Within this framework the subject examines the role <strong>of</strong><br />
government and the means that are used to achieve its<br />
economic objectives. The conflict between objectives and the<br />
consequences for the Australian population are stressed. The<br />
focus for study is on issues derived from these elements and<br />
their importance within the context <strong>of</strong> macroeconomics.<br />
Unit 2 <strong>of</strong> the subject develops and applies an understanding<br />
<strong>of</strong> micr~ec~n~mic as well as macroeconomic concepts to a<br />
particular organisation or market within the economy. The<br />
case study approach will be based on an application <strong>of</strong><br />
research skills to economic and social processes.<br />

Subject aims and description<br />
Familiarises students with the broad impact <strong>of</strong> information<br />
technology in the workplace. Instructs and assists students to<br />
use personal computers and to understand the basic<br />
applicants <strong>of</strong> a range <strong>of</strong> computer s<strong>of</strong>tware. In the first<br />
semester, students will be introduced to operating systems<br />
and word processing and will develop basic competence in<br />
file management and word processing. In the second<br />
semester, word processing skills will be further developed and<br />
other kinds <strong>of</strong> applications (e.g., spreadsheets) will be<br />
introduced.<br />

Explores the social impact <strong>of</strong> Australia's ethnically diverse<br />
population and explores the effects <strong>of</strong> cultural and linguistic<br />
differences on individuals' life chances. The subject will also<br />
cover the practical issues <strong>of</strong> dealing with members <strong>of</strong> the<br />
public andlor the workplace who may come from different<br />
cultural backgrounds.<br />

Subject aims and description<br />
Students choosing to study a language other than English as<br />
an elective must undertake two semesters <strong>of</strong> study. The<br />
course <strong>of</strong> study assumes no prior knowledge <strong>of</strong> the language<br />
chosen. Both written and spoken language skills will be<br />
developed. The cultural dimensions <strong>of</strong> the language and its<br />
social context will be studied, especially in relation to its<br />
relevance in the workplace.<br />

Investigates the key concept <strong>of</strong> change in society with<br />

Examines the roles and functions <strong>of</strong> the major forms <strong>of</strong> mass<br />
media in Australian society. Particular emphasis is given to<br />
such factors as ownership and control <strong>of</strong> the media,<br />
mechanisms for media regulation and debates about the<br />
influence <strong>of</strong> mass media on individuals and social patterns.<br />

Examines the theories <strong>of</strong> organisational behaviour. Considers<br />
the ways in which groups and individuals interact with each<br />
other and the impact <strong>of</strong> organisational structures on the<br />
functioning <strong>of</strong> organisations. Particular emphasis is given to<br />
the analysis <strong>of</strong> organisational culture and how such<br />
phenomena affect behaviour in the workplace.<br />

Subject aims and description<br />
Examines theories <strong>of</strong> culture and the notions <strong>of</strong> cultural<br />
transmission, continuity and discontinuity and change in<br />
society. Includes case studies <strong>of</strong> cultural contexts, meaning<br />
systems, representations in film and text and the social<br />
sources and impact <strong>of</strong> cultural symbolism. The role <strong>of</strong> ideas<br />
and systems <strong>of</strong> meaning in Australian society is highlighted.
