Subject aims and description<br />

The subject addresses management applications <strong>of</strong>, and the<br />

management <strong>of</strong>, computing. It will include financial packages<br />

for budgeting and management accounting; administrative<br />

applications; database management and applications; <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

automation: spreadsheets, word and document processing,<br />

desktop publishing, graphics and presentation packages.<br />

Electronic <strong>of</strong>fice: networks, electronic mail, facsimile, telex,<br />

etc.<br />

Decision support packages - mathematical tools relevant to<br />

management and some packages relevant to the<br />

manufacturing process will be considered.<br />

5 The subject seeks to extend the student's knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />

engineering oriented applications packages, their<br />

: management, and their management applications. It also<br />

aims to extend the student's programming skills.<br />

structures and applications, project engineering and<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

The sales function: relationships with advertising, sales,<br />

promotion, product planning, market research and<br />

distribution, feedback from market.<br />

The selling process: prospecting, presentations, handling<br />

objections, closing, follow up. Buyer behaviour and<br />

motivation.<br />

Sales management functions, management practices.<br />

Leadership and motivation <strong>of</strong> the sales force. Salaries and<br />

financial rewards. Organising the sales force. Time and<br />

territory management. Sales control and evaluating sales<br />

performance.<br />

An elective subject in the Graduate Diploma in Management.<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

This subject reviews integrated manufacturing systems and<br />

the manufacturina manaqement function: production,<br />

production andiontrol, maintenance, quality<br />

control, etc.<br />

The relationship between manufacturing and other<br />

organisational functions in the company and the application<br />

<strong>of</strong> analytical techniques relevant to production and related<br />

functions such as market forecasting, scheduling, materials<br />

requirement planning will be covered.<br />

The 5 P's <strong>of</strong> Japanese manufacturing technique, VAM, world<br />

class manufacturing, JIT production system and theory 2.<br />

warehousing and storage systems, transportation.<br />

Financial, human and organisational management aspects<br />

are covered.<br />

An elective subject in the Graduate Diploma in Management.<br />

Subiect aims and description<br />

An examination <strong>of</strong> an organisation's communications needs<br />

and development <strong>of</strong> cost-effective strategies to meet those<br />

needs.<br />

This includes a communications audit, and choice <strong>of</strong> an<br />

appropriate mix <strong>of</strong> communications media to minirnise the<br />

cost <strong>of</strong> communications within the organisation and<br />

externally.<br />

Both private and public networks will be considered.<br />

Energy Management<br />

An elective subject in the Graduate Diploma in Management.<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

An assessment <strong>of</strong> an organisation's energy requirements and<br />

development <strong>of</strong> systems and operational techniques to meet<br />

those requirements at minimum cost.<br />

Energy source selection and life cycle costing, system<br />

optimisation.<br />

The study includes techniques for monitoring energy usage in<br />

buildings and larger sites and for developing optimal use<br />

strategies.
