Subject aims and description<br />

This subject is designed to introduce students to the Japanese<br />

language, and training is provided in language patterns and<br />

grammar, writing, conversation, listening and<br />

comprehension. Films, slides and a variety <strong>of</strong> taped materials<br />

are used extensively throughout the course. As a further aid,<br />

taped cassettes <strong>of</strong> each lesson can be purchased. It is highly<br />

recommended that students enrolled in this subject also enrol<br />

for AJ102, <strong>of</strong>fered in both semesters.<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

This subject consolidates students knowledge <strong>of</strong> basic<br />

grammar and extends the range <strong>of</strong> grammar patterns,<br />

Japanese characters and vocabulary acquired at VCE level. It<br />

also provides training in aural/oral skills appropriate to post-<br />

VCE competence level.<br />

This subject continues training in written and spoken<br />

Japanese. It introduces students to unabridged fiction reading<br />

texts. It extends the range <strong>of</strong> Japanese characters and begins<br />

training in honorifics appropriate to a range <strong>of</strong> adult<br />

Subject aims and description<br />

This subject introduces topics relevant to language and<br />

effective communication. It aims at acquainting students with<br />

the differences between English and Japanese<br />

communication patterns. References in English are used.<br />

Students are encouraged to establish contact with Japanese<br />

people and to use data collected from interviews with them<br />

in the writing <strong>of</strong> essays and research assignments. The<br />

contact scheme is an imoortant comoonent <strong>of</strong> this subiect as<br />

it provides the student iith the opportunity to converse in<br />

Japanese and to become familiar with Japanese attitudes and<br />

customs.<br />
