An introductory study <strong>of</strong> industrial development and the<br />

growth <strong>of</strong> managerial functions leading to an understanding<br />

business world <strong>of</strong> today. The importance <strong>of</strong> innovation and<br />

Management.<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

Management is a key element in all areas <strong>of</strong> engineering.<br />

This subject is directed at the elements <strong>of</strong> managment as<br />

they particularly relate to project, site and plant<br />

management. As with other subjects within the course, the<br />

key elements <strong>of</strong> management - financial, human and<br />

organisational and legal -will be integrated.<br />

An introductory subject addressing core areas <strong>of</strong> engineering<br />

management with focus on project, life cycle and plant<br />

management. Considerations include: project initiation,<br />

implementation and termination, financial and legal<br />

requirements, life cycle costing, plant procurement,<br />

operation, reliability maintenance, update and disposal.<br />

Elements <strong>of</strong> particular significance to projects will include<br />

initiation <strong>of</strong> projects, feasibility studies, tendering procedures,<br />

estimating, CPM, cost control, construction documentation,<br />

building and planning permits, claims, partial and final<br />

certification.<br />

Plant management aspects will include plant procurement,<br />

operation, reliability, maintenance, updating and disposal <strong>of</strong><br />

equipment.<br />

Planning law, Acts and legislation relevant to major projects<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

An introductory subject addressing the elements <strong>of</strong> industrial<br />

engineering, production and manufacturing management.<br />

Techniques addressing various issues including: financial<br />

analysis, inventory management, quality, scheduling and<br />

quality management are considered and computer s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

used in related case studies. Modern approaches to<br />

management such as MRPII, JIT, TQM and techniques for<br />

method study, productivity improvement, plant layout and<br />

network anaysis, etc, are discussed. Heavy class participation<br />

Business strategy component will cover setting objectives,<br />

strategic planning and measurement <strong>of</strong> performance.<br />

Innovation and entrepreneurship are emphasised.<br />

Human aspects will consider financial analysis and reporting.<br />

Legal aspects will concentrate on contract, tort and trade<br />

practices legislation.<br />

Manufacturing aspects will deal with quality and inventory<br />

management.
