Management<br />

Disaster Management<br />
The courses were launched in Melbourne on October 1996<br />
by the United Nation's Director for the International<br />
Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction - Dr Olavi Elo.<br />
The development <strong>of</strong> the courses have been supported by<br />
Emergency Management Australia (EMA), the peak<br />
commonwealth organisation in emergency management in<br />
Australia, whilst module development has been undertaken<br />
by The Australian Emergency Management Institute, the<br />
Training and Education Directorate <strong>of</strong> EMA, at Mt.<br />
Macedon in Victoria. with the assistance <strong>of</strong>:<br />

internationally through The Asian Disaster Preparedness<br />
Centre, Asian Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>.<br />
What does this course <strong>of</strong>fer?<br />
The Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma in<br />
Disaster Management will provide participants with a<br />
regional, national and international perspective <strong>of</strong> disaster<br />
management within the context <strong>of</strong> their own needs and<br />
priorities, economic development, environmental<br />
preservation, vulnerability and mitigation planning, based<br />
around the Australian/New Zealand Standard on Risk<br />
Management (AS/NZS 4360:1995)<br />
The Risk Management Standard is generic and independent<br />
<strong>of</strong> any specific industry or economic sector. These courses<br />
will provide a structured pathway through the risk<br />
management framework, supported by a range <strong>of</strong> electives<br />
<strong>of</strong>fering diverse subjects across disaster/emergency<br />
management disciplines<br />
Internationally, the courses are delivered in partnership<br />
with the Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre, The Asian<br />
Institute <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong>, Bangkok, Thailand. The Asian<br />
Disaster Preparedness Centre is a major disaster<br />
management training centre for the Asia-Pacific region<br />
<strong>of</strong>fering a range <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional development programs in<br />
disaster management.<br />
Career potential<br />
The Graduate Diploma in Disaster Management will<br />
provide participants with the opportunity to acquire<br />
advanced skills and knowledge in a demanding and<br />
competitive market place, where diverse expertise is<br />
required to compete successfully. As the impact <strong>of</strong> the AS/<br />
NZS 4360 Risk Management Standard, is felt throughout a<br />
range <strong>of</strong> organisations, those possessing skills in its<br />
interpretation and application will be widely sought<br />
through local, national and international markets, in<br />
Government and non-government organisations,<br />
emergency services, private and public sectors, volunteer,<br />
aid agencies, and other related disciplines.<br />
Course delivery<br />
Delivery <strong>of</strong> these courses are via distance learning format.<br />
At The Asian Disaster Preparedness Centre, Bangkok,<br />
Thailand, elements <strong>of</strong> the course will be delivered in<br />
conjunction with the existing residential Disaster Manager<br />
Course<br />
Course duration<br />
Both courses are self paced. However a maximum<br />
permissible time <strong>of</strong> six months will be allowed for the<br />
completion <strong>of</strong> a single module. In certain circumstances<br />
extensions will be negotiable with the participants<br />
facilitator.<br />
Estimated deemed total hours for the:<br />
Graduate Certificate - 650 hours<br />
Graduate Diploma - 1300 hours<br />
Articulation<br />
The Graduate Certificate in Disaster Management<br />
articulates with the Graduate Diploma in Disaster<br />
Management, with complete credit. Therefore participants<br />
successful in gaining the Graduate Certificate, gain<br />
automatic entry into the Graduate Diploma program.<br />
Entw requirements<br />
In order to gain admission onto the course, applicants<br />
should have a recognised undergraduate or postgraduate<br />
qualification.<br />
