<strong>of</strong> entry level training within an articulated program<br />

structure which will provide participants with the skills<br />

and knowledge to enter employment and to gain access to<br />

9 further education and training. Within this context, the<br />

course aims to provide participants with the opportunity<br />

skills and knowledge to use a computer for a variety <strong>of</strong><br />

=. purposes;<br />

a knowledge <strong>of</strong> how computers are used for simple<br />

4' communication purposes and the ability to establish<br />

D effective, simple communication networks;<br />

: knowledge <strong>of</strong> how computers are used to control<br />

industrial processes and the ability to use and test some<br />

control svste~ns;<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> how computers are used for information<br />

systems and the ability to store and retrieve<br />

information using such systems;<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> and use <strong>of</strong> various application s<strong>of</strong>tware<br />

packages;<br />

knowledge <strong>of</strong> and ability to use value added<br />

information services.<br />

Course duration<br />

The course consists <strong>of</strong> nineteen modules. Each module<br />

requires twenty hours <strong>of</strong> class attendance. The course will<br />

be <strong>of</strong>fered full-time only at Hawthorn campus. The<br />

minimum completion time for full-time study is one year.<br />

Entry requirements<br />

Students are eligible to enter this course <strong>of</strong> study if they<br />

have satisfactorily completed an approved course at Year<br />

11 level or an approved equivalent. The course is not<br />

designed for school leavers. Applicants should have at least<br />

one year <strong>of</strong> appropriate industrial experience before<br />

undertaking the course. However, applicants who do not<br />

have the required industrial experience could still be<br />

eligible . . if they have current employment in an appropriate<br />

2200~~0 Foundation Year<br />

The Foundation Year is an academic program which<br />

is designed to meet the needs <strong>of</strong> overseas students<br />

who require a one-year bridging program before entering<br />

studies for degrees in business, computer science, applied<br />

science, engineering or arts. Satisfactory completion <strong>of</strong><br />

the Foundation Year guarantees entry into a <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

degree course. Three streams are <strong>of</strong>fered in the Foundation<br />

Year - an Arts stream, a Business stream and a Science<br />

and Engineering stream.<br />

The business stream includes the following subjects:<br />
