Subject aims and description<br />
All students take this subject in first semester <strong>of</strong> first year. In<br />
addition to an introduction to the basic features <strong>of</strong> Japanese<br />
grammar, reading, speaking and writing covered in the<br />
language component a series <strong>of</strong> seminars on Japanese<br />
culture and history are included in the coursework. The<br />
language component is assessed by regular tests and<br />
assignments and all students must present a seminar paper or<br />
write a research essay for assessment <strong>of</strong> the culture and<br />

Subject aims and description<br />
This subject is taken in the second semester <strong>of</strong> the first year.<br />
All students will continue their studv <strong>of</strong> basic Jaoanese<br />
grammar, reading, speaking and wdting. The lahguage<br />
component is assessed by regular tests and assignments. The<br />
non-language component consists <strong>of</strong> seminars on<br />
contemporary Japanese society.
