturers.<br />

2. To introduce a range <strong>of</strong> design methodologies used to produce<br />

creative solutions in design projects.<br />

Subject description<br />

An introduction to design methodology including product<br />

research, analysis and identification <strong>of</strong> the problem, methods<br />

for dealing with creative problem solving and removing mental<br />

blocks, clear thinking, divergent and convergent thought<br />

processes. Areas <strong>of</strong> interest will include lateral thinking, form<br />

follows function, functionalism, association, brainstorming<br />

techniques and other methodologies. Practical exercises and<br />

discussions will consolidate these processes.<br />

Topics to be covered in this subject will include time<br />

management, typography, photography and reprographics as<br />

they pertain to industral designers.<br />

Subject aims<br />

To introduce students to perspective and 'box construction'<br />

drawing as a basis for two dimensional communication<br />

techniques such as product sketching and more formal<br />

visualisation.<br />

The introduction to one, two and three point perspective as it<br />

pertains to industrial design and the construction <strong>of</strong><br />

sophisticated forms from basic constructed geometric units.<br />

Testing and inspection techniques used to determine the<br />
